UA-cam is forcing everyone to use the premium pay as you go. As far as I know they will now pay you for all the ads I blocked or skipped before. So you might be getting more dosh on that front.
same here, I'm hoping creators are actually seeing a notable uptick since I am 100% sure we are not the only one's who shilled out for YT premium just because it's not worth hunting after working add block versions, dealing with the intentional slow downs ect ect @
Keep sponsorships as moral people are boycotting/blocking yt adverts and their profit making services! They said they couldnt underpay females so checked when they found out men where under paid by 30% they said ah thats ok we dont need to fix that! 😒 You should see all the bloggers on here they take their 5 staff on their "road trip" LOL
Thank you for not catering to the "average" person. We watch you because we don't want to watch what everyone else watches. My favorite videos you make are on stuff nobody else would watch. Also along those lines, I love it when your wife comes on and you explain things with her. You two are great together. The chemistry is just fun to see.
That is exactly why I stopped watching game theory many years ago, his transformation into "dadpat" (his words), basically ruined his content for me. I watched his content for videos like the companion cube and majora's mask theories, his channel became something entirely different that didn't mesh with my interests at all, it felt too watered down for me. I want that existential dread and dark humor, not dad jokes!
Yep, when you cater to the average viewer they tend to hang around for a few videos and then move on to the "latest and greatest thing". A few channels i have been a big fan of have gradually changed their content over the last few years. Nothing wrong with the average viewer either, i tend to follow a channel, here and there from time to time and lose interest after awhile, but I will always support channels that are doing their own thing, like Asylum.
@@ScienceAsylum I love your content just the way it is, I've shown it to my family and friends as the topics you cover perfectly blend with my own interests, I greatly appreciate the content through time, commitment, effort and your love for science has created, I have a lot of respect for you. Stay crazy. ✅ This isn't a para-social thing or anything, I just wanted you to know that your work is appreciated is all.
Thank you for opening up and reaching out to your community! Your content does a huge service to the science education space on UA-cam, and I sincerely hope more and more people will come to support your work financially. Wishing you all the best for 2024 and beyond 🚀
I’m a physics student and whenever I have a question in my head, you are the first channel that I check for an answer. Thank you for years worth of truly educational and entertaining content. Keep going Nick, wish you all the best. Love to you and AwkwardM from Turkey.
Okay, you Patreon convinced me! This was compelling, so nice job. I've been following this channel since about 8k subscribers and it's been so great to see it rise after several years of relative obscurity, but there's never been anyone tackling these subjects in quiiiiite this way. So I'm on board. Just keep doing what you do!
Nick, I've been subscribed for about 2 -3 years now, and have watched every science asylum video you've made. I have never been a member of any channel, nor supported on Patreon, I guess this is where it starts. Thanks for everything, the entertainment (gravity squirrel, timeline), and the AH HA moments especially!!
I noticed how the scale of production volume vs quality for this channel tips in toward quality and absense of ads in a lot of videos. I respect that. I don't make big money but have been supporting him on Patreon for 1 Euro monthly. Continuous contribution adds a lot more value than bursts of cash.
Just joined Patreon knowing you needed more support, keep up your amazing work, you helped me so very many times. I'm sorry it took me this many years to start helping you back.
I'm happy to support the channel! The content is top-notch quality, entertaining while educational, and the live streams are a great way to ask some questions I've been wondering about. I'm looking forward to the topics you are most interested in rather than having to try to appease the algorithm. That's also why I subscribe to Nebula, because there's a ton of great content on there and most of it could never work on UA-cam. I've always believed that if I want something to exist, the best way to make that happen is to help fund it's creation.
You are by far my favorite science channel on youtube. I have no education on science but ended up getting into it as a hobby and i teach myself everything i can by reading books. I love this update. It is nice to see youtubers deciding to put the fun back into their work and embrace their passion without worrying about analytics
I immediately fell in love with your channel after i found it (which was eight minutes of unforgettable visualization of atoms ago), so it was concerning to see a newly found gem post a video "I'm not leaving but". That being said, absolutely go crazy with your videos! It's your channel where you can speak about topics that you enjoy most of all! I can imagine how overwhelming keeping track of analytics must be, and if it was me, i would probably lose all thrill of making videos after a month. So don't overstrain yourself! Better to produce vids charged with enthusiasm than joyless mainstream ones. Unfortunately, I'm from a country where donating is technically impossible, but I'll try to support this channel by ravaging those like and notification buttons. Much love to you and to those viewers who donated!
