      Hi Kevin, there's probably a lot of reasons why people do these types of exercises. I don’t usually partake in the contesting circus, but I do enjoy any excuse to get out and up into the high-country, especially to setup and work a portable radio station. Winter Field Day is one of those times for me. Thanks for dropping by. Take care.

    Great vid. Building my first hf portable rig and doing something similar. What really got me to subscribe though was the manual coffee grinder and aeropress. Nothing better while in the field.

    I am going to be honest with you. I didn't know much about HAM Radio and so I took to the internet to read a little more about the technology. It is a very cool hobby to have. I never knew the strength of the antennas on the communication system. Have a great day my friend.

      It’s really fun to talk to people in other countries too. Russia and stuff. Most folks speak English on the radio. The accents are crazy though. I’ll be setting up a station this weekend up at camp. First time loading the quad on top of my jumping jack trailer too. I’ll ave to post some pics on IG. Thanks for stopping by.

      @@N0KTZ I can imagine it can be addictive to talk with folks around the world. Thankfully they speak English. I look forward to pics and video bud. I've always wanted a jumping jacks trailer. How do you like it? Oh, by the way, I found out why your video was not uploading. UA-cam was having an issue and many users reported it not working.

    Thanks for the fun video. The only pieces of gear we have in common are PP connectors and the same blue coffee cup. I usually set up from a 16' RV camper trailer that I converted to EMCOMM use, with an IC-7200, 55Ah deep cycle battery and a Buddipole vertical antenna. If I feel ambitious, I'll hang an 80-meter dipole from a fiberglass mast and feed it with 600 Ohm ladder line via a Palstar manual tuner and 4:1 balun. POA is great fun! 73, de K7SFA.

    • @N0KTZ
      @N0KTZ  2 роки тому

      Thanks Mark, that 16’ travel trailer sounds really cool. Nice setup. I recently acquired a Yeasu 891 to lighten the loadout. I also have to say that I have no regrets moving from my bluetop optimas to the iron phosphates. I’m saving about a gazillion pounds in battery. Buddypole is a great product. I always keep my ears peeled for Bud especially if he’s bicycle mobile. Always working a gigantic pileup. Thanks for stopping by. Take care. 73

    Nice winter FD setup. Hey, did I miss something here? How can you check the 'SWR' with zero power? (min marker 3:34). Naturally it would be flat because there is no projected power to reflect...right? Normally 5-10 watts should be used for antenna SWR checks and tuning. I like the Wolf River Coil. I was looking to buy an 'Alex Loop' or a 'Chameleon F Loop' and decided the Wolf River Coil was a stronger performer, just as easy to carry and a whole hell of a lot cheaper. You disappeared on me but now you are back with a new channel...cool! I have missed your videos Rusty and SO glad to see you back. Now subbed and catching up on what I missed. 73 my friend!

    Just curious, does the power output of the radio decreases when your battery voltage starts to drop a little after some time?

    • @N0KTZ
      @N0KTZ  Рік тому +1

      Lithium batteries maintain a fairly high charge until they drop sharply off at the end. I keep track of my output power and the Ah to manage each battery before it drains all the way to the drop off point. Hope that helps. Thanks for stopping by. Take care.

      Thanks for stopping by. That vertical antenna is great. Best alternative to a horizontal dipole that I found so far. The battery is pricey but it saves on weight. Could probably get by with a smaller one but 20Ah can work a couple days for me at full power. I also have an FT891 now that I hope will pair nicely with the TIA1000. It’ll pack into my ATV better for a more compact station. But for driving my truck in, that 7300 is king.
      Take care. Stay well. 73.

    Sir I just subscribed but I have a question? The question is… if I wanna do pota and deployments and home base station should I go with the IC 7300 for HF or should I go with the FT 991A

    • @N0KTZ
      @N0KTZ  3 роки тому +1

      You’ll have to make the right decision based on what you want out of the radio and all the research you do. I can tell you my preference is to keep hf and uhf/vhf on separate rigs. Case in point… I gave up my 857 and bought a 891. My philosophy is to have gear that’s excellent at its specific purpose and not something that’s trying to be almost excellent in everything. I run the 7300 next to a 2980 in my shack. Don’t care too much about uhf but I have HTs that’ll cover 70cm. Hope that helps. Let me know what you finally do. Take care. 73.
