    Hope you had a good time in America, we have our silage in thankfully. Just wondering how much land you own and how many cows because you seem like a decent size farm?

    • @gerry6420
      @gerry6420  5 років тому +4

      J McConnell yea we own 70 acres and rent quite a bit, farm 380 acres in total . 60 suckler cows. Run about 250 cattle over summer and 380 over last winter. Beefing 200. Have about 80 acres in tillage. 60 acres of hay. That’s about the run of it.

    Would you ever consider swapping to baling the silage instead of the pit?
    We have gave it ago this year to see how much of a difference it will make

  • @Jackoleary64

    You won't be short on silage this year

    • @gerry6420
      @gerry6420  5 років тому

      tek bros hopefully. We were bit short last year so not taking any chances

  • @JamesOBrien2253
    @JamesOBrien2253 5 років тому +1

    We'll be doing 12 acres of 3rd cut end of next week add an extra 75 80 bales to the heap

    • @Jack--mu3gs
      @Jack--mu3gs 5 років тому

      James O Brien our 3rd cut is 40 acres just cause we cut early start of May and that was 320 acres had one field burn out and add on the 100 acres of maize

    • @gerry6420
      @gerry6420  5 років тому

      James O Brien it’ll all be wanted this year. We’ve good few bales to make too. All the hay ground is there ready. Gonna pit some of it too. Hopeful we get a dry spell to get it all finished up

    On the mowers... l thought twas 2 linkage mowers ye had Gerry? Did ye borrow that deere w grouper? Does the dew bother ya, suppose b half the day waiting for it to lift this time of year?

    • @gerry6420
      @gerry6420  5 років тому

      Bambinohead1 no the dew wasn’t a issue. It went in in very nice order for the time of year. Got a loan of the trailer mower for group the rows. Plan is to sell the older of the taarup mounted mowers and buy a trailer with a grouper. On the look out for one 2/3 years old that’s not done much. There hard to come by. Most are contractor mowers

    Have you ever looked at a silage wagon as a replacement for the jf down the line?

    • @gerry6420
      @gerry6420  5 років тому

      Tommy's hand yes could be an option but feels maybe a little far from the yard for it to be viable. Never looked into it

    • @Masseyman-nv2kl
      @Masseyman-nv2kl 5 років тому

      gerry6420 I've been told cows do better on wagon grass for some reason and if you get like a pottenger toro or a jumbo your 6930 should be able to power it and pottenger has one of the best reps for not shearing pins and bolts. Great vid

    • @b210wah3
      @b210wah3 5 років тому

      Masseyman6480 I feel like they’d be quicker than the jf too

    Make the first time round 30ft by grouping the 2nd time and back swath on to it.

    • @gerry6420
      @gerry6420  5 років тому

      David E I’ve done that before.... jf 900 struggles 🙁

    • @b210wah3
      @b210wah3 5 років тому

      David E you’d only do that for a self propelled or in light stuff. With a trailer harvester or baler you’d pull your hair out trying to lift a big 30ft

    • @oscarjohansson79
      @oscarjohansson79 5 років тому

      Here in sweden most farmers use butterflies with swath belts. The balers seems to be able to handle it well

    The jf should be able for 20ft rows we have a jf and she has no problem with the 20ft

    • @mrhorsepower150
      @mrhorsepower150 5 років тому

      Patrick Mcmanus jf900 not really made to lift heavy 20 foot rows.A1050or1060 no problem or the big 1260 will lift 30 foot if ya had 300 plus horses to drive it

    • @pjagrivideomcmanus3661
      @pjagrivideomcmanus3661 5 років тому

      mrhorsepower150 mine growls but if u give her plenty of the deisl there is no problem

    • @gerry6420
      @gerry6420  5 років тому

      I’ve lifted 20fts but it’s hard on her. Depends on crop and conditions. 16ft is nice side row. Doesn’t stuff, and you get through it nicely

    why you so late in the year doing second cut

    • @gerry6420
      @gerry6420  5 років тому +1

      drumdy we were effected very badly with the drought in June and July. 6 weeks after the 1st cut had been done, the ground still was yellow like it had been cut a few days only. A lot of second cuts aren’t even done round here yet.
