- With the concert project "Subject To Change" (2015) Joshua Redman is a guest of the WDR Big Band for the first time and presents himself as an accomplished instrumentalist and composer. The track "Yesterdays" ( K: Jerome Kern; A: Daniel Jamieson) features Karolina Strassmayer on alto saxophone and Joshua Redman on tenor saxophone. The WDR BIG BAND is led by principal conductor Richard DeRosa. Recorded at WDR Funkhaus (January 2015).
At just twenty years old, Joshua Redman released his first CD in 1993. At that time he was still assigned to the circle of "Young Lions". He has played with countless jazz greats such as Chick Corea and Brad Mehldau, without losing focus of his own projects, and is now one of the tone-setting jazz musicians of his generation.

Love the sax conversation!
First, Canada gave the world Gil Evans, then, Rob McConnell, and now, this brilliant, young arranger; makes me doubly proud to be a musician in the Great White North.
The great Joshua together with the grand master powerful WDR Big Band!
deux extraordinaires solistes, plus un big band très performant, et bien c'est évidemment magnifique!bravo à ces musiciens et musiciennes hors pairs qui renouvellent et font perdurer le jazz!
The woman who performed those alto sax solos kicks several asses (mine included)
No need to speak about Joshua Redman, his only name is enough to define jazz awesomeness
That ass-kickin' lady is Austrian-born Karolina Strassmayer.
Thanks for providing us that info
She laid down a beautiful solo there!!!

What a sound from every player. Lovin' it.
Always hate when I miss a great chart and performance the first time around but, then again, there's always the bonus of discovering more WDR that is new to me. 😎
😉 ajbfwb!
This is a smoking hot arrangment of Yesterdays. And Karolina hit it out of the park with her solo. Loved that bit of cutting at the end. Bravo!

Hi Dimitri! Thank you! Do you play an instrument yourself?
@@WDRBIGBAND You welcome. Indeed, I am a musician playing the alto saxophone under the name of D.M. Visotzky. I am more into improvised music but I really enjoy the quality of your orchestra and its musicians.
Thank you for your answer, Dimitri!

Where i can find the chord changes from the alto solo? they are so sick!
Karolina surprised me with that solo, the lady can certainly blow the horn soulfully
Hey Keith, if you like to have more information about Karolina, then have a look at her portrait: ua-cam.com/video/IKEGUnlCe_Q/v-deo.html
Yes, Karolina is the real deal...world class player.

Sick !
The frequent use of perfect fourths in that line is what makes it "sick". Perfect fourths have a tendency to resolve in western music and as a result if they are played consecutively- as Strassmayer does- this generates a level of harmonic ambiguity as the perfect fourths do not resolve. This unusual approach to harmonic exploration is often referred to as the "modern sound" in jazz, something which John Coltrane- who is a very strong influence on Strassmayer- and McCoy Tyner pioneered. Hear how Strassmayer and Redman (8:23-8:33) build dialogue from this approach by extrapolating strong perfect fourth lines to non-tonal dimensions.
Lohvissimo - dialogue and troupe
👍🙏
The rhythmic groove has me thinking of altoists Steve Coleman and Greg Osby, two of the first visionaries to have incorporated this exciting and danceable rhythm in their Organic Real Jazz presentation.
I adore how Joshua and Karolina were able to speak the Organic Real Jazz language without being inhibited or restrained by the nature of the assigned rhythmic context - a virtuosic feat reserved for only a few "Jazzicians" among whom were Stanley Turrentine, David Newnan, Sonny Rollins (Calypso rhythm) and Grover Washington, Jr., as well as are Nelson Rangell and Eric Marienthal.
Lohvissimo to the arranger/conductor and the Band.
Hey Joshua, you're bad but Karolina is the Jonathan Livingston Seagull of saxophone artists.
Now *there's* an obscure reference
is that the neumann tlm 103 mic?
+Phil Ipp
Hey Phil Ipp, the microphone is a tlm 170