It's ok. I'm just informing everyone of my plans and I'm grateful for whatever support viewers feel like providing. How much support I got would just determine how often I'd be able to post.
I remember watching your videos when I was 17. I’m 26 now with a degree in physics. I think your switch to not care about what other people think/click/view and instead do what you love = very inspiring
My physics teacher just read the journal and wrote on the blackboard the last 10 min, so i rly never was into it until i found out your channel tbh, thanks for all the video
I have a BS in Physics and am a high school STEM teacher. You, by FAR, communicate these scientific concepts better than anyone, and I use your videos a lot ib my lessons. In short, your work is appreciated. :)
Your videos are among my favorites -- literally every post is not only vastly informative, but also we entertaining as heck! I just joined your Patreon and can hardly wait for your next installment (and I *love* when your wife joins occasionally, she asks the questions I'd ask!). Stay crazy!
So glad you are staying on UA-cam. We desperately need educators like you, Nick. The world needs to be much more lucid. And I will definitely buy your book! 🎉😊
It's really interesting to hear your take on sponsorship and midrolls, because I feel the same way; I'm not saying sponsors are bad, or UA-camrs who incorporate sponsorship are bad, but in every instance where I have begun to consider accepting a sponsorship deal, even for a product I actually like and would use regardless, it makes me *feel* bad. Midrolls, for me, are more like a boundary issue; there are ads before and after, and alongside, but you want to pitch your snake-oil wagon right in the middle of my lawn? No. (I do fear that YT will make midrolls mandatory sometime fairly soon, however)
Sponsors are not generally bad. Makes perfect sense for channels that are consumer based, like tech review channels and whatever. I'm not saying anything bad about educational channels having sponsors either. I've had them for years. I've just never gotten used to it. It doesn't make sense for me specifically. (If YT makes midrolls mandatory, I'm going to be very upset.)
@@ScienceAsylum Yeah, I've seen quite a few channels that seem to cope very well with sensible and reasonable sponsor integration. it's not definitively a bad thing, just felt to me sort of like a slight loss of the independent control that I enjoy having.
As a fellow UA-camr, I feel the pain. Good for you. You gotta make the changes towards self-sustainability. There will always be a tension there between making a living and doing what you love, and there are always parts of every job that you won't like as much, but being creative sure beats working in civil service...although that's what gave Einstein the time he needed to be brilliant on the side.
Hell yeah!! I just found you trying to find out the science behind light, photons and cameras today, and got so scared as soon as I saw this as the most recent video! I'm so glad to find you, and excited to see more!!
Subscribed to Patreon! We all want you to stay in this space but you need the money to do it. I'm happy to help you and the continuity of your channel. Love your work Nick!
Thank you for going sponsor-free. You sum up exactly my feelings when you say sponsor segments pollute the viewing experience. Since after all nobody clicks a science video to hear a sales pitch for Raid Shadow Legends or Nord VPN, and above all, also I appreciate that you don't have the cringe "UA-camr persona" I see everywhere (particularly the one where they don't know the difference between being random and being funny and think adding sound effects, pitch changing words with distorted video, and memes is how comedy is made). I like that you're a science channel who knows how and when to be serious and when to actually be funny (and be properly funny). Keep up the good work.
Just subscribed to your Patreon. Your circuit energy flow and Time-Gravity videos completely transformed my understandings of the topics. The knowledge I gained from those two videos alone is absolutely worth the subscription!
Dude, as far as #2 goes, trust me - make the content YOU want to make. Do it for you and let the people who vibe with it ride along. Here's $25. I wish you the best. We didn't agree a couple times, but I like your style. 👍🏾
I find many of your video's of very high educational value. The way you are able to explain subjects often makes it very understandable for me as a layman (laywoman) interested in physics. Thank you so much for making these. I wish I could support you, and I hope my financial situation will allow it at some point. Until then I'm grateful you share your knowledge! You're not weird to me at all, I perceive an honost, kind, curious, intelligent and funny person. That impression is solely based on your UA-cam video's, I know:) But an impression still. Hug from Amsterdam to you and your wife
You have so many great videos from over the years. If you had youtube shorts that were a clip from the video and linked to the full video more people would see the great content. You can even get an editor to go through your back log to create the shorts. Thanks for the awesome channel and the great videos from over the years.
I did try the YT Shorts linking to long-form content thing. The benefit wasn't worth the invested time (or the money to pay someone else for their time).
Your style has clarified so much I was unsure about with physics - you are an educator and physics needs this style to be honest. Especially your myth busting
Dear Nick, I’m a 53 year old IT engineer with an interest in physics. I love your channel ; all your videos are excellent. I also bought your book. Thank you!
