I knew Ellen was a FANTASTIC actress and an incredible singer, but wow!!! I had no idea she could sing like this, she's blown my mind once again. Such a talent!
As has been said by others, she is probably the only singer who can sing this song without making you think of Lenya. Her Tango Ballad and Solomon Song are also amazing.
@mzmiller52 Rolling Stone shook their heads at Ellen, yet she still got the Tony nomination and made the soundtrack totally kick ass. Hahahahaha! I guess that they missed the fact that she was successfully playing a character significantly older than herself at the time and that to even get nominated for a Tony (especially that early in one's career) means that you're pretty damn good.
rolling stone gave the cast album an A-, blaming ellen greene for her histrionics. screw them. she was the reason we went to see that incredible production in 1976. she was wonderful with raul julia. can't wait for the release of her new cd with recordings from the 70's when she was knocking new york out with her talent. come back miss greene. broadway needs talent, not technicians or celebs. HURRY
This is the first version I ever heard, when I was 11 years old. My music teacher had it on cassette with Mack The Knife and played the former to us in class once. I borrowed the tape and copied it and listened to it for 4-5 years until it wore out. I never knew who sang it or when it was recorded, of course. 30 years later, I finally found out by hearing it on here. I love the Sharon Small version from the Donmar Warehouse production (which I saw live) but this one is quite special to me. I thoroughly dislike the Blitstein adaptation (it’s not a translation, to be fair), even though I like his other work. Thus I dislike the Lenya version for both that reason and because to me it’s really Polly’s song, and I wish it stayed that way (or at least start with Polly and fade to Jenny singing it then go back to Polly, keeping it in the right place in the story, at least!).
Tony Awards help you get acting roles in TV/Film, but they don't give you much fame or fortune do they? I mean as well known and loved by those in the arts, she wouldn't be known by mainstream until her Film debut in Little Shop of Horrors. This is why theater may require a lot of talent, but never makes money. Film may or may not require much talent, but it pays an exorbitant amount. All because advertising. Money, it's a gas.

The only one of her songs from the TPO I dislike is her version of the 2nd Finale.

Whose translation is this?
It's from the 1976 Broadway cast recording. Ralph Manheim and John Willett were the translators.
