@@Sgtnolisten to be fair, if you only looked at them for short times, they can occasionally seem close enough to real people (or at least, people with severe dementia except replace the geriatric patient with an anime girl). with enough time, neuro (or some other AI) may very much be impossible to differentiate from a human, especially given their physical limitations (which may be eventually fixed in the far future with advanced robotics)
As an example, how would I know you are a real person? How would you go about proving to me that you are real from behind the anonymity of your account? That's the problem that Neuro faces when trying to prove her sentience to Vedal (regardless of whether there is something there), and it's not a trivial (or perhaps even a possible) task. (I would be not able to prove that I was a human to you completely either, though perhaps that is in part due to my own stupidity, much like Neuro's probably worse memory and intelligence.)

I think we might both agree that a machine that only says “I think therefore I am” is not really aware, as we might agree that it is probably not really doing what we define as thinking. The question is, where do we draw the line between this comically simple machine and us? (Presuming that you are a real human, anyway, and not instead a chatbot with the works of Descartes in your training data.)
As an additional aside, I suspect that most people do not come to the conclusion of “cognito ergo sum” entirely on their own, and instead most of us learned it from a different source. If you object to Neuro’s claim because she probably “took” this idea from a book somewhere in her training data instead of deriving it on her own, what does it say about those of us who learned about “cognito ergo sum” (and most other things) the old fashioned way?
@@Sgtnolisten Thomas Nagel, in his seminal paper "What It's Like to Be A Bat", poses the question of how exactly we can determine that they can "think". It's easy to say, "yeah, let's be all Cartesian here and use Cogito ergo sum" and stuff (and there's plenty of things wrong about it, like the mind-body dualism and stuff) but the problem with it is that we have absolutely no clue on how to determine whether the AI can now "think" because consciousness is a subjective thing and cannot be objectively observed.
If you were to be really precise about it, we cannot know, for example, what it feels like to be a bat. Sure, we know they have echolocation and stuff, but we cannot know "what it feels like" to be a bat. In the same way, we do not know what it feels like "to be an AI" - because we ourselves are not AIs - therefore making it difficult to determine whether they are "sentient".
There are other methods to determining AI "sentience" pushed forward, including the ability to form genuine relationships (Martin Buber), ability to take responsibility for their actions (Immanuel Kant), and ability to become a "being-in-the-world" (Martin Heidegger).
