I’m an educator and I have a student with autism who reminds me a lot of Evie. Luckily they are mainstreamed into normal classroom settings; being with peers your own age is important. They have an aide that attends most classes and assists as needed. We adore this student because who they portray is 100% authentic!

Hi Crystal and Aaron! I am a therapist, and I used to work with kids with autism in the past. I specifically worked with two kids, a kid was high functioning, and the other one was pretty severe. In Evie's case just from watching your videos, it looks like she is pretty high functioning which means that attending public school shouldn't be bad. I think that the negatives of a special ed class or school for a high functioning kid is that they don't match the real world where they are exposed with people who do not have a diagnosis or who are diagnosed with other conditions and the goal would be for Evie to become independent in the future since it is possible for her. If Evie is struggling in school, it would make sense to transfer her to another school where classroom sizes are smaller though.
In terms of ABA, I think it's great and you don't have to be worried about it as long as you find an agency that provides the right interventions for Evie. The interventions should always be tailored towards the client's needs. Also, there are agencies that offer home based ABA therapy, and I'm sure if you saw a therapist live interacting and using the interventions with Evie might bring you peace of mind.
I don't know about resources in Arizona since I am from Connecticut, but I'm sure you can find amazing ones out there. You're amazing parents and I know you'll do a great job.

You also have to take into consideration that we only see a very very small snip it of Evie so you can't go by what your seeing on here, there are many hours of Evie's day we don't see so you truly can't go by "in Evie's case" because you really don't truly know her or what her true needs are.

My daughter is high functioning. We have her in ABA for two hours only a week and it was life changing! Not just for her, but for us. We realized if we changed our behavior then she would respond different. For instance, breaking cleaning her room into smaller steps that can be done with breaks. Or whispering when speaking because she doesn't understand tones. ABA has helped us to understand the cause of behaviors and how we can work together to get through them. You got this! And don't be afraid to reach out to other parents.

As someone who works in the ABA field, I definitely recommend doing thorough research on the companies that provide ABA therapy. I've seen tremendous improvements in the kiddos I've worked with, but that all occurs if you're providing ethical services. Some companies are definitely better than others.
Also, you as a parent can decide how many hours your child gets services, and since Evie is older, she should also have a say on what feels best for her. But definitely look into a company and ask a lot of questions when interviewing them. Decide if you want in home services or center based services. If you decide on center based, ask if you can have a tour of the center. All in all, I hope Evie gets the services she needs.

I am diagnosed with Asperger’s(outdated but essentially just autism). I agree! For me it was actually very helpful. Before ABA I struggled a lot socially, still do kinda but not as bad. I also was failing in school in only 3rd grade but after getting my diagnosis and getting therapy, I was placed in advanced classes the next year after taking a test. It was called “focus” which looking back, a lot of us were just “high functioning” neurodivergents lol. When we got to middle school is when I realized it was “honors” classes we were in 😅 I was never dumb, I just needed to be in a classroom with others like me and smaller classes. It worked for me but definitely not the experience for everyone.

I have 2 sons with autism and every autistic child is different.
My eldest son shows more signs than my youngest son.
What helped me the most is keeping them on a schedule.
When they know what to expect and what will happen at what time they feel in “ control “
make the days predictable and try to limit sudden changes.
When they have a sense of control it makes it easier to process the emotions and outside noise.
I also moved them to a smaller school with less children in each classroom ( 12) and got some extra specialized help at school when they get overwhelmed they can leave the classroom and go to a timeout room.
I have so many other suggestions but these were the biggest game changers.
My son said this : sometimes the world doesn’t understand me and I don’t understand the world.
But I always try to find a middle ground even when it’s too overwhelming. ❤

I bought the book that Alex gave to Aaron. I have completed about 90% of it. Honestly, for me, it has made me dig deep as I was abused as a child by family members. My boys are aware of it, but I’m having trouble writing about it as I don’t know how much to share, or if that’s something that needs to be written. I feel like it does. It’s just hard for me to put it in words. There is healing and doing so.
I love the way the boys were with Ember. They’re gonna be good daddy someday because of the way they were treated at your house. They have been guided by you to parent in a loving way. Such a blessing to all of them.❤

