  • Experience climbing the famous Southeast ridge route on Mt Everest in 3D in only 3 minutes. A route that takes the climbers 60 days! Mt Everest is the name given to the mountain by the English. The Nepalese refer to the mountain as 'Sagarmatha' and the Tibetans use the same 'Chomolungma'.

    In 2012 a climber base jumped off the North Ridge of Mt Everest at 7220m. Some people have mistakenly thought this was jumping off the summit. Whilst at the time it was the highest base jump on earth and a magnificent effort, it was still 1630m below the summit of Mt Everest.

    I've watched this through several times now and I get goosebumps every time. The anticipation builds beautifully with the soundtrack as we make our way through the Ice Fall, Western Cwm and up the Lhotse Face. As we traverse over the Geneva Spur and onto the South Col the sense of occasion is huge. With the final push into the death zone, up the exposed summit slopes I feel the grandeur and exhilaration all the more. Most of all though, what stands out is the seriousness of the situation the climbers are in until they can get back to the temporary safety of the South Col.
    I can only imagine that despite all the noise about commercial expeditions and sherpas dragging clients to the top, only people who are extremely strong, fit, experienced, determined, acclimatized and lucky make it up and down on the first attempt.

    Hello FienStudios, A few reasons. Firstly they leave at midnight so they climb through the night and arrive on the summit hopefully around the time the sun rises. The descent is the hardest part when climbers are exhausted so they can then descend in the light when its hopefully warmer as well. They also have a limited amount of oxygen (normally about 16 hrs) so need back within this timeframe.

    It does look hard. But remember there is much less air to breath up there. Which implies that there is less air up there and therefore less air resistance. It must be like walking down hill. It's probably harder to walk down hill because there is no air to hold you up.

    Hello Rutledge, I would like to think that Mallory made it to the summit however after I climbed the same route as Mallory it was my personal opinion that he did not make the summit. Probably we will never know and this will remain one of mountaineering's greatest mystery's.

      @abhijit_birje 3 роки тому +1

      Rightly said! Although the mystery may never be solved, Mallory will remain one of the greatest mountaineers considering the primitive mountaineering gears and facilities available at that time, not to forget the lack of established routes on Everest.

Any way to give more sense of the scale, for example, the Ice Fall doesn't appear very threatening and the Hilary Step is barely discernible (especially as the line races towards the top)?

    • @hoghogwild
      @hoghogwild 8 років тому +7

      Even getting to basecamp is an adventure, at 5300 meters or 17,400ft there is only about half the effective available Oxygen for your body to use compared to sea level(20.9% at sea level vs 10.8% at 17,500ft). At the summit of Everest 29,000ft or 8839 meters there is 6.9% effective available Oxygen. Climbers must enter the "death zone" then summit, then get below the "Death zone" as quickly as possible. Everyone says that the descent is much more difficult, and that's when most people perish, on the way down. They push themselves to summit, but don't have the strength to make it down safely.

That's just playing genetic lottery at that point and the sherpas will be doing all the heavy lifting. Expereinced sherpa guides have summited over a dozen times. I'll leave that to the pros who have lived all their life at the foot of Everest.

    (BTW, reading about high altitude climbing is most fascinating. Fiction is unnecessary; the true accounts provide hours of enjoyment. The book to start would be *No Shortcuts To To The Top,* by Viesturs.)

      What mountains would you recommend to summit for training Mt Everest?
      Thanks for replying.

    • @GrantAxeRawlinson
      @GrantAxeRawlinson  10 років тому

      Stuart Grandquist Good question. Some people these days go with very little experience. It all depends what you want to get out of your climbing. If you are interested in climbing in general then its great to spend time to develop your skills and experience for a few years to get to a point where you can handle yourself on a big snowy hill. If you are purely interested in climbing Everest alone then you will probably want to short cut this process and subsequently need to use more support on the mountain. As a general indication I would recommend getting as high as possible before you go to Everest itself - the higher you can get - the better your experience will be when you finally get to the big one!

    • @DBoonful
      @DBoonful 10 років тому +2

      Stuart Grandquist It's sort of strange that someone who already has a trip to summit Everest planned is asking these questions. -but in the event you are being sincere Stuart and not kidding, I would say you need high altitude and cold weather experience (above 12k), mountain and ice climbing experience, and general expedition style alpinism experience. I don't know where you live but starting with basic skills and at lower elevation and then advance skills and endurance fitness at higher elevation. Mt Ranier is generally considered the best place in the US for this training and then typically those people take those skills to Denali and Mt Logan and other Cascade and Coastal peaks prior to 8000m destination like Everest. In Europe it's all about the Alps with Charmonix area being center for mountaineering training. Then again -you are asking about Everest which is mostly about endurance and willpower and not traditional mountaineering skill -so just getting high altitude fitness experience is most important -as the Sherpas will do almost everything else. Please post links to your journey and good luck.

      Grant Rawlinson. I've heard that google wants people to carry their camera backpack on most major trails so viewers can see what it's like to go there via computer, like their street view. I'm thinking their camera that has 5-10 lenses so you can look up, down, left, right, all the way around while the person is climbing Everest. Maybe 3D is the wrong description.

    I think this is the route most people take cause it’s the “safest”. At what point does the north route become safer because there is less bottlenecks and delays.

    cool! I was wondering if a claustrophobic could climb a minor mountain like mt Kilimanjaro? If yes, what are the possible problems the claustrophobic will face?

      +Ruby 1901. For Everest, it would be all the clothing, an O2 mask, sleeping inside of a small tent, inside a mummy bag...otherwise, you are outdoors.

    The roof of the world is clearly explained, Mt Everest takes about 60 days to climb.
    The perils of climbing this giant is clearly noted, many lost their lives there.

      +Walter Futterweit there are about 15 days of climbing and about 6 weeks of just staying at base camp.

    I use Google Earth to make these fly-throughs. The imagery and the 3D terrain models are measured by Satellite thousands of km in orbit. Thus I am limited by the resolution of the Google earth imagery and DTM. The Hillary step is not prominent enough to be shown at the Google Earth resolution at the current time - maybe in the future they will get even higher resolution, I hope so! The same goes for the icefall. The ice blocks of 20 - 30m in height wont show up at this resolution.

    This is an impressive video given how sucky Google Earth's animation system is. And this was made in 2013 no less.
