I raised pastured egg layers. Once, I moved the coop just a little too far, and the girls couldn't find it at dusk. They were congregating where it used to be. With dark approaching, I was desperate. I gathered as many cages as I could, drove my truck into the field, and placed their ramp up into the bed of my truck. They marched into the bed of the truck as I quickly caged them. I had around 60 chickens and was more careful after that. 😂
I’m in the process of a similar overhaul on my grandfathers old farm. I knew I wanted the land to work for me, not vice versa. I can’t stress enough how much this video has brought up my spirits. I was constantly second guessing my decisions and wondering if I’m just learning lessons that the older generation had already learned and moved on from because they discovered a more effective method. This put my stress as ease.
19:42 we run out small place the same way. Have 2 dogs that stay at the house while we move our sheep. Sheep will follow happy as if we r quiet and clam.
Totally right your way ahead on your farm. I grew up on a 160 acre land grant in Ohio. Small dairy and hog operation. I worked for these two men as a boy very old father and son that was in the Second World War hay field pasture and a bottom field for corn. Your doing 100% better then say farmers 75 years ago or longer back when the midwest states turned into the dust bowl. You should write a book on this type of farm and how to work it like this.
If I have an issue with the bale not wanting to roll out all the way eve though is unrolling correctly against how it was rolled originally is to drive it in reverse for a bit then continue forward. Might have to do it several times but I always get the bale to fully unroll. Have 2 GJ bale unrollers and love them. I also attached hay forks directly to the unroller so I always have it available to lightly spread out an real thick patches.
All your activities are my future goals. Would love to hear how you made the leap from being a nurse to becoming a farmer because I want to do the same.

Tammy the donkey stays with the cows, gets along with them and if a predator such as fox or coyote comes into the pasture...the donkey kicks it's butt!

I agree with the biomass, I just struggle with bringing off another piece of land (thus depleting) to feed your land....But we do what we have to do. I do the same. Best thing I ever did was moving my dogs to the BARF diet lots of chicken backs leg quarters along with organ meat and veggies. You don’t have to worry about the poop it turns white and hard after a day and crumbles into the ground like dust. They’ll drink a lot less water on that diet as well.
Josh, as a city guy I don't understand how you avoid losing chickens to daytime predators. I also must be underestimating the birds, do they all return to the coop at night before the door closes,or do you end up with stragglers remaining outside overnight? Thanks.
chickens establish patterns...they go back to the roost every night..no stragglers my friend. As for daytime predators....I'm looking at guard geese to help with this
I was wondering about your marketing plan for selling all that beef you will be producing. To sell pasture/grass raised beef direct to the consumer at a premium price to make it profitable isn't easy, is very competitive and success depends on conditions in your market area and a well thought out marketing plan. Do you have a USDA inspected butcher shop nearby? You seem to have a lot of high cost infrastructure and tooling for a start up farm without an established market. Please comment on your plans for how this will work commercially to help others who are interested in starting a similar venture. Thanks!
However the rooster might protect the chickens against predators that are a few feet away, I think he's also the one yelling to predators miles away, that there's s a rooster over here. So there's probably chickens too. Also, a rooster might give the chickens a false sense of security, so they don't run and hide when a predator appears, they just stay close to the rooster, who's attacking the predator(s)... So you might want to reconsider whether you really want a rooster with your chickens all of time.

The profit margins are thin enough as it is... so ANYTHING the farmer/rancher can do to lower/eliminate the overhead expenses will be well worth the effort! It kind of reminds me of the ol' country preacher who said no matter how horrible they might be, all humans have at least two redeeming features. Jesus loves them... and they are biodegradable! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! I was glad to see that the, "Great Chicken Massacre", by foxes, did not bring your Pasture Clean Up Experiment to a screeching halt. The benefits still outweigh the potential risks! Keep plugging away at it... and enjoy the "Small Victories", along the way!
Can cows eat clover if so do you put down clover seed? Also do you aerate the soil i belive clover looses the soil and adds nitrogen. Its natural. Been thinking about putting down clover seed in my yard just for a healthier lawn.
My granddaddy died in 1959. He farmed 40 ac of mostly tobacco and cotton plus . He used horses or mules. He didn't have a tractor. I laughed at the title.
You have a cat that likes dog food but I have a dog that has stopped eating dog food and will only eat the cat's food. I take care of about fifteen to twenty head of cats that live in the area in my neighborhood and about six months ago or so he decided he no longer wanted to eat his dog food so now he eats cat food. It doesn't seem to have adversely affected him so I guess he could do worse. He is a medium-sized 25lb dog and 13 years of age and probably won't be around too much longer so I let him eat just about what he wants.
this was filmed about 2 days before foxes got to the chickens...it's not older...it's just the same week...remember I'm out filming every day, but sometimes the vids can get out of sequence

every pasture has some shade trees.....some have more than others....every pasture edge has trees on at least one side....you have to remember this is not a 100 year old farm...this is all new...and it takes time to grow new shade trees. Most of the trees we left after cutting timber had their roots bruised and eventually died....more coming soon on all this as I start replanting shade areas on the farm....that's "why"....I can't simply make a mature tree appear out of nowhere my friend

Grass sucks no good flavor, just cheap way to feed cows and charge more for grass. I feed my steers 21/2 gallons of grain a day and it has a amazing taste. So too all you guys selling grass fed cattle and charging more is cow shit !!!

After all.....bovine animals have only been eating grass since the last ice age .....grain is probably the best thing for them ....you see....you're thinking about cheap food and I'm thinking about cattle genetics and ruminant animal biology.....you're totally right....cheap GMO grain is the way to go!! We do things a little different than my grandpa did , one thing is cross fence to rotational graze , he wanted just big open pastures
