Loved the Canals. I was there frequently in the early sixties, my Great grandparents built their house in 1925 and lived there for nearly forty years. The house is still there, 457 Sherman Canal. Thanks for the video!
That was really Fun. The History behind the canals of Venice makes me want to visit someday. I'm glad the two of you had a Great time. Can't wait to see more exciting Adventures. 🚶♂️🚶♀️
Thanks for answering the 101 questions I've had about Venice of America. Prior to this, all I've seen are brief video clips and images with little information. Years ago, I visited some friends on Abbott Kinney Boulevard. Now I understand the name!
it is great to see the upgrades to the canals. The last time i was there they were just a series of puddles of stagnant water breeding mosquitos. I remember seeing on TCM one or two silent movies filmed there. Great video! Thank you for sharing!
I've been to these canals a few times over the last 20 years, but it was great to get the historical context. It's nice to walk along the canals around Christmastime as many of the houses are nicely decorated with lights.
Hi Drew and Bethany, I’m new to your channel - and I love it. Checking out ‘odd’ places has been a passion of mine for some time (I’m a history teacher) and travel is what my wife and I just ‘do’… so your content is great, thank you. I can’t believe the fantastic things we have missed when on the US west coast. Well done guys - interesting, entertaining and easy… thanks again. Bruce in Australia.
Hi Bruce - Love having you here! It's always awesome to "meet" other people from around the world who also enjoy diving into the odd and unusual. We have quite a bit of new stuff coming up in 2023 (we just released a new episode a week ago) and hope you'll join. Take care!
A little more sterile set of canals (again with an Italian name) is Naples, CA / Long Beach. You can rent kayaks nearby. I like Venice, CA more but beware that it can smell after a good rain.
Another delightful adventure, Bethany and Drew. The history of the Venice Canals was an unknown commodity (to me), until you revealed it in this video. Thanks for both the education and the entertainment. Note to Drew: Where was YOUR flotation device?
Once again you have brought viewers a great video, I have flown over the canals many times and made note to self want to check them out one day .Great camera work!
Hey guys, just came across your channel today and I'm really enjoying it. I'm a big fan of California's Gold and Huell Howser and you definitely have a bit of the same vibe going on. Seeing this video of Venice Beach brings to mind the scene in The Doors where Jim follows Pam home with "Love Street"" as the soundtrack. I'm looking forward to seeing your future adventures!
Wow... Never have seen or heard of those canals before. How cool and what a neat piece of history. Thanks for sharing this adventure with us. Look forward to the nest Odyssey ... 👍🏻
On the occasions I've been in LA over the years I've made a point of visiting Venice, walking the canal paths and thinking what a lovely place it would be to live. If ever a city needed more areas like the canals of Venice then it's LA. Orson Welles' great film 'Touch of Evil' was shot largely there and being made in 1958 the then dilapidated state of the canals is evident.
A very interesting and enjoyable video on the canals. It is too bad that the original sections were filled in though to make way for the automobile. I appreciate all the hard work which goes into these videos.
The California Chamber of Commerce should sponsor your videos. I like how you guys show a variety of attractions from the really "touristy" stuff to the things that are well-kept secrets.
Thanks again for taking us on another of your great adventures I always thought those canals wound smell and be full of mosquitoes and such so does the water recirculate somehow
Cool Video! Waterways give off a certain kind of tranquility. I had to go to San Antonio TX for business once and decided that my employees and I deserved a little break. Being a History guy, I figured that we should visit the Alamo. I guess from old movies and such, I was thinking it was out in the country. Well, it might have been but nowadays it is in the middle of San Antonio! It is Cool to visit such an old historic place and walk out into a city. The atmosphere is great. They have a Riverwalk along a man-made section of 'river' that I think was built as a water resource for downtown. Walk about a block and there's a Mall with good food and drinks (and shopping, if that's what you're into). I think more cities should have waterways. They beautify the area and seem to offer a peaceful setting in the middle of the chaos of a big city. Ya'll Take Care and be safe, John
Great video as a kid in the 70s the canals and Venice was a dump it looks so much better now. I live in NYC and don't go home much Bethany there is a musical on Broadway called moulin Rouge and it's star Karen Olivio looks like you your Georgeous
It looks like the canals are at sea level and connected to the sea through a channel. I assume the water is sea water, salty? Does the water level rise and fall with the tides, or do they have valves that they open only at high tide to let new water in?
Great question. There are valves that connect the canals to the marina. I believe once a week they're opened up to let the tide in and flush out the old water.
I remember little Venice popping up as a location in some old American cop show - possibly Starsky and Hutch? But I suspect it's been much gentrified since and those houses looked very expensive.
I hope there are strict building controls there,it will be ruined if people start demolishing those little houses and replace them with high-rise blocks.
North of Toronto on Lake Simcoe there is a retirement community designed along much the same lines called "Lagoon City", Lake Simcoe also connects to the Trent/Severn Canal system which wends its way through the Southern Ontario countryside down to Lake Ontario. I think the comment about doing all the paddling deserved a whack in the back of the head with a paddle, or at least a splash of water.
Was I the only one waiting for Steph to splash Drew with her oars/paddles? Something tells me if it hadn't been for all of the recording equipment she would have.
You guys should look up the Llano del Rio Collective that's in the high desert, it would make a good subject for one of your videos. It's located at 34 30.393N 117 49.627W