You could talk about just about anything and be entertaining while also being educational. You are one of the few youtubers I really relate to in personality and demeanor. I'm happy to start contributing directly, so no sweat.
Hi Nick - totally respect and appreciate your direction. Our whole family loves your channel - everyone in our family has a "We need better nonsenese." t-shirts (it's true, in support of your channel but also ironically for the way our family runs 😅). So you have a genuine fan and supporter here, and I really value what your bring to science communication. Curious - what is your area of "freelance" work, in case my company is in the need for some expertise?
What "bangs" depends on so much, I haven't been actively following the videos since I've had so much going on irl, I think it differs in such ways for many Will check through ur videos soon, u are awesome
Been meaning to buy the book. Thanks for the reminder. :) Now take my money and keep doing the things you love, because I acquired a taste for your style on video 1 and haven't stopped loving your wacky but extremely detailed and accurate teaching style since. I love all your videos!
Hello. To be honest I'm very happy you made this decision. I have seen more and more yter going for the crowd pleasing option over the years and quality has been suffering. You are my number one science youtuber and I have learned a lot from your videos (especially the old ones). Make the content you love. It is better to be a small flame that burns steady than a big flame that burns out in a flash.
Science communication (heck, all communication) should have a specific target audience. Trying to appeal/reach everyone just means you fail to get your message across to those who really matter to you. And lets be honest, everyone is here because of you, so just being you is a great idea. Looking foward to some awesome content in 2024. I may just buy that book, i'll never read it, but it may help convince the odd visitor to my house I'm not as stupid as I look. Eh, I'll buy a t-shirt. You should get more merch that's not just your logo. Maybe just you saying "fast fast" or other popular catchphrases we all love. "It's okay to be a little crazy" would probalby sell pretty well.
I think one of the hard parts for me on patreon is there's this appearance out here that some UA-camrs are making millions so it's hard to gauge who to support who actually needs it. You however I am very confident so I'm going to jump in
I highly respect moving ads and sponsored messages in the middle of the video. So many science educators have fallen for this trap (understandably), but it totally negates from the viewership. Keep it up! You'll get the support. People appreciate those who are genuine.
Create the videos that you find the most interesting and fun because that shines through in those videos. Be the true you because there's a lot of people who love you for that, and we're proudly a little crazy too! You make learning fun and that's a real gift to have. Best of luck in sustaining and growing your wonderful channel.
Keep doing you, Nick! The thing I've always loved the most about the Science Asylum is that it's YOUR perspective on things, and YOUR particular subjects of interest. A number of times you've touched subjects that I couldn't find answer to for years.
I love when you teach the history of physics. It got me obsessed and resulted in the career I'm in. I suggest you do that when you get the urge - it's truly phenomenal.
I love your videos and appreciate your integrity regarding your content. This has been one of the few channels that deliberately tries to demystify the peculiarities of physics, that presents information in a materialist way and breaks down metaphysical explanations. Thank you for your work and good luck!
I haven't even subscribed to this channel, but I do watch it from time to time when it comes up as a recommendation alongside other science videos. And I'll be honest, you didn't receive any advertising revenue from me as a viewer. So please accept my modest donation in appreciation for the good work you have done over the years.
Thanks for the support! I keep hearing about people who are subbed to 300ish channels and I just keep thinking "Wow, that's a lot. You can't possible watch all that." I think a sub has become similar to a "like" on other platforms. It's mislabeled now.
It's not much, but I am proud to be a new Patreon $1 level member (believe me, I'll up it when I can). I adore your work here and love your unique personality and take on things. Thanks for being one of the best science educators on UA-cam!
I block ads, but your physics can lead us all into somewhere with solid solutions for big backers, like frameworks, math models, solid code, I truly think yours and only yours (among top physics youtubers) can! Also, Haskell sort of models?.. Just all thoughts
This is the only UA-cam channel that explains physics without going into woo woo mystery land, what Nick teaches here is directly taken from an advanced physics class with real equations and solutions. Thank you so much
One of the best strengths of any internet community is the ability to host niche content. It really frustrates me how hostile platforms are becoming to the concept. They'd rather have 1 creator with a million views than 10 creators with 100k each. But dammit, I think those 10 creators will have more interesting stuff! Glad to see you're hanging on, love your videos! I'd support you more if I could!
