Something I wish had been mentioned is the kinda unique it-girl moment that Margot Robbie had over 2023, particularly in terms of her decision to very deliberately step away while people still loved her rather than waiting until public opinion turned on her. I think for a lot of it girls it’s hard to know when to disengage or even how to do it, but she’s probably been the most successful at taking her flowers and leaving before people start hating her.
Emma Stone is another one who has done this quite well and figured out by taking breaks in between films and also not being on social media, which helps preserve some mystery. And being very private about her personal life is another key.

I saw people labelling her a JLaw wannabe for talking about drinking beers in the shower and being a fake tomboy etc and then she disappeared before any backlash caught fire. Fully agree, I’ve been following her since 2019 and I just want the best for her. She seems to just be having fun now and after the year she’s had, I’m really happy for her. At the peaks of last year, she had been having a great time on tour and was so happy with her team and friend group and relationship so it was fairly sad to watch when her relationship (presumably) ended and all of her press releases were coming out where she seemed so sad and drained. I’m just happy she’s doing well again and I’m obsessed with the mean girls cast. They seem to genuinely all like each other on this press tour and I excitedly consume all content that comes out from their press run.

I think it's also interesting the point made near the end of the video about how men are percieved in a similar way of creating a dichotomy, in this case it's more like "handsome (sometimes older) guy that everyone is thirsting on, and whose only value is how good he looks" or "weird/funny guy that may be charming because of his charisma, but is expected to be always with 100% of his energy and giving a show (either as himself or as the character he played)".
men are never expected to only be valued by his looks. most older male celebrities who are handsome are considered talented and hard working and well respected plus being handsome.

That's why I emphazised that women have "no right answer". I don't think the "price" that male celebrities pay is the same as their female peers, but it's still bad in some cases like for example, Pedro Pascal, who is mentioned in the video. While he's absolutely praised for his work, every interview I've seen of him (not too many, so maybe I'm wrong) has to mention something about his looks, sometimes to the point of simplifying him as just a good-looking older dude.

I think her music is good I do think some songs are generic but her voice makes them worth listening too. i’ve never perceived any of the artist you named as “rough around the edges” as such. they all have been in the media since children, and you can tell. they’re very well spoken & aware of how to present themselves vocally & physically on camera. if anything, i’d say this is more-so adele, as she was scooped up & expected to know how to present herself despite the fact that as being a music artist, music should & is most likely going to be your main focus. none of those people just randomly came into stardom, it was a gradual incline. they’re just still young & almost everyone at this age has space to grow into stronger public speakers. amy winehouse also had this unprepared for media, rough around the edges, personality. this is typical for artist who have never acted & mostly prioritized their music instead of trying to cultivate a following outside of their music & appease the general public. which isn’t bad, you need both if you want to be a superstar, because some people naturally have it, most need experience.

IMO, the problem isn't that Renee is "brutally honest", it's that she's socially awkward. And yes, it's funny in 10 second clips for tiktok, but if you watch a full interview, it seems like she doesn't know how to talk to people or keep up the flow of conversation. Celebs like Aubrey Plaza or Nathan Fielder are really good at doing this awkward humor while still being engaging. If you can't do both it just comes across (unintentionally) like you're being kind of rude.
I actually think her recent interview with Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert were quite good. It seems like she was enjoying her time being interviewed by then especially with Meyers. I guess Meyers knows how to keep up the conversation with a social awkward person like her and made her comfortable enough, I liked it. Fully agree, it was actually really disappointing to see how much hate she started getting online for being “cringe” as someone who knew her name a long time ago as someone who used to post covers on UA-cam, especially in the musical theater scene. I was really happy for her that she was getting bigger roles because that’s huge and then everyone decided that younger actresses aren’t allowed to act their age anymore. She is inherently going to be slightly cringe because she grew up in the theater scene and she’s young, that’s no reason to hate her.

