My friend. Worked with Roy in Daytona Experience when he was a tram driver 2002. He was really happy about being on the track crew. This was his first event, first day. He went behind the truck instead of in front to pick up debris from recent crash. Ray or Roy didn't have any chance to react. I had to assist in Roy's clean-up. It was horrific and not what humans are supposed to experience. I will never forget Roy Weaver! Always a smile on his face! Honestly feel bad for Ray Paprota. He got paralyzed, became the first paraplegic driver, just to be blamed for someones death when, lets be honest, it was a freak accident that nobody is solely at fault for. And probably haunted by the guilt for the rest of his life.
My dad worked for Pikes Peak International Raceway during this time. The track flew him to Daytona for training in 2004 during speedweeks. He was actually training with Weaver, and met him that week before he passed away.
A sad lesson on why you always work on the safe side of the truck. Let the truck take the impact. Daytona has an absolutely professional safety team today, and I can't help but think they do it for Roy.

I have to admit, this is one emotional, but detailed explanation video of the 2004 Daytona Dash Series incident. In fact, this is the first time I've known about Turn 2 being hosed down after the crash. Also, rest in peace, Roy H. Weaver III and Ray Paprota. 🙏
To have that Weaver family circle around on a track a year after their father was killed is the most tasteless things ive seen on TV for views. You might as well added cars racing around them at 200 mph to complete "Death Race 2000" theme.
Speaking of the Dash Series and Daytona, given that it's nearly 30 years since it happened, but not a lot know about his back story, it would be nice to see a Gone Too Soon video about Rodney Orr. While many old enough will remember the shock of his and Neil Bonnet's fatal accidents during Speedweeks 1994, probably the worst Speedweeks ever, the year before, Rodney Orr, whose career included switching from Motorcross racing to cars, in 1993 he won the Goody's Dash Series Championship

Both of those crashes that killed Rodney and Russell were absolutely brutal. I'm not sure if even with the extra bar and the hans would of saved either one. From what I understand, Rodney hit roof first and also hit one of the caution lights. And Russell....both were unsurvivable I think. But what do I know. We lost two good people in those wrecks. I do know that.
I raced dirt and pavement off and on from '79-04. I drove a car for a guy on dirt that we thought was a old Dash car. Just the way it was built....the chassis, cage, interior sheet metal was more like a high speed car. Guess it eventually ended up on dirt.we hung a body on it and ran a class called "mini Modifieds." But yea, think it started life as a speedway car.aka Dash Series racecar. Wasn't a full size car, but was well built.
Amazing Race sending Weaver's family to Talladega not even a year after his death is so disgusting. I'm glad they didn't show it on live tv. I was watching it on the tube and didn't know what was going on until that fatal accident with the track worker was mentioned during the red flag. RIP Weaver and Paprota. There was another incident years back before this incident during an ARCA race when an EMT was attending to one of the drivers who crashed then another car lost control at full speed and hit the disabled race car along with the EMT. EMT took the brunt of the hit, landed on the grass and almost run over with the hot tail pipe on his arm. EMT survived.
I’m from Lahaina, Maui and so many of my friends lost their race cars in the fires last August. I used to go down to the race track and just hang out in the pits with my friends. I miss it so much ❤❤
I'll just say as a person who was obsessed with The Amazing Race during this era of the show, the hatred for season 8 family edition from fans had little to do with the Weaver family. Having that team you can root against is the only thing that kept fans watching that mess. Fans hated how watered down the show got by basically being US road trip edition with only 1 continent instead of 4+. And the harsh change from teams of two adults to teams of 4 with kids as young as 8 competing.
I'm really glad this channel exists. Stories like this should NOT be forgotten. A life was loss and it should not be glossed over as it was. Black flag, this channel matters...to me! 🙂
This reminds me of what happened on pit road years ago during a cup race. A driver spun around on pit lane and struck a pit crew member of the Levi Garrett Chevy driven by Geoffe Bodine ( if I remember correctly. ) He was a tire changer & was carrying a wheel when another driver's car spun around & hit him in reverse, killing him instantly. They actually showed the incident on TV, and it was horrible. Up to that point, I had always complained for years that by NOT having a speed limit on pit road, it's a freakin' miracle that no pit crew member had gotten killed. Then this happened, and they immediately mandated the 55 mph speed limit on pit road.
I was there that day working security in the tower. I knew something was wrong when on the radio it was being said “so and so call at ext. such and such” It was very eerie in there. Such a sad evening 😢
I blame NASCAR for this no doubt but blame is to go everywhere. Why did Roy even think of doing this under a yellow flag with cars still driving around? A red flag I get it. And they should have driven him there in the truck close to the debris and he got out and picked it up. Plus this guy looked like he could have used an InShape City membership for sure not in good physical condition to begin with and he is going to climb up that embankment? Just a totally avoidable tragedy, careless and stupid discissions and practices going on there. Very sad indeed..
They hosed down the site where the worker was struck? That says enough. I can recall of only 2 other instances where a track had to be hosed down: Russell Phillips in 95 and Tony Renna in 03.

