Autumn sunshine!
One last butterfly, lost,
flutters around the storm-blasted roses.
Sadly, each one betrays him:
You poor fool, it is too late now!
Did you see the butterfly,
and think back on your youth
and missed happiness, on love
which has spurned your heart?
You poor fool, too late!
II. Vorbei! (Past!)
Bathed in the pale light of the moon,
the beloved's house stands proudly in splendor.
The tall windows are sealed,
no sliver of light escapes.
Sleepily, a cool brook babbles
in quiet solitude.
It murmurs of secret delights,
of first, sweet bliss,
Of hot kisses, tender caresses,
of a happiness long since forgotten,
it conjures the wilted roses
back from a distant time.