I was just thinking about this a few days ago, as all the Mean Girls press has shown up on my socials. It seems like a lot of people are loving her rn and calling her lack of media training "charming," but I think it is unfortunately inevitable that once the initial shine of her rising star fades, there will be backlash and we'll be seeing these same clips that people are loving rn resurfacing and being completely picked apart/criticized. I started listening to Reneé’s music after Sex Life of Collage Girls (bummed that she is leaving😢) Some songs are amazing!! I especially like “Snow Angel”, “Pretty Girls” and “Talk Too Much”. Also, the cover to her album is GORGEOUS 😍 I’m thrilled that she’s getting more recognition through Mean Girls! Just hope the public isn’t too hard on her…

I agree 100%. We call out men who say things on their podcasts about women being past their prime after 25, but this woman says it and everyone is so quick to applaud her and agree. Even if it's not her intention, this DOES contribute to sexism and making women feel insecure about age. And the thing is, she's 24, not 14. In a mere 3 or 4 years, she's going to start seeing how society will slowly start treating her differently and make the same sexist remarks back to her. The "It Girl" is a Hollywood creation from the days of Clara Bow to Grace Kelly to JLaw right up till now. The cycle seems to be getting shorter and shorter in the digital age. The Take had a great video on it last year. It always devours its subjects because Hollywood loves novelty and so does its audience. Let's hope Renee enjoys her moment, is not too problematic and transitions into a great career.

Yes! Theater kids/Broadway kids act different from movie actors because stage acting and movie acting are very different. When you're on stage you need to act bigger, have your reactions be more noticeable, because there's not a camera two feet from your face picking up the miniscule changes in emotion. Some people can transfer really well from stage to screen, but there is a fundamental difference in how different kinds of actors act.
I will never understand why the public acts like they're so powerless to these cycles. It's the audience who decides where a celebrity stands with them...

I think one thing that's missed is delivery and tone - you can say whatever you want but it helps if you know and care what tone and language to use in a given situation, and when to shut up, frankly. It ain't right but there it is. This applies to both men and women in the public eye.
I think she comes off as an asshole, just being "brutally honest". There's literally a clip of her on a podcast few months ago telling a story about harassing a Hertz employee to the point they locked themselves inside to keep Renee away from them. That was all because the employee told her that the car she booked wasn't suppose to leave the lot and that they had to call their supervisor to confirm they can take that specific car. What made it worse was that she was laughing about it and bragging about how it "worked" because she still got the car. Hearing that story, it honestly makes me question that whole bus driver thing. Was he really an asshole and disrespectful to her and her mom? Or was it another case of someone just doing their job and that inconvenienced Renee so she freaked out on him, which lead to the driver freaking out on her? I totally agree that women are under more scrutiny in Hollywood, if they say they just did a movie for the money it's a problem, but when a guy says it it's "refreshingly honest". I never understood the backlash to Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, Brie Larson, or Rachel Zegler. None of them really did anything that bad, but for some reason it was enough for people to just start hating them. But, Renee actually puts shit out there herself that makes her look bad, but she does it while smiling and laughing about it, so I guess that makes it okay? Like her saying she's ageist only towards millennial women, doesn't that reinforce the misogyny in Hollywood?
Great video. I think one thing that is relevant to mention is that Reneé Rapp has ADHD. This type of communication style is consistent with that, I think the option of her inadvertently offending the internet is the more likely one in this case (unintentionally saying something offensive and consequential alienation is a common theme people with ADHD have to deal with).
I feel like people saying the groupthink will Turn on Renee is jinxing it. Even the women the women compared to her here feel like a false equivalence. The tide hasn't turned on Jenna, and Rachel isn't on as big a platform as Renee. The difference with Jennifer Lawrence felt like she was trying to be relatable. Nobody cared about her liking pizza, it was the vibe that she was being a pick-me and just aligning herself with trendy Tumblr quirks at the time. Renee never gives the vibe that she's trying to get people to like her or think she's relatable, she just is. I think a better comparison would be Olivia Rodrigo. Transparently, I don't really like her, but she has a similar level of "unfiltered" in interviews/appearances and it just makes people feel like she's more authentic. She's still in the public's good graces. I think the makeup of Renee's fanbase being people around her age and queer people factors in. I just hope this rapid uptick in Renee's popularity accompanied with people making takes like this already implying that her downfall is imminent aren't the reason it happens.

