Perhaps it's that a generation of Americans were traumatized as children, doing "duck and cover" type preparations for an expected nuclear war? One of the contributors explains clearly that post-Vietnam PTSD was a catalyst for him.
You don't need squad drill for that type of force. Small partisan type forces don't need drill. History teaches that such units are most effective as individuals acting on their own initiative, so why drill them? The Austrians in the Austrian War of Succession didn't use drill on their irregular Croats and Pandurs. The French militias and Indians didn't use drill in the Seven Years War and WW2 Partisans didn't need drill. It suggests centralised control which is not necessary and actually dulls the individual nature of such troops. Ah well, I suppose the leader just wants to the the biggest patriarch, know all on the block.... the show boat. lol.
