I had a ring neck parrot and a yellow collared macaw. I LOVED those birds. My ringneck would talk up a storm.They were indoor birds, but they were also acclimated to be outside as I have a bug aviary out front and they loved being in there. It was Fall. But Winter they only went outside on sunny days. I live in California. I kept 2 heated lights on at all times in case the weather got chilly. I was getting ready to drive to San Francisco then fly from there to Chicago where my son went to college. He was doing an opera performance there. I wanted to clean out my car first and to be able to vacuum my car I had to unplug the cords to the heated lamps. My mind was on so much. Leaving my autistic daughter home with her father, the trip etc. I got to Chicago, called home to check on everything and my husband said that it had gotten unusually cold and a few other things. When I was driving back from the airport my husband called me to say, “ your birds are dead,” he was so cold about it. I was devastated! I had to pull my car over. I had over 3 hours to get home, but I was too devastated to drive any further. I got a hotel room. What happened was that I had forgotten to plug the lamps back in after vacuuming my car 😢 and my precious babies froze to death. Has I been home I would have noticed right away as the lights are a bright red which lights up my whole porch at night. I would have noticed that the porch was not red AND I would have brought them inside if it was really cold. The temperature outside did get cold. My husband didn’t notice anything about that porch not being red as we were separated at that time and he wasn’t used to being there at night so he didn’t know about that. I will never forgive myself for that one mistake. Just thinking about them, out in the cold like that brings me to tears every time.Hearing your ringneck reminds me of my bird as they sound just alike. That was 24 years ago. 23 years ago I got an African Grey parrot and she’s amazing. She does play out in the aviary, but I will never let a bird sleep outside like that again, now matter how warm the weather. I know many birds do, but I never want to run the risk of that happening again. Your bird is delightful. I wish you many happy years together.
