I still found this incredibly fdunny when the game summons you and says "Help us fight the Yorkists" I'm literallyu from Yorkshire, hell I was IN York last month "Help, us betray your kin" "No" "YOU BETRAYED US TO JOIN THE YORKISTS?"
I can see a spiritual successor for this game as a gothic uncanny yet mesmerizing card game with a board game layout and a fantasy adventure theme. It would take more than just game design and presentation to make it an enjoyable well functioning balanced game.
Out of all the old YGO games, this has always been my fave, I still play it to this day and it was only recently during the pandemic did I actually manage to get every card you can obtain legitimately ^^
Another core memory childhood classic ps2 game. I also thought of this game as “Yugioh Chess” and didn’t understand it. It was nice to see a fellow blind Kida follower because of his Blue Eyes Armor. Great soundtrack but not as good as Forbidden memories. I need to try and beat this game now that I’m older.
Heard someone was doing a remake of this game. Honestly I used to love this just for the fact it remixed the game a bit and kept things exciting. Good timessss.
From what I heard the guy has gone on for a bit of a hiatus. It's a single guy trying to recreate the game except you can add your own scenarios and text as well. I forget the guys name but he's somewhere on UA-cam
the gameplay here is really taken from the way Magic and Wizards was played in the manga version of Duelist Kingdom. Especially with the different fields within the field.
What I like is that Manawyddan fab Llyr is actually the brother of the guy from forbidden memories and he confirms that the events of ancient egypt of the dude being summoned as final boss actually did happen in the lore of this story. Not like it really adds anything, it's just sorta neat. What kinda sucks tho is that the localization appearently removed a lot of lines of flavor text from the deck masters.
Very late to this video, but god damn it’s good! Duelist of the Roses has always been one of my favorites since I was literally like 4 and I love seeing people talk about it and their experiences. Janky as it may be, I think this game is incredibly satisfying once you get the goofy mechanics down and the replay value is unmatched. Sick video, keep it up, hell yeah!
I finally played this this year, and I understand the hype. The game is so much fun and so interesting. Spent quite a few days invested in Duelists of the Roses. I'd love more games that do some out there things with the franchise. These retrospectives are great and binging them is very nice.
I'm playing this game on my phone rn.. Just found out 3 Harpies Pet Dragons make Dark magician in the slots.. Between that, mirror wall, invisible wire, and monster reborn, mai is the best to grind early game.. OG Pumpking strat works every time
Duelists of the Roses is an incredible alternative to the card game, and has a fair bit more depth than Forbidden Memories. I've even seen a DotR tournament on YT. I love how the final boss in each path plays a very different but equally powerful deck, showing the range of strategies that work in the game...Which is what makes the early game difficulty and grind all the more disappointing. Sometimes it feels like the game is mocking your enjoyment. My advice, play until you hit a brick wall, then look up passwords for cards to boost your deck just enough to keep going. By the time you're about halfway through the game, you shouldn't need to "cheat" anymore and just focus on refining your strategies or grind a bit. However, no god can help you grind out a deck master's skills, at least not until you've beaten the entire game and get to customize your own game board. It's probably better to just pretend like your deck master doesn't have special abilities and move on.
There actually is a way to grind your deck leader's rank to get more skills in this game using the custom duel. However, it's quite tedious, works faster if you are trying to rank up a monster that can be fusion summoned (unless it's something like Meteor Black Dragon or Twin Headed Thunder Dragon, which cannot be obtained to out in your deck legitimately), and requires a specific set up to minimize what your opponent can do. This method also takes a LOOOONG time to perform, needing 5+ hours if you want to get to the max rank (secretary of defense), and consider that it's currently the fastest known method that has been discovered in the base version of the game. Anyone interested can find a video tutorial of this on Clovis's channel, which is based around Duelists of the Roses content
@@matthewkuscienko4616 Yeah and to unlock custom mode you need to beat the game twice already. So unless you have a bunch of friends who have all done the same thing like Clovis with their own copies of DotR, maxing out your deck master is kind of meaningless since you've already beaten the whole game.
@wolfgod6443 That's not actually true, I don't know where you're getting this information about needing to beat the game twice to custom duel but from what I've seen you don't need to do anything of the sort; Clovis made some videos about being overpowered at the start using custom duels to help get more cards. Also recall that rather you can duel your own deck or not depends on what you have inserted into the second memory card slot on your Playstation 2, but again, I have seen nothing to suggest that what you said about needing to beat the game even once to unlock custom dueling being true
@@matthewkuscienko4616 You cannot edit the map in Custom Duel until you've beaten both routes specifically. Grinding deck masters as quickly as possible only really works when you can edit the map to suit your needs.
Rigorous Reaver would have been fun to play with in 2006 with darkworlds which didn't have too much support. You had Graceful charity, Card destruction and morphing jar. Plus if you creature swap reaver it becomes your "opponents effect" most likely which causes silva and gold to get their secondary effects which can be pretty devastating.
I wish they expanded more on world building and story. Like explaining how being a duelist who could summon monsters became so powerful there that trained armies paled in comparison to the power of the monsters you summoned, the spells you cast, and the traps you set. I’m thinking somewhere close to what a bunch of psychic duelists fighting each other outside of duels could be like or how Academia uses monsters in their invasions to overwhelm people in Arc V. You know what I mean? Except by magical summoning means and less technology is needed, giving duelists the feel of being very powerful wizards everyone respected and feared, especially the legendary Rose Duelist who is the most powerful duelist of all according to legend.