Thats cool there was a para driver. I used to race in a mini buggy/ stadium lite short course offroad series with a few guys that were paraplegic. The old honda oddysey and pilot buggies were all hand controlled so they would either drive those or retrofit the steering wheels from the pilots to new buggy chassis.
Ironically the ticket booth the wife was walking by at talladega was right next to were davey Allison's helicopter crashed😢. This video is just super sad all around

The Italian has always been extremely popular with fans, whether it would be for his cheerful attitude, his trademark donuts after his many wins in CART, his daring overtake on Brian Herta at the top of the Corkscrew in 1996, his tear jerking return to racing after losing his legs a Eurospeedway Lausitz and his numerous gold medals in the Paralympics at both London in 2012 and Rio in 2016. The sad fact about Alex, apart from his physical limitations due to being a double amputee, is that he could be regarded as an F1 Bust. Despite driving for Jordan, Minardi, Lotus and Williams in the two stages of his F1 career (1991-1994 and 1999) he only scored 1 point in that time, a sixth place finish in Brazil in 1993. Although his two CART titles meant he was legitimately a man in demand for F1, and came to Williams in 1999 with high hopes, not only did he struggle badly, no points scored and a dismal 10 DNF's, and his team mate Ralf Schumacher scored all of Williams points in 1999, rather than seeing out his contract, Williams paid him off and he was replaced for 2000 by a young British rookie called Jenson Button. Wonder how he did
My biggest question is why Nascar removed the car before law enforcement could investigate. Nascar wasn't the sanctioning body so in theory, should have had no authority over that car.
Florida Highway Patrol had jurisdiction due to fatality with motor vehicle. They did a crash investigation with a survey crew afterwards. It took all night. I was there.
This race should have been canceled - This wasn't the result of a racing incident - this was a result of a lack of communication and training - rudimentary training would have prevented this - These racetracks provide track workers - The series itself should handle this - They should be employed by the series and the series should also provide the medical workers - Indy Car racing does this - These groups of people would be consistent and their training would save lives - there would be better communication and a better understanding of procedure no matter what the circumstances
I do wonder if the reason Paprota didnt stop his car to check on the Weaver was because he knew he wasnt able to get out of the car or really go anywhere without help. Or maybe it was just shock and not believing what had happened that caused him to just keep going.
I remember when that accident happened. Paprota was qualified to be in that car. The new sanction should NEVER have begun their series at Daytona. It was negligent and irresponsible to run their first ever race as an officiating crew on a track as demanding of ALL involved as that one is. The sheer lack of communication to the drivers that track crews were entering the racing surface is mind boggling. That's a basic thing the tower should be telling all drivers. I love and miss the Dash Series and I can't help but think that had NASCAR not given up their sanction and just taken the Dash cars to other smaller venues (remember, NASCAR sanctions many levels of racing that have nothing to do with a national TV audience) then Mr. Weaver would still be here. As for the reality tv crap, as shameful as TAR was to make that family go to Talladega, they signed up to be on that show. Which does say quite a lot. You wouldn't catch me on a reality tv show 1 year after I lost a family member let alone ever, but to each their own I guess.
Fox sports will never bring it back because it made them zero money because there was nothing on there that they could charge like they can now with fs1
I'm a volunteer flag marshal who works primarily at mount Panorama, Bathurst NSW, and to hear these stories of other trackside marshals and workers losing their lives like this is devastating. I, myself, almost got hit by a recovery ute/truck back in 2021 cleaning the track following a GT crash, but I was told and warned, and stopped before I risked being hit. Before working for NASCAR, Roy was an assistant pastor at the church I attended. I worked with him in the boys scouting group at church. He was an awesome guy.

I was at the 1999 Goody's Dash Daytona race when Danny Bagwell flipped several times down the frontstretch but climbed out ok. Kind of ironic he ended up winning the race that all this happened. Much like the ill-fated Sportsman Series (1989-1995) these lower budget series for drivers inexperienced on high speed tracks seem to be a breeding ground for tragic accidents. I'm not assigning blame on anyone just pointing out they were scary to watch because I knew severe crashes were almost guaranteed.
I knew about this since the race was uploaded a few years after broadcast and IIRC is or was still up. That being said, I have always had a naggign question that I've never found an answer to... Why was Paprota going at such a speed under caution though, was he told to catch up with the field or thought he had to?wa
Drivers should have been notified. He may have been going that speed bc he wa lucky dog. I feel terrible for him and the family. I'm glad I never watched the Amazing Race. What were they thinking? That was cruel.
Pryce struck the track worker at full speed. He was crossing the track carrying a very large fire extinguisher going across to a car that was pulled over to the side and was burning (not severely, the driver of that car already got out ok). The worker was killed instantly. The fire extinguisher that the worker was carrying struck Pryce in the head which resulted in his death. Totally tragic and avoidable. Occured due to a lack of communication between race control, the workers, and the drivers.
Heard comedian jay Larson auditioned for the great race on “ayg” podcast looked up the show and first video I viewed was the family one for 30 secs and after the family told their story I searched the accident as well and ended up viewing this video and that’s how I got here when I first was watching this thought it was uploaded a few years ago but it was actually uploaded about a month ago Crazy to think where some views come from in the YT world
They should when a death results. Have to check for foul play. In many countries, an on track death triggers an immediate investigation. Senna and Ratzenberger’s deaths at Imola should have triggered immediate closures of the track and investigations.
Yes. Florida Highway Patrol investigates all deaths involving motor vehicles, regardless of location. Was even crash investigation with a survey crew. We ran all the fans out early that night.

