Sunflower seeds are very high density nutritious foods, for both humans and wild Macaws; their 'high healthy fat' content supports a wild Macaw's energy reserves as they fly throughout the day in search for food, to feed their babies, or to seek out a safe place to sleep at night. Caged Macaws that do not fly do not require a high fat content food in large amounts, because this can eventually lead to fatty liver disease...but they do require the essential vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats present in sunflower seeds, but since a caged bird does not fly, probably 2-3 seeds a day are all that is required to maintain their beautiful feathers, their energy level, and to encourage their fantastic sense of humor!
