Playing this now as opposed to last summer when it was released, I'm a little uncomfortable with the prescience of: "The direct line to the hospital just says 'leave a message.'" I didn't really get the line back in June. Now I get it.

I work a 5am freight shift... it sucks. But I'm allowed to listen to music so it's all good.
This song came on and I had to put down my box of tractor parts just to see who was singing...then I had to start it over to catch the lyrics.
Then i came back hours later when i was finally home so i could see the video.....which was interrupted by someone telling me my two horses had escaped.
I gotta say it was not the worst day I've had but it was pretty shitty.... however the positive vibes were more helpful than i expected... as i was wading through shoulder deep weeds trying to catch two wild ponies the chorus was going on a loop in my head..... high stepping indeed.
So after all that, i FINALLY GOT TO SEE THE REST OF THE VIDEO.

One of the best songs released in recent years. Great tune. Awesome lyrics, great message. Love it all. I heard this on XM as I was driving my family from Illinois to Arizona in '19. I handed my phone to my lovely wife and asked here to take a pic of the screen. This is one of those PERFECT songs that gets into your soul the first time you hear it.
I have been following the Avett Brothers for about 10 years now, and what I find is that their music has grown in line with their own growth and experiences. Music is a form of expression and if a keyboard riff is not your thing, that's ok. There are chances that there are 5+ songs on the album that are vintage(ish) Avett. When Ain't No Man came out, everyone roasted them, called them sellouts and asked for Rubin's head. Then No Hard Feelings comes out and everyone says that it's quite possibly Seth's best song (his opus, as commented several times). Sometimes it's fun to sit back and play their albums in order and see how they've evolved over the years.

I cannot express how amazing it is to hear something new from them because.. Being a fan for so many years, I've learned that there's quite a bit of time between each release... But for more than good reason. These men don't just mass produce what they feel is in demand by their audience at that moment in time. They create ONLY what they genuinely feel is the most impactful, perfected, and necessary lyrical art that should be heard in the world they live in right in that moment. So that being said, I have so much respect, love, and admiration for these two!!! Don't stop doing what you're doing!!

Many won’t share my sentiment but Rick Rubin has given these guys the confidence to evolve and stay true to their style. The most original band going right now and there isn’t a close second.
I gotta tell ya, as for "most original" and "no close second" - that's not remotely true. Example: check out Lake Street Dive. They go hard. Unlike anything else out there.
Totally agree. Rick has really helped them evolve. Kind of weird they are closely associated with one of the highest profile producers in the world but he's popular for a reason. I think you hit the nail on the head.

@@bobcrone6151 If you don't like it, why take the time to watch the video and leave a negative comment? Every band has a lane they tend to stay in, or a formula that they kind of abide by. Their sound is a little different now, and while I like their early folk sounding records probably a little bit more. I still am willing to give credit where credit is due. They are great lyricist and good song writers in my opinion.

It is, as I heard it at the debut in Richmond, and it was AWESOME. Took me several listens to get used to this when it was released a few days later.

I know it's gonna be a good day with new Avett music. The video seems to me to be a parody of the pop country that radio is force fed. Seth's monologue thankfully saves this from the clutches of west Nashville.
I knew after watching this video that it would ruffle a few feathers. Lots of people are hating on this, I just don't understand why you would want your favorite artists to stay inside the lines and never try anything new. The Avett Brothers can do no wrong in my eyes. When you have a group of insanely talented artists who can actually write meaningful lyrics, you get genuinely "good" music. Doesn't matter what kind of genre box you try to put them in they will always make great music.

Interesting. After my first listen, I thought .. no. Second listen ... not bad. Third listen .. I'm kinda hooked. Catchy tune, great lyrics. Definitely different for TAB, but I don't mind different, as long as it's good different. And I think this is good different. And fun. I think when you combine this with Trouble Letting Go and Neapolitan Sky, this should be a really nice album. (hopefully those are all on there).