I wish there was a way to criticize female celebrities for how they handle being a celebrity instead of how they handle being a woman. Renee Rapp is a good example of this, and Doja Cat is an even better one. For some reason, when the internet is presented with a woman who is doing a terrible job handling her large platform, and using it to punch down, say harmful things, and disrespect her fans and incredible opportunities, the controversial thing that we all have to talk about is that she's a little quirky. THATS the problem???? That she was a little goofy and "unwomanly" in an interview???? Not that she's using her platform to spread hate??? What are we doing here??????? I'll defend Renee's and Doja's right to be "unwomanly" women until the day I die. And because thats the only conversation we seem to be capable of having right now, I spend most of my time defending them. But someday, when we decide to let them exist as people, we should probably start questioning them as professionals. Because they're really, REALLY bad professionals. I think "trying" is the problem. Just be yourself how about that? To me, it is the "trying" part that we are able to see through and then becomes problematic. Something I wish had been mentioned is the kinda unique it-girl moment that Margot Robbie had over 2023, particularly in terms of her decision to very deliberately step away while people still loved her rather than waiting until public opinion turned on her. I think for a lot of it girls it’s hard to know when to disengage or even how to do it, but she’s probably been the most successful at taking her flowers and leaving before people start hating her.
Emma Stone is another one who has done this quite well and figured out by taking breaks in between films and also not being on social media, which helps preserve some mystery. And being very private about her personal life is another key.
She did the same post Wolf of Wallstreet and The Big Short. I saw people labelling her a JLaw wannabe for talking about drinking beers in the shower and being a fake tomboy etc and then she disappeared before any backlash caught fire. I think she and her team pay verrrrrry close attention to the chatter about her online.

Fully agree, I’ve been following her since 2019 and I just want the best for her. She seems to just be having fun now and after the year she’s had, I’m really happy for her. At the peaks of last year, she had been having a great time on tour and was so happy with her team and friend group and relationship so it was fairly sad to watch when her relationship (presumably) ended and all of her press releases were coming out where she seemed so sad and drained. I’m just happy she’s doing well again and I’m obsessed with the mean girls cast. Just like someone else said, there is no "right" answer, so they might as well have fun and live their way. I think it's also interesting the point made near the end of the video about how men are percieved in a similar way of creating a dichotomy, in this case it's more like "handsome (sometimes older) guy that everyone is thirsting on, and whose only value is how good he looks" or "weird/funny guy that may be charming because of his charisma, but is expected to be always with 100% of his energy and giving a show (either as himself or as the character he played)".
men are never expected to only be valued by his looks. most older male celebrities who are handsome are considered talented and hard working and well respected plus being handsome.

I don't think the "price" that male celebrities pay is the same as their female peers, but it's still bad in some cases like for example, Pedro Pascal, who is mentioned in the video. While he's absolutely praised for his work, every interview I've seen of him (not too many, so maybe I'm wrong) has to mention something about his looks, sometimes to the point of simplifying him as just a good-looking older dude.

I unapologetically love Reneé Rapp. I think she is one of the (if not the) most exciting young person we have coming up in the entertainment industry. I would love for her to be on Broadway again, I've loved her in all the different incarnations of Mean Girls. I thought she was tremendous in the Mean Girls Movie Musical. Snow Angel is fantastic, I'm loving it so much. I've been a fan of her for a long time now, and I don't think that'll ever stop.

IMO, the problem isn't that Renee is "brutally honest", it's that she's socially awkward. And yes, it's funny in 10 second clips for tiktok, but if you watch a full interview, it seems like she doesn't know how to talk to people or keep up the flow of conversation. Celebs like Aubrey Plaza or Nathan Fielder are really good at doing this awkward humor while still being engaging. If you can't do both it just comes across (unintentionally) like you're being kind of rude.

I actually think her recent interview with Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert were quite good. It seems like she was enjoying her time being interviewed by then especially with Meyers. I guess Meyers knows how to keep up the conversation with a social awkward person like her and made her comfortable enough, I liked it. Though I've heard of Renee Rapp before and was aware of her, I haven't watched any of Renee Rapp's acting projects or listened to her music, and I do not have Twitter or Tiktok, so these clips were my first introduction to her. And, to be honest, I don't really think this kind of personality is all that "refreshing." There are plenty of others who act like this, and not just women. The attention just happens to be on her at the moment.

