GEORGINA PALMER: Maramataka
AWE Emerging Composer Georgina Palmer introduces her Festival commission, a trio for horn, violin and cello named ‘Maramataka’, in this SOUNZ Film from Queenstown’s Te Atamira.
The piece is inspired by the sense of wonderment evoked by a viewing of the July 2023 “supermoon” and by the childhood experience of the night’s sky in Māpua, near Nelson. An edgier middle section draws on Whiro-te-tipua’s battles with Tāne, a contrast of darkness and light.
‘Maramataka’ is performed in this SOUNZ Film by Festival Artist Benjamin Goldscheider (horn), and AWE Emerging Artists Lorna Zhang (violin) and Damon Herlihy-O'Brien (cello).
