In case anybody's interested, I just bought these base carrier bars, and they are super easy to install and un-install by myself. I prefer the clean lines of my car without the rack, so I'm very pleased that I can put them on when I need them and take them off again when I'm done. I put a towel over one of the clamps when moving it to the other side of the car to protect the roof, and that worked well.
Thank you. You’re the only one who mentions the wind reduction tabs that go on the bottom of the rack and the rubber gasket for storage. My dealer installed the rubber gaskets and did not install the wind reducers. They don’t even know what they’re doing at VW.
Where are the wind reduction tabs applied exactly? On the front or back? On top or bottom? Parallel or perpendicular to the bars? I'm still confused. TIA.
The plastic plugs that need to be removed in front are threaded. They unscrew with a 2.5 mm hex tool. I think it is easier to unscrew them than to pry them out. Plus they can be reused. Thanks for the rack.
These are nice racks but 2 points of caution. The weatherstripping on your door sills will start to tear over time after opening/closing the door because of the metal base on the roof. The metal base on the roof may (will) scratch the paint on your car.
I used these for 3 years across two different cars, taking them on and off almost every single weekend. The weather stripping on my cars never had any damage at all. If you're getting damage, you're doing something wrong.
I have the OEM Roof Rack, but haven't installed it yet. My question is the part that hooks up to the inside part of the door frame seems to be completely metal. Will this not corrode over time with having metal on metal?
I just received mine today. The bottom parts that hook onto the inside of the roof frame have a rubberized coating on them. Any part of the rack that clamps down on the car and touches the paint is rubber or has a rubberized coating. Shouldn't have any issues with corrosion.
I'm reading that the max load of the OEM rails is 110 pounds. Is that correct? With most cargo boxes being 40-50 pounds, that only allows for 50-60 pounds of cargo. Would Thule or Yakima rails be better since they have a higher max limit?
Hi, do you have the part number for that little black screw that you take out of the underside aperature panel? I lost one of mine, and would like to get a replacement.
I got an OEM set from VW for a 2018 golf R. The rack does not have the little nubs (male end) that would go in the little holes in the roof door ram. Have you seen this before?
I know I'm late to the party here, but this is the best vid for this on the net. Any chance you might be able to show how the 'louvers' are installed. You mention it during the video but never show the method. Thanks for the great videos, keep up the great work. I hope you are enjoying the net GTI!
There are cars that have a special "port" on the roof for installing rails, but vw golf does not, and need this type of rails that are attached were the door-rubber closes. My concern is, if you use the rails a lot, is there a possibility for the door rubber to deform overtime and don't provide the same insulation inside the cabin?
i got the same roof bars on my 2002 polo and after some time of use, ı had water leaking on my front doors. These roof bars damaged my doors rubber seals....
Does this damage the paint on the car? I’ve installed my roof bars and I’m curious as to wether it will damage the paint on either the roof or under the door lip at the top
+Jodi McKinnon The OEM VW Base bars are actually made by Thule but its tough to say if they work with thule accessories. If you have attachments the use the T groove style attachments they should work but there is no way for us to be certain.
We have a 2013 5-door VW Golf. I am wondering what the maximum load capacity is of this roof rack? We have two kayaks (approx 45 lbs each); would these sustain this weight for long distance drives? Thanks.
I'm having trouble with the front roof rack. My 2004 vw gti has a liner on the top where the knub is to attach the roof rack but when I remove the liner there is no knub to take out theres just two hex-screws instead idk i bought my car used maybe something was welded onto the car?
Basically the golf was not designed to have roof bars fitted and any foot pack will damage the rubber seal. I've just bought Thule roof bars with all the fittings for a golf and it distorts the rubber badly. Thules answer is to include rubber inserts with the kit to aid the seal which is a bodge imo and with prolonged use will leave your car with leaking doors without the strip fitted. The fitting kit for the golf also doesn't follow the contours. I'm glad I got it really dirt cheap used so I can make money by selling it. Gutted really.
Not sure if you still need the answer or not, but maybe this will help someone else. 5G3-071-126 is for 2 door, and 5G4-071-126 is for the 4 door. I have a 4 door, and the instructions I received show the installation for both vehicle types, with the main difference being that the rear rack mounts differently. I would assume that the rear rack mount for the 2 door is different than the 4 door.
Is this pretty easy and fast to put on and take off? This video makes it look that way. I don't really want a rack on my car all the time. Is it really necessary to have someone to help?
stance autos In regards to price what are you comparing the price to? We are not aware of any quality aerodynamic racks that are outside this price range. This should not be any different on cars with sunroofs.
The mk7 roof rack fits the mk5? This would be great to know since I have both. I have the roof bars for the mk7. I assumed they didn't fit since the part number changed from mk5/6 to mk7
@@Belal-Khan well, I could only get the front bars on because I lost the key to unlock the rear. ill update shortly. but the little pin goes right in on each side perfectly.

Clear and simple. Thank you 👍
what’re the “profiled covers” for? I’ve never used them a single time with my racks.
will this fit the 3 door?????
Does it have pin to match with 2 holes in the rear mount position? Thanks!
Can GTI owners w the panoramic moonroof still operate their moonroof w the OEM racks installed?
Any idea if these are the same as the MK6 carrier bars? In other words, will my MK6 bars fit an MK7 if I buy one?
Would you recommend putting vinyl down to prevent scratching? Or is it fine naked like this with a clay, wash, and seal?

What is the max speed with the OEM Roof Rack and Box?! Do you guys.. or maybe someone else here know that?
are those grommets in the front only used on the factory roof racks, or on thules and yakimas as well?

I have not received the special wrench with the bars. Do you know the torque value of the tightening bolts? Thanks
+Elias M I'm sorry we don't. Did you purchase them from us?
No I got it from our local dealer, will sort it out with them. Thanks
Torque is 4 Nm (2.9 ft lb). This, along with item weight and max capacity, is listed on one of the bars.

Would these work on models that have sunroofs? or is there no difference in installation?
There would be no difference on a car with a sunroof.