This game was amazing. The music was awesome, and it's one of very few strategy FE-type games I can stomach playing. I dislike the genre quite a bit, but the Yugioh twist on it made me really love this game. Thanks for this retrospective!
This game was my nemesis back in the day. No matter how hard I tried I could never beat Mako. I had no idea what I was doing, but it was still a pretty cool game.
Zombie deck for the win, 2 pumpkin king and 2 fusions creating 2 more pumpkin king creating 4 ultimate monsters. Then call of the haunting and turning pretty much everyone into super zombies
I remember playing this game on ps2 way back when. I didn't speak much english at the time, but I could understand basic things. I always the Kaiba for no other reason that he's my favorite character and I didn't realize he's supposed to be the bad guy. Never managed to finish it, between the difficulty and my lack of english at the time.
I LOVE this game, but it was always unfortunate how tough it was to get the really really good cards and how much grind it was to level up your leader and stuff like that. Would love a remake of this game.
When I first played this game I finished it by barricading myself in with strong monsters and then waiting the turns out. Having the strong monsters reduce the life points below mine as I build my defences.
My first time playing I found out that Pumpking the king of ghosts stacked so i'd run 3 of them and surround myself with them in defense and when they all got to around 4-5k attack i'd start to move them forward towards the cpu.
I'm still a Yu-Gi-Oh fan I haven't never play this game 🎮 before I just got back in to Yu-Gi-Oh duel links I been a Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan from the beginning snice 2001 it's apart of my childhood memories for me.
I love this game. And concerning the Lancastrian ending I think I'm the only one who actually sees it as the good ending because I think the Rose Duelist willingly refuses to take any sort of credit for ending the War of the Roses because history says Henry Tudor is the one credited for ending the civil war so Yugi has to take all of the credit in order to avoid taking the risk of altering history with possibly negative consequences, and concerning getting sent home my suspicion is the Rose Duelist now with the full access to his/her dual Spatialkinetic/Chronokinetic powers creates a portal with the intent of going home but after going through it it's unclear if the Rose Duelist created the right portal or created a portal to another point in history.
It is absolutely criminal that Konami never rereleased this game on any other console after the PS2 never mind just making another game like it. I've been waiting since forever but it doesn't happen...
All you needed to do with that beast deck is farm beautiful beast tamers from tristan. The second you start using mass buffs it's gg, and the ai is super easy to beat tbh. Peagsus literally cheats but even then with a good deck its gg.
A couple things this review missed. 1. Fusions are similar to Forbidden Memories whereby you literally combine cards. My current build is just traditional twin headed dragon fushion. 2. Difficulty is exaggersted. The AI is as dumb as a bag of bricks. They are incredibly easy to kill. They use terrain terribly, dont use spells right, and generally will just keep attacking your higher level monsters offing themselves. 3. Ritual Monsters are summoned by ritual cards using careful positioning of your ritual monsters, although these are almost never worth it. 4. There are mods that modify the game such as the Redox mod, albeit i wouldnt recommend it. The mod completely fucks the terrain (dude who made the mod has a hard on for linear combat and spammed labrinth everywhere), gimmicky shit decks for AI, and even worst starter decks than the base game. But if you want to change thins up, there r mods that do so.
I always wandered why yugi is wearing all that S&M shit in game and on the cover, even for yugioh it's way too much, lol also kaibas armor looks very immovable like a very uncomfortable cosplay😄
that is absolutely not how you get blue eyes. blue eyes is a random drop from any 3 in a row (1/22 chance) this video also seems to gloss over fusion, which is how you're meant to beat the early duels. the patrician of darkness deck is incredibly powerful if used properly.
"beast - warrior beat down seems like it would work so i'll choose that deck- ahhhhh shit it's bad" such an iconic moment for everyone who chooses their deck in the beginning of this game haha.
You kind of sound like yami bakuras english voice. I still got this game but I gotta look for my ps2. One thing I hate about the earlier yugioh games is the shitty cards they tend to start you off with
The game is great, but bad coded in a lot of aspects, like the promoting mechanic, literally is mathematical almost imposible to reach max level, since you should play like a bunch ton of duels, that you would end bored than even trying.
You know what you should have done? Talk about the intro that talks for roughly 3 hours and stilldoesnt explain ALL THE RULES!!! It was the WORST tutorial I was ever sitting through, like I started the game around 5 p.m. and I was finished until 10:30 p.m. because it was such a drag to play out the tutorial matches like the games wants you to... As much as I liked the game designwise (graphics) I couldn't stand it, also for duels to take up to an hour, aka the OPPOSITE of how YGO duels went, even in the earlier days unless you and your opponents dont know shit on how to balance your decks and even then the rewards were so.. slim and tedious. Liek I started with the machine type deck which apparently is one of the best for starters but holy fucking smokes was it exhausting! Not because of the bad cards but because of how tedious everything felt.
I think it would have been really cool if the "random pool of card" that came in the packs were card tied to the deck leaders in the game. FKT was a really good deck leader and would have loved to have the card along side it
I like that Duelists Of The Roses is connected to Forbidden Memories. But, at least KAIBA sent us home......Yugi didn't do squat.
I still found this incredibly fdunny when the game summons you and says "Help us fight the Yorkists"
I'm literallyu from Yorkshire, hell I was IN York last month

This is such a cool series! There's so much weird niche nonsense in old Yugioh video games that it's great to see someone discussing most of it.