Nick. Do whatever makes you feel good and accomplished ( I hope it is the correct word...) we'll support you as far as we can . Best wishes for your 2024! LOL ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love this channel so much! Please continue making weird physics videos, the weirder the better! I actually watched the planetary ring one and thought it was fascinating. I'll support you on Patreon. Don't go away!
Thank you for your work. I understand why you're doing this, Nick, and hope it goes well. Wish that I could support you financially, but that's not an option for me right now. Your videos are informative, educational, and entertaining, even if I can't always understand the topic every time! (I don't have any qualifications in physics, just an interest). Best wishes to you, Emily, and the clones!
Went right away and signed up. Love your videos. I’ve read science fiction since the early 60s. So I can actually follow some of the physics. I worked for years repairing gas chromatographs and other lab instruments. They always wanted me to be a supervisor or manager. They just didn’t get it when I said I don’t want to fix people I just want to fix things. Stay crazy.
I use premium UA-cam to avoid the ads and hopefully ensure channels are paid for my views. Can't afford much, so I'm glad to see you have a range of patreon pricing. I'll happily support you😊
@@ScienceAsylum I'm now a member of your patron too. I'm glad to hear you get paid more for the premium membership views too, every little helps. Keep on doing what you love and I hope your viewers can help you to do that too ☺️
@@ScienceAsylumNick, thank you for this info! I'm also on Premium, for both lack of ads and offline viewing, and wondered for a while if it's beneficial to creators or not. Do you know if you get a greater share from either Patreon or UA-cam channel membership?
@@worstuserever The split on Premium is the same as it is for ads: 55% to the creator and 45% to UA-cam. UA-cam takes 30% of channel memberships. Patreon is best out of the support options since their cut is the smallest: only 5%.
@@ScienceAsylum Excellent, that makes it very clear. Currently all my creator support is through Patreon, just added you and kicking myself for not doing it sooner. I agree with your reasoning in this video 100%, well done for choosing the morally and intellectually higher path, you deserve every support. You are a superb educator and my understanding of physics has improved immensely thanks to your work.
I wonder if you have looked into nebula, I have heard other creators talk about it and though I wish I had enough to give because even though I worked in a different field I like watching your content and so many times when I watch your videos I understand a portion but you put out so much information that goes right over my head but you have never come across as stuffy nerd, you are a nerd who always truly enjoyed what you do and thank 😢
I like that you're not worrying about analytics. Similarly, I drove Uber for about 18 months and realized I just couldn't sweat out which ride requests to take and which not to. I decided to take every ride that made any sense at all and to perform from a perspective of being in service. It saved my sanity and provided some welcome income. Best of luck to following your own hunches.
Yep, I hear you. I unfortunately commented about how when you read advertising "it made you look bad." Terrible words on my part. What I should have said was "it broke the spell of your wonderful presentation," although that was selfish on my part. I'm so sorry you are in this situation and love what you do. It's exceptional. I look forward to purchasing the eBook and struggling through it in a good way. Keep the faith. Peace and thanks again for being so knowledgeable and creative.
I hope you succeed, man. I understand you being ethical about your sponsors but if you really dig, not even that deep, you can probably find at least some dirt on just about every company. It's the way of the world, especially this platform. I would recommend just going all in. The ads don't bother me. Take the money you make, after you pay your bills, and use it to do good. That can offset any negative feelings you have toward certain sponsors.
im proud to say I am one of the people that bought your book! im kinda retarded so its going to take me a loooong time to get through it, but I can at least say Im chipping in for the channel 😂
I also particularly loved that you struggle with the commercial aspect of it, you remind me of Dario Bressanini, who is a Professor of Chemistry and educational UA-camr ( Italian language) who, while on a live, said “Please don’t donate to me because I’m already being paid by the University”. Same kind of energy, although obviously you need to be paid, but otherwise…
I've had to stop my patreon subscriptions because I'm trying to get a business off the ground and cash is *super* tight at the minute, but as soon as things take off (or I'm forced back into gainful employment) I'll 100% be signing up to yours at the best level I can. Until then I'll be sharing and commenting, trying to give the algorithms a nudge. This is a fantastic channel, many several kW of power to your elbow!
If you're not already, become a UA-cam Premium member, which is one monthly fee. That alone will greatly help creators you watch. If not able to, totally understand.
You are one of the few I turn off the ad blocker for, unfortunately going through some rl crap now I can't do much more. But I will at least say thank you for the years of educating entertaining videos, and hopefully in the future I can help out a bit more. Here's to a great '24 for you and your lovely wife.

Welcome to asylum 😉
Can’t do a regular thing but have this, great channel.
