Thanks for sharing your epic adventure. Doing the Machame route late January with Altezza. I’m not an active person, but I’ve been working out at the gym. Any tips or advice overall? I’m going solo. Flying into Kilimanjaro two days earlier to overcome jet lag. Mostly, I’m nervous about the high altitude. Got all my Diamox and meds in order. All my gears ready to go. I’m excited and nervous too.

Hi, thanks for your comments on my trip - I watched a couple of yours and was very impressed. Definitely want to do the Camino walk!
I'm glad you're going with Altezza - I found them to be a super company that always puts safety and comfort first.
I was also concerned about altitude because I live on the coast so its a big difference. However, like you, I arrived a couple of days earlier which helped acclimatise to some altitude as the hotel is about 5,000 feet.
Everyone in my group got to the top without problem. A couple felt head aches or a bit of nausea but nothing that would affect their climb.
Most days were fine and not too exhausting. The summit night though was very hard so don't worry about asking to stop to get your breath - I did every half hour!
I was completely exhausted by the time we got to the top so one of the guides gave me a can of red coke which worked wonders!
The climb back down to base camp is just as difficult - you definitely need your poles to stop you slipping on the soft soil (clinker).
I took diamox every day and Altezza advised me to take half a tablet each day before the climb. I brought anti-malaria tablets with me but Altezza said they didn't recommend them because they can react with diamox. I also did not see one mosquito all the time I was there. Some people went on a safari trip after the climb and took malaria tablets for that trip.
I hope you have a super trip and look forward to seeing your video of the climb. Good luck!

@@TimKelly-ROThank you so much for your insightful info, especially about the malaria meds. You look great and fit while on the trail. I was impressed and amazed how you’re doing it without major struggle. I guess “pole pole” is the way to go. Yes, definitely look into the Camino de Santiago. I did 3 Caminos and still itching to get back on again. You should continue making video of all your adventure. Your video is very good. I watched the entirety of it. Thanks for posting it Sir. Take care.

Excellent video. Would you recommend Altezza travel for the climb? I'm thinking about going next February.

Hi, yes I would certainly recommend Altezza for the climb. They are an excellent company and their porters and guides are superb. Altezza also own the hotel in the video.
February is a good time to travel because it is the dry season - we only had 10 mins of light rain in our 7 day climb.
I would also recommend going a day early if you can to help acclimatise to the altitude - the hotel is at 4,900 feet.
My biggest recommendation would be to pay a bit extra for the private toilets - well worth the money!
      Good luck!

Thanks Tim im leaning towards booking them for the trip. I take your point about arriving early. I was thinking that way. Yes I will definitely get a toilet! Looking forward to making the trip happen.
Thanks . Did you add a safari? I may do as its a once in a lifetime opportunity.

@@nicholasmcnally8215 Arriving a day early also meant that I could start taking half tablets of Diamox before most of the other climbers. I didn't suffer from any altitude sickness although a couple in the group were sick and others had a touch of diarrhoea. The Altezza guides monitored everyone very closely and we were all succesful.
I didn't add a safari but most of the others did - or went to Zanzibar to relax. I plan to do a safari next year but would need malaria tablets for that because it is a much lower altitude. You don't need malaria tabs for Kilimanjaro because mosquitoes don't fly that high!

Hi, the video is from a GoPro 11 camera. The photos are from different members of the team using their phone cameras - mainly Apple

May I ask how old you are? I'm 50, and my sister is 60... I want to climb Kili but my sister thinks we're too old. What are your thoughts?

    • @TimKelly-RO
      @TimKelly-RO  4 місяці тому +1

Hi, I was 65 when I climbed Kilimanjaro in February. As long as you are reasonably fit then you are definitely not too old. The guides keep a close eye on everyone's health and have twice daily health checks (blood oxygen and heart rate) so you feel well looked after. Go for it!
