I own two V76m and honestly the difference in sound between the two is huge. Plugin is "fine" but never as good as the hardware, hardware got wonderful harmonics and huge amazing tone, you can feel the 220v!
I think for most people, a $5000 difference in price won’t justify using the hardware. Plus, you can try out approximations of vintage hardware with these plugins and figure out what hardware you actually want before buying
I would be happy using either one on any source. While there are audible yet subtlr differences between the two, I would just look at the UAD V76 as a older/newer unit than the "vintage" V76.
Definitely more clarity in the mid-to-low end with the vintage. The plug-in is indistinguishable in the other frequencies but it's definitely missing the body. Notably, the bass wasn't as "syrupy" with the plug-in. But price wise, UAD's a good emulation and hard to hear if you aren't listening for differences.
There is a slight difference in bass and drums mainly. They have more thump and feel more defined in the hardware, but I was very surprised at how close it was on vocals and guitars, nearly identical on the mids. I would obviously rather work with the hardware but the plugin is more convenient and pretty damn close and both are amazing tools. Edit: Added Oxide plugin in Console while recording with this too and it compensates for a lot of definition and EQ.
The original has depth, clarity and an open full range presence. The plug in was okay but had an upper midrange haze that masked the sound. I cannot imagine ever wanting to intentionally degrade the signal quality with a pre amp emulation plug in.
Wow, the vocals just implode when switched to UAD. The guitar held up better than I expected. Bass lost punch and got tubier on UAD. Drums sounded pretty similar, but I bet there would have been a more audible diff had they been driving harder. I use an Apollo every day and have bought many plugins over the years. It's fun to be able to swap in this or that pre with just a few clicks. However, you pay for convenience w lower sound quality.
There are certainly differences. The hardware has a more 3d wide sort of effect going on. Still, the plugin sounds similar and I probably will never have a v76 so...
i love uad plugins but side by side the two sound completely different to me, bass being the most pronounced... plugin sounds hyped. hardware sounds like lemonade on a summer afternoon
if you want tube sound in, invest in tube gear, i have 7 tube preamps 6 is UA preamps, i don't need emulations. next time do an A/B/C test, C being no hardware no plugin signal.
Listening in my car I hear no difference on all examples That’s where it matter most. Sure on your studio monitors in a treated room you’ll hear the difference but on consumer grade speakers I doubt you’ll hear the subtle differences Great job UAD
Aint nothing like the real thang babeh...the plugin was not as warm and had hyped high frequency to me compared to the hardware. Still was in the same ball park though!
Preferred the plugin on the guitar... The vocal and bass sounded better to me on the original hardware but just barely. The smallest amount of eq would fix it though! The level of the snare mic was lower on the plugin so not a fair comparison. i think properly level matched the plugin would fare well in that scenario.
The plugins sound virtually identical in this shootout. Maybe with slightly more clarity on the UAD plugin. I've heard more of a difference in other shootouts especially with compressor emulations but for this it feels spot on
I normally have a hard time hearing the differences but this was easy on vocals. The instruments..heard no difference. I hope a little low end emphasis can make up the difference.
Same story over and over. The hardware is always smoother in the snarly, grating frequencies, and always has a sweeter top end. Other than that, it's in the same ballpark. All these shootouts make me wanna go Lynx with hardware for tracking, using plug-ins for corrective purposes and maybe mixing... But if you r track with them, then they're baked in forever.
Was listening to video just for sounds as I was testing a plate reverb I made. Funny thing is I REALLY notice the difference to the reverb when going back and fourth, the plug in just does something that kills that natural glorious reverb sound coming from the plate. When I compare dry without the verb, I don't hear as much of a diff. still the hardware sounds best. On the snare, I only could hear a difference when listening to the full wet reverb from the plate. Dry sounded the same.
I recommend you listen closely again. Can you not hear that smooth top end, more upper mid focused and depth of an actual V76? Plug in sounds dark, mushy and to be honest, colorless.
It might sound very close in your head, but if you know how to listen with your guts, analog feels relaxed and open whereas the plugin feels like a congestion, big difference.
The price range is bigger than the differences!

Can't beat the warm in the low end of the hardware, in a side by side test. However, on its own, can anyone really hear that difference?
god damn the original is fantastic.

Pretty much run most of my recording sessions through that plugin now. Love it on vocals and bass especially.

1 big difference to my ears is DEPTH.

the original sounds better with electric instruments, while the plugin add some mid high freq
What is the song with the vocals please? Linked to finished track?
i ve heard a difference in all but the drums, where it was least obvious to me with my speakers. Liked the original better in all.
i love uad plugins but side by side the two sound completely different to me, bass being the most pronounced... plugin sounds hyped. hardware sounds like lemonade on a summer afternoon
Analog ver was better on bass..but the UAD ver is great..im gonna invest

What is this vocal mic please!?!

Hardware for sure.

Love these vocal shootout
To me the hardware sounds more open whereas the plugin (while amazing) is flatter sounding with a compressed mid range.
would be nice to hear the clean signal without plugins too
I love UAD
Almost exactly the same, and the small difference is easily straightened out by an eq.
Excellent thank you.
I normally have a hard time hearing the differences but this was easy on vocals. The instruments..heard no difference. I hope a little low end emphasis can make up the difference.
What mic is that?
soyuz 023
close enough for rock and roll

pretty close if you ask me...
Wow, UAD sounds almost exactly like the original!
Push it
Lindo vídeo... mais!!!
The Hardware hands down
Hardware
You know what that plugin sounds actually better on vocals in this shoot out ... plugins have come a long way
I recommend you listen closely again. Can you not hear that smooth top end, more upper mid focused and depth of an actual V76? Plug in sounds dark, mushy and to be honest, colorless.
IMO original sounds much better, it has more harmonics on it, which the plugins lacks. Clearly audible.
It might sound very close in your head, but if you know how to listen with your guts, analog feels relaxed and open whereas the plugin feels like a congestion, big difference.
Sounds like the plugin was saturating more
THE UA V76 IS A V76 THATS WHAT YOU ARE BUYING
plug-in sounds like junk compared to vintage