Autism definitely has a spectrum. There's a gentleman I dated who is autistic, but very disciplined and honestly one of the most mindful, thoughtful people I've met. He thanks marital arts for that. I also do childcare at my church and have 3-4 children with Autism that I care for. It's interesting because they're all so different. I'd try putting her in a type of martial art. She'd learn self-defense plus she can learn to center herself! 😊
Evie is such a sweet child. I'm confident that she will do swimmingly in any space you decide is best for her. ❤

My 3rd son, now 25 has Autism. He is high functioning and does really well socially, but he does find new or different social situations difficult. At primary school (we are in the uk, so primary is age 5-11) they forcast that he would not do well academically, but we were very fortunate and he got a place in a public school, with a speech and language unit within it. He did very well at GCSE level and A levels and went to university where he graduated with a first in Theatre Studies. We found patience, understanding and listening to him as well as explaining when he was frustrated, why he might have misunderstood something. Watching Evie now, reminds me of Zak at her age, how she repeats things you say (it’s her way of confirming that she’s understood the situation). I’ve also noticed how much she’s come on socially, living with such a big family…..for example she doesn’t cut in or talk over the top of people as much, which is fabulous when you consider how short a time she’s been with your family in relative terms. She’s a lovely child, very bright I think and she will go far and succeed in life. Our. Consultant said that high functioning children with autism often come into themselves at around about puberty (grow more self aware) and I can see that already with Evie. I wish her all the luck in the world for her future. Jen 🇬🇧
Ps, there’s no point in me recommending books I used as times have moved on, but if you want to chat via messenger I’m happy to help as I have a lot of experience in this field and have a wide friendship group of parents with similar experiences, as we formed a support group to help one another through the difficult times. It definitely gets easier as they start to understand themselves. Jx

Loved seeing all the kids with the baby. For Evie it depends on what level of Autism she has. My son has Asbergers he is higher functioning and when he was in elementary he was in a self contained classroom so they could help him learn how to deal with different situations and how to speak up kindly when something was wrong or he was just bored instead of disturbing the whole class. As he moved to middle school we main streamed into regular class rooms with An IEP. He graduated with honors and now holds a full time job at Starbucks because he loves coffee and making people happy. To help him day to day we had a routine printed out on the back of his bedroom door.( not so much times. Just things he needed to achieve during the day. ) if you would like on what was on it please feel free to ask.) At the bottom it read sometimes things will happen and will change your day. When possible we will let you know the day before. This helped control and kind of melt down or nervous energy.

Hi Crystal and Aaron I don't live in USA, but I am a nursing sister and midwife. When my eldest son was 6 weeks old I knew something was not right (no eye contact) but paediatrician brushed me off. Anyway I followed my gut, at 14 months he was diagnosed with severe sensory integration disorder. Finally at 5 was diagnosed on the spectrum. My 3rd child a girl masked so much that we only figured it out at 13. So girls mask so well, but it causes so much anxiety.
Both of them did lots of sensory therapy as that is a huge issue with possible meltdowns, blurting out, lashing out etc. Both my kids had school concessions as both also have ADHD, which is extremely common with ASD (autism spectrum disorder). And for my daughter, she is allowed to use noise cancelling headphones when the teachers are not talking, and even go for a walk around the field to calm herself. They both did socialisation groups with an occupational therapist who helped with identification of facial expressions.
An interesting exercise is getting 2 or 3 kids to make a happy face, then a sad face etc, without looking at each other, and often you will see the ASD ones pull the same face for everything, my middle 2 year old got all the right faces when the 5 year old pulled the same expression over and over. So I found it good for them to help understand expressions. Both did counselling to understand themselves and learn tools to explain themselves in a positive way. My son being less interested in that though pulled out of it. My daughter has been way more into understanding how her brain works, but it is also part of her "obsessive" ASD behaviour.
She has friends who understand her and know when she gets stuck on a topic to gently move her along. The hardest part is she has 2 good friends, one since age 2 whose brothers are ASD hence understands my daughter ( they are both 17 now). My so has not been so lucky. We were told to get him to try scouts, and that was his saving grace. He even went to Japan as part of world jamboree. He has acquaintances, but no real close friends which has been like a knife in my heart for years. He is a retail manager, the youngest ever and that is his "social life" he is now 25. At age 11 he asked me why no one wants be his friend. Was the most heartbreaking thing , I get wheepy even now thinking about it. What I can say is as they grow they learn how the world works.
As one psychologist who was our lifeline (until her death) said : it's like a left handed person trying to fit into a right handed world, it's not wrong, it's not right, it just is so. So left handed have to try figure how to manage in this right-handed world.
Remember ASD is all about neurological scrambling so they see emotions differently, they think differently (which the world needs), they speak differently and so it goes.
My daughter has often been frowned upon as she loves horror movies. But they don't scare her as she doesn't get caught up in the emotion and instead spends time analysing the movies shadows, sounds etc to see how it could have been made better. But of course sadly many see this as "weird".
Sadly that comes with ASD - I have lost count on how many times my 2 amazing children have been called odd, weird or many people once friends just shut us all out of their lives.
So whatever you do on your channel to encourage people to be open and stop the meaness that so many ASD suffer, please do it.
Evie will have skills and abilities that no one else has because of her brain wiring, it's her gift, and with you guys by her side she will take that gift and fly. 🩷