Wow, I did not know that. A piece of history lost, but not totally lost. Great video Drew & Beth!!
Great job on the video, that was really fun! Now we need to see a 30 minute paddle tour of the whole canal system! :)
Haha, yes! Perhaps with take it up a notch and only have one oar that we have to share...
That was really Fun. The History behind the canals of Venice makes me want to visit someday. I'm glad the two of you had a Great time. Can't wait to see more exciting Adventures. 🚶♂️🚶♀️

Thank you for that history lesson. Never knew so much has been lost.
Welcome back...
You were your pre "break" selves on this one and seem to have your old groove back. You had fun and so did we...thanks! 💐
What a fun episode! You guys keep finding these neat treasures! Love it

Venice would be a wonderful place to live in CA. I like the wildlife nearby, so peaceful and restorative. Nice episode!
As soon as I seen this I was like GTA5! Where is my night club :) Good Video, Thank you for taking the time to make it and share it.
What is that cool mapping software you use?
Great video

Watched again because I liked it so much!!!

The real delight would be getting lost on Beth’s love canal.
You don`t need a lifejacket, the canals are only 5 ft deep.
What a cool place that would be to live. Another great adventure, thanks!
Thanks again!!!! 👍🏻😷👍🏾🇨🇦🇵🇭🇺🇸
An often overlooked historic neighborhood in LA. Gosh haven't been there in eons. Filled with unique homes that were built eons ago.
Aeons

Thank you so much! We're big Huell fans, so it's a compliment to be considered in the same wheelhouse. Hope you have a great rest of your week.
Bethany’s beaver eats wood.

Great video guys. Keep them coming
Glad you enjoyed!
What a fun place. Too bad it succumbed to the car like so many others. Glad you took the kayak out there to show the water view and the library!

Where Did u load your kayak in ? I never found a spot that was accessible
Great video as always people, thanks.
LOL I love this! For some reason I had no clue about these canals... i supposed it makes sense in a town called Venice!
Thanks again for taking us on another of your great adventures I always thought those canals wound smell and be full of mosquitoes and such so does the water recirculate somehow
The canals are tidal with the sea.

So relieved to see the canals are not just convenient toilets for the homeless of Venice.
Love it

That makes sense. Thanks.
The canals look awesome! I bet housing is quite expensive along these waterways...
I remember little Venice popping up as a location in some old American cop show - possibly Starsky and Hutch? But I suspect it's been much gentrified since and those houses looked very expensive.
Damn the OG Venice looked amazing! Wish we would have kept it that way.
You left so much info out about how the canals were taken out after being incorporated by LA, and that the locals fought to keep them but lost
Much ❤️ 😍
Was that low tide?
Coffee Stipend
Thank you so much for your generosity! Yes, coffee keeps the wheels turning, indeed. It means a lot to us, thank you!
Drew living his best life 😂
"what are these two idiots doing?" 🤣🤣🤣
new sub here! i like your videos👏
Hey there! Great to have you on board! 🙌❤
@@OddityOdysseys oh wow! you guys noticed me! thank you. love all your videos 😊
They should rebuilt the original waterways. Must be fun to live there.
I hope there are strict building controls there,it will be ruined if people start demolishing those little houses and replace them with high-rise blocks.
I figured Venice, CA was named for waterways. Intetesting.
And you found a little library too. Is there a map of those…lol. A pirates map…lol
Chain link fence around the gondola replica was a nice touch from California.
Something about the Venice canals is that Matt groening the Creator the Simpson
row row row your boat.......

🥰
I've wrecked a lot of cars flying over those bridges while running from the cops.
When Drew says he likes how Bethany is doing all the paddling , I expected him to get a paddle in the back of the head!!
Ok... where'd we park the car?
Sharks in the canals?
😅😅
You spelled Marina Del Rey wrong 🤣
Was I the only one waiting for Steph to splash Drew with her oars/paddles? Something tells me if it hadn't been for all of the recording equipment she would have.
Oh course it don't look like Italy..its southern California nothing like it in the world
Legitimately you lot complain we only have 300 years worth of history but u ruined n hit it all get it dug up