Thanks! Every little bit helps.
Subscribed to Patreon! We all want you to stay in this space but you need the money to do it. I'm happy to help you and the continuity of your channel. Love your work Nick!
Thanks! You have awesome content. Hope you are able to keep it up for years to come.
Thanks! I hope so too.
Thanks for the encouragement.
We love the work of you and your wife! Thanks from your crazy friend in Dublin! 👍
I don't think people are _supposed_ to agree all the time. It's good for us to disagree sometimes 👍
Dude no Mr Nick, I wish I could do something. I love your show so much, you're the best science show we have in South Africa.
I love your educator style! You make science a joyous journey!
Keep going please.
Will do! Thanks!
Dear Nick,
I’m a 53 year old IT engineer with an interest in physics. I love your channel ; all your videos are excellent. I also bought your book. Thank you!
Thanks for watching! (and buying the book!)
The freelancing is still in video production. Example: I recently started editing for another educational channel.
I am terrible businessman as well, so you have my full support. ❤
😆 I'm glad I'm not alone.
What "bangs" depends on so much, I haven't been actively following the videos since I've had so much going on irl, I think it differs in such ways for many
Will check through ur videos soon, u are awesome
Dziękujemy z Polski!
Your channel is a great source of information. I don't mind the ads and am grateful to the advertisers for making your channel possible.
Been meaning to buy the book. Thanks for the reminder. :) Now take my money and keep doing the things you love, because I acquired a taste for your style on video 1 and haven't stopped loving your wacky but extremely detailed and accurate teaching style since. I love all your videos!
I really like your intuitive explanations on hard topics like general relativity! They help alot!
Glad you like them! A topic like GR requires a lot of thought to convey.
I'm a masters student in astrophysics and your channel helps me a lot. Thank you so much for your awesome content. Love you from India. ❤
Glad I can help! Thanks for the support.
I admire your business decisions.. not following the algorithm. Follow your instincts.
I think one of the hard parts for me on patreon is there's this appearance out here that some UA-camrs are making millions so it's hard to gauge who to support who actually needs it. You however I am very confident so I'm going to jump in
Yeah, I understand that. You can't give to everyone, so you have to be choosy. Makes sense.
I highly respect moving ads and sponsored messages in the middle of the video. So many science educators have fallen for this trap (understandably), but it totally negates from the viewership. Keep it up! You'll get the support. People appreciate those who are genuine.
This is one of my favorite UA-cam channels! Keep the high quality content! EDUCATE US! :)
I very much support and admire your changes. You’ve just acquired a new Patreon subscriber.
¡Muchas gracias desde Europa! Y recuerda, no pasa nada por estar un poco loco!
Thanks for the support! (¡Gracias por el apoyo!)
Can totally dig it. feel the same way. All my other patreon support has stopped and transferred to Dianna (Physics Girl), except yours.
I'm glad you're supporting Dianna. I hope her life turns around soon.
Thanks for all your hard work ❤
Thanks for appreciating it 🤓
I love when you teach the history of physics.
Thanks for the support! The smaller the support, the more sustainable it'll probably be. I value the $1 pledges 👍
Thank you so much
Pbs space time also has this attribute
I completely understand. The hope is that some people can support for the benefit of everyone 👍
I'll happily support you😊
UA-cam Premium is great! Per viewer, I earn more from that than I do from an ad... by a lot.
I've been on Nebula since September 2023 👍. I am pro Nebula, but that's not where most of my audience is.
We will be here with you all the way!
Peace and thanks again for being so knowledgeable and creative.
the world needs more "terrible businessmen" 🖖
Wow, I love somebody else taking up my same moral position regards You Tube. Respect.
Thank you for everything you do Nick, we love your weirdness ❤❤❤
🤪
Thank you, those are brave decisions that will significantly enhance our enjoyment of your channel, and in anticipation you have a new Patreon
Do what you have to do Nick. Best of luck to you and Awk. 👍🏻
Your videos are amazing and I love them. I’ll see what I can do about supporting
Best of luck Nick, and keep up the good fight! I'm sorry that I missed December's Patreon stream.
Stay a little crazy my friend. I always watch your channel. You’re an excellent educator.
We need more squirrels! 🐿🐿🐿
Definitely more squirrels 👍
You are one of the few I turn off the ad blocker for, unfortunately going through some rl crap now I can't do much more. But I will at least say thank you for the years of educating entertaining videos, and hopefully in the future I can help out a bit more. Here's to a great '24 for you and your lovely wife.
Danke!
Bitte!