There is this weird take people have when someone either joins a long-running franchise or a remake which is that they MUST BE a massive fan of said property to act on it which is, like, not a thing. Fully agree, it was actually really disappointing to see how much hate she started getting online for being “cringe” as someone who knew her name a long time ago as someone who used to post covers on UA-cam, especially in the musical theater scene. I was really happy for her that she was getting bigger roles because that’s huge and then everyone decided that younger actresses aren’t allowed to act their age anymore. She is inherently going to be slightly cringe because she grew up in the theater scene and she’s young, that’s no reason to hate her.
The thing is that Renee Rapp fully embraces her character type and what’s truly right for her instead of bragging about “Imma real Disney Princess”! I sure hope she’s another one to play Ursula for a future Little Mermaid production as she totally resembles Sherie Rene Scott!
I wasn’t aware of all that hate at the time but i wonder if some it wasn’t a factor of the fact that Disney live remake fatigue and hatred was already settling in and then the main character/actor says what she says, and so the only remaining enthusiastic hard core Disney nut fans are offended. I was just thinking about this a few days ago, as all the Mean Girls press has shown up on my socials. It seems like a lot of people are loving her rn and calling her lack of media training "charming," but I think it is unfortunately inevitable that once the initial shine of her rising star fades, there will be backlash and we'll be seeing these same clips that people are loving rn resurfacing and being completely picked apart/criticized. It is so predictable.

It’s cool to act like you don’t give a fuck about how you are perceived but sooner or later it starts to matter and the whole act gets toned down.
I think not giving a fuck is not a bad thing, it's just that when you're such a public figure, you do kind of have to give a fuck a little bit if you want people to like you. It doesn't mean you should have to change who you are to conform to society's standards, but being so public does mean you have to watch yourself much more closely.

Also, the cover to her album is GORGEOUS 😍 I’m thrilled that she’s getting more recognition through Mean Girls! Just hope the public isn’t too hard on her…

I agree 100%. We call out men who say things on their podcasts about women being past their prime after 25, but this woman says it and everyone is so quick to applaud her and agree. Even if it's not her intention, this DOES contribute to sexism and making women feel insecure about age. And the thing is, she's 24, not 14. In a mere 3 or 4 years, she's going to start seeing how society will slowly start treating her differently and make the same sexist remarks back to her. I’ve been loosely following Renee since she did Mean Girls on Broadway, didn’t get to see her in the role but I remember seeing clips and being blown away by her voice and thinking what a fantastic replacement choice she was. Yes! Theater kids/Broadway kids act different from movie actors because stage acting and movie acting are very different. When you're on stage you need to act bigger, have your reactions be more noticeable, because there's not a camera two feet from your face picking up the miniscule changes in emotion. Some people can transfer really well from stage to screen, but there is a fundamental difference in how different kinds of actors act.
I will never understand why the public acts like they're so powerless to these cycles. It's the audience who decides where a celebrity stands with them...

I think she comes off as an asshole, just being "brutally honest". There's literally a clip of her on a podcast few months ago telling a story about harassing a Hertz employee to the point they locked themselves inside to keep Renee away from them. That was all because the employee told her that the car she booked wasn't suppose to leave the lot and that they had to call their supervisor to confirm they can take that specific car. What made it worse was that she was laughing about it and bragging about how it "worked" because she still got the car. Hearing that story, it honestly makes me question that whole bus driver thing. Was he really an asshole and disrespectful to her and her mom? Or was it another case of someone just doing their job and that inconvenienced Renee so she freaked out on him, which lead to the driver freaking out on her?

This type of communication style is consistent with that, I think the option of her inadvertently offending the internet is the more likely one in this case (unintentionally saying something offensive and consequential alienation is a common theme people with ADHD have to deal with).

I feel like people saying the groupthink will Turn on Renee is jinxing it. Even the women the women compared to her here feel like a false equivalence. The tide hasn't turned on Jenna, and Rachel isn't on as big a platform as Renee. The difference with Jennifer Lawrence felt like she was trying to be relatable. Nobody cared about her liking pizza, it was the vibe that she was being a pick-me and just aligning herself with trendy Tumblr quirks at the time. Renee never gives the vibe that she's trying to get people to like her or think she's relatable, she just is.
I think a better comparison would be Olivia Rodrigo. Transparently, I don't really like her, but she has a similar level of "unfiltered" in interviews/appearances and it just makes people feel like she's more authentic. She's still in the public's good graces.

I wish there was a way to criticize female celebrities for how they handle being a celebrity instead of how they handle being a woman. And because thats the only conversation we seem to be capable of having right now, I spend most of my time defending them. But someday, when we decide to let them exist as people, we should probably start questioning them as professionals. Because they're really, REALLY bad professionals.

I think "trying" is the problem. Just be yourself how about that? To me, it is the "trying" part that we are able to see through and then becomes problematic. Using your example of Jennifer Lawrence; she may be irreverent and a bit silly in real life, but in interviews and such her demeanor reads as fake and disingenuous, rather than the actual personality of an actual person.