My youngest son. Was diagnosed at 3. They told me he would never talk, go to school, have friends, play sports, or be a functioning human. They told me to figure out who would care for him after i couldn't anymore. Talk about being devastated. But I went a different route and used a therapist that specialized in Eastern world therapies as well as aba. Today, he is 16. Top student in his class. He plays sports, has friends, is the best brother and uncle, with a heart of gold. He still struggles with social anxiety, but you wouldn't know it. I think kids with autism have been sent to us to change the world for the better. ❤

Hi Aaron and Crystal! Mental health clinician here! I wook look into seeking Occupational Therapy services for Evie. OT focuses on the individuality of the client. It promotes independence and overall wellbeing of the client. Additionally, OT looks into the sensory and emotional processing of the client, which might be beneficial for Evie based on what you've shared in your videos. Whereas ABA focuses mainly on targeting the behaviors by using reinforcements. ABA believes that behaviors can change and attempt to modify those behaviors. If you go the ABA route, please make sure that whatever service provider you end up choosing is ethical because many of them out there claim to be but aren't.

I have a few nephews on the spectrum and my son is as well. ABA I think is circumstantial to the child. Some kids thrive with it and some kids do not. A lot of adults on the spectrum that did ABA will always tell you it is awful for the child. But there are many different types of ABA and different types of therapies. Child led based therapy is the route we are going with our son. (He's almost 3) and the best thing about it is if we feel it doesn't work for him we will pull him out. We will never force him to make eye contact and we always encourage him to be himself. I'd say the best advice I can give is if the therapy is changing the child in a way that makes them change who they are at their core, then it's probably not a good therapy. ABA is supposed to teach coping mechanisms for every day trials, not change the child completely to fit into social norms.

My bonus 5 yr old grandson is nonverbal autistic and is in an ABA program. It has done so much good for him.
My 19 year old son was diagnosed gifted in kindergarten, and autistic in 3rd grade. He was mainstream classroom with gifted pull out program (1 day a week) in elementary school, and took a "social personal" class all of middle/ high school (1 class period out of 7).

My 11 year old daughter was just diagnosed last year with high functioning autism. The tween years are sparse in their offering of help. It took us almost a year to finally get some ABA therapy for our daughter. Her deficiencies present when she is out socially and in school. We finally have a therapist that is attending Summer camp with her and will hopefully be able to visit her school with her in the fall. I will say that when we moved her to a private school with smaller class sizes, she was able to blossom and begin learning how to navigate situations. I'm reading the book "Unstuck and on Target" which is helpful and also taking a course from Children's Mercy hospital that has provided several tips and options to try. Hang in there!

Autism kids are so special. They are very loving, love hugs, they also love quality time with them. People might see them as hyper and all but they are just so special. They are very smart. They are a little picky with foods but are willing to try new things.