I Agree. Rodney was a very good race car driver. Sadly, I don't think even a hans device could of saved Rodney. GOD BLESS Rodney.

My biggest question is why Nascar removed the car before law enforcement could investigate.
Nascar wasn't the sanctioning body so in theory, should have had no authority over that car.
Florida Highway Patrol had jurisdiction due to fatality with motor vehicle. They did a crash investigation with a survey crew afterwards. It took all night. I was there.

I always thought the Charlotte race killed the goody’s dash series
This race should have been canceled - This wasn't the result of a racing incident - this was a result of a lack of communication and training - rudimentary training would have prevented this - These racetracks provide track workers - The series itself should handle this - They should be employed by the series and the series should also provide the medical workers - Indy Car racing does this - These groups of people would be consistent and their training would save lives - there would be better communication and a better understanding of procedure no matter what the circumstances
I believe Daytona has trained track workers. Though they are not full-time obviously since they don’t race every week at Daytona.
The fact this track official died when I was 26 days old. But still, it’s saddening to see this 20 years later.
I do wonder if the reason Paprota didnt stop his car to check on the Weaver was because he knew he wasnt able to get out of the car or really go anywhere without help. Or maybe it was just shock and not believing what had happened that caused him to just keep going.

I remember when that accident happened. Paprota was qualified to be in that car. The new sanction should NEVER have begun their series at Daytona. It was negligent and irresponsible to run their first ever race as an officiating crew on a track as demanding of ALL involved as that one is. The sheer lack of communication to the drivers that track crews were entering the racing surface is mind boggling. That's a basic thing the tower should be telling all drivers. I love and miss the Dash Series and I can't help but think that had NASCAR not given up their sanction and just taken the Dash cars to other smaller venues (remember, NASCAR sanctions many levels of racing that have nothing to do with a national TV audience) then Mr. Weaver would still be here. As for the reality tv crap, as shameful as TAR was to make that family go to Talladega, they signed up to be on that show. Which does say quite a lot. You wouldn't catch me on a reality tv show 1 year after I lost a family member let alone ever, but to each their own I guess.

I'm a volunteer flag marshal who works primarily at mount Panorama, Bathurst NSW, and to hear these stories of other trackside marshals and workers losing their lives like this is devastating.
I, myself, almost got hit by a recovery ute/truck back in 2021 cleaning the track following a GT crash, but I was told and warned, and stopped before I risked being hit.
I shouldn't make this about me.

Before working for NASCAR, Roy was an assistant pastor at the church I attended. I worked with him in the boys scouting group at church. He was an awesome guy.

I was at the 1999 Goody's Dash Daytona race when Danny Bagwell flipped several times down the frontstretch but climbed out ok. Kind of ironic he ended up winning the race that all this happened. Much like the ill-fated Sportsman Series (1989-1995) these lower budget series for drivers inexperienced on high speed tracks seem to be a breeding ground for tragic accidents. I'm not assigning blame on anyone just pointing out they were scary to watch because I knew severe crashes were almost guaranteed.
I knew about this since the race was uploaded a few years after broadcast and IIRC is or was still up. That being said, I have always had a naggign question that I've never found an answer to...

Drivers should have been notified. He may have been going that speed bc he wa lucky dog. I feel terrible for him and the family. I'm glad I never watched the Amazing Race. What were they thinking? That was cruel.
There was a track worker hit by a f1 car that also killed the driver Tom Pryce. Very brutal it's on UA-cam.
Pryce struck the track worker at full speed. He was crossing the track carrying a very large fire extinguisher going across to a car that was pulled over to the side and was burning (not severely, the driver of that car already got out ok). The worker was killed instantly. The fire extinguisher that the worker was carrying struck Pryce in the head which resulted in his death. Totally tragic and avoidable. Occured due to a lack of communication between race control, the workers, and the drivers.
Heard comedian jay Larson auditioned for the great race on “ayg” podcast looked up the show and first video I viewed was the family one for 30 secs and after the family told their story I searched the accident as well and ended up viewing this video and that’s how I got here when I first was watching this thought it was uploaded a few years ago but it was actually uploaded about a month ago

They should when a death results. Have to check for foul play. In many countries, an on track death triggers an immediate investigation. Senna and Ratzenberger’s deaths at Imola should have triggered immediate closures of the track and investigations.