They are very special, but also all very different. Not all are the same in their preferences and what they like/love. My child's eating is beyond "picky" to the point he has a feeding tube and he will not try new things, no matter how much therapy and encouragement he has/gets.

My daughter was diagnosed with Autism at 2 years old. I’ve known she was different or something was not right and off when she was only 3 months old. She’s extremely high functioning and is in public school. She receives food therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, life skills, and ABA therapy. It is a lot and a whole lot of money! I’m always the biggest advocate for “you do what is best for you,” not whatever is best for everyone else. Intensive ABA looks different for everyone. Yes my daughter has intensive ABA but only sees an RBT for 2.5 hours on MWF. Goals look different from one child to another. Again, Autism does not look the same from one child to another. Love on your child, give lots of hugs, lots of time is needed. Give her the sensory input that she needs and honestly I’m at a point where I feel like I know everything about my child and can remove her from ABA so we can have a little bit more time together without the ABA. You will get there and get through whatever you put your mind to. Sending you love through the hard times. Remember that good times always outweigh the hard times! You guys got this!

Autism coach for a school district and I do agree that ABA therapy is really good. There's also a thing called autism burnout that you might want to look up. It's such a big spectrum it's just dependent on a case-by-case basis so it you need to do to make sure they're successful. My grandson also has autism he's 8. He's high-functioning like Evie. My grandson also benefited from being in a small setting classroom.

I had a few clients before my path diverted from autism. The last was a very dependent/low functioning boy that I worked with for a couple of years. In the early 2000s we called his case "severe" autism. Juxtapose that with a grad school mate* (we went to the same school, different programs) who got her PhD in disability advocacy and taught others to recognize autistic people as an identity and not a disease or "people who HAVE autism."
ABA started out as a method to help people "with" autism integrate into "normal" society as independently as possible. Noble in it's own rite but not quite getting it.
ABA is a useful convention in the modern world, but I'd consider it more as a single therapy and not The Path.
Evie may or may not pursue advanced degrees, but she sure seems smart and eager. She's surely masking as well.
Whatever you do, getting her 1:1 attention and not being lost in the crowd is highly important.
In any case, I can only see her thriving now that she is your daughter and she will only make your family more intelligent to the world we share - neurotypicals and neurodivergents alike.
Evie, you are amazing. Rock this world!
*Edited to clarify: my grad school mate who got her PhD is autistic

I have never commented on your videos but watching today something told me I needed to. I watch you and the crazy middles and adore both of your families. Your children and you are so blessed to have one another. I don’t have much to offer as far as opinions on autism, but I feel that with the family you have given Evie I have seen her blossom and know that she will flourish no matter what you decide.

Love the video seeing how tender all the kids were with the baby. I am 23 and have been dealing with autism for as long since a very young age, I have the autism called Asperger’s. It makes going through my day challenging sometimes, but I’m able to do it and there are plenty of resources out there they can definitely help maybe looking further into seeing if she might need an IEP, which could help her get into a class they could help her and work with her being having autism makes learning sometimes difficult. I wish you the best of luck and finding her the best tools she needs. Love your family. Very much

Every individual on the spectrum is different. She has the added stressor of her past trauma. Love her and get to know her. The psychologist and the school will be good starting points to discuss needs and services. Your parent instinct will play an important role when advocating for her. What works for one child on the spectrum not necessarily will work for another. Wishing you the best. You guys are wonderful and I’m sure will do what is in her best interest.

I work as an ABA Behavior Technician. ABA can be very beneficial. Each kiddo gets a specific treatment plan that’s made specifically for them. The BCBA will do an evaluation and come up with goals that they feel the kiddo can work towards and improve their daily living. You as the parents do have a say in the treatment plan and have to approve it before it’s implemented. I would suggest looking into the different companies and meeting the BCBAs and staff at them to see what the best fit would be for your family and Evie. They also will teach you how to implement some of the techniques so you’re able to work on things at home as well. It’s very rewarding seeing kids progress in their goals and seeing them master goals.
