Honestly, Warlock written by anyone than Jim Starlin in the 70s has never been that interesting. The Starlin take on that character is unmatched (the number of times his run has been reprinted is proof of that), but, before Starlin got Warlock he was known as "Him"... a one-and-done character. I think it was smart for Gunn to focus on "Him" as an easily manipulated, naive being suddenly introduced to life rather than "Adam" the space messiah.
That is SO true and I forgot to mention him bc honestly.... 🤣 I forgot about him, which is a bad thing. I even forgot they teased him in a previous movie. They made it appear as if he'd have a significant role, but he didn't. They should have made him his own film. Also... why is he so weak? The excuse is he came out of his pod early... but then.... the start of the movie doesn't seem to line up with that. Is he weak because he was injured? Why is he the only one with those powers? WHO IS HE? 🤣 Yeah, I agree. He was forgettable with the exception of the first part of the movie and him being the catalyst for Rocket getting mortally wounded; and even in that regard, I forgot he was the reason and mainly focused on Rocket dying.... VERY slowly. Your video was awesome btw! Very fair review! 😄
Rocket's backstory...My God. Nebula knows firsthand what it’s like to be experimented on, even says that Rocket’s suffering was even worse than what Thanos did to her. 😢
In my opinion Comic Nebula is worse than this. Literally a lone space zombie pleading to be ended. But damn, this Raccoon's friend backstory is so fucked up.
I still think Nebula got it worse... like, her body parts including her eyes were literally replaced... At least Rocket still has parts of his body left.
@@MagicalArtist7 Yes, Thanos even replaced her brain, so she isn't even the real Nebula anymore but a digital robot copy of the person she once was. But EVEN THEN Thanos could not break her spirit, and her journey through the movies has been awesome. Despite all she went through, all that hate that was drilled into her, she still found herself a caring family and a future worth fighting for.
The actor playing the villain destroyed that role, I’ve never felt so good seeing a character in a movie hurt. I also hope he gets more work after this, getting the audience to hate a character is much harder than getting them to love one!!! Incredible performance
The only movies that deserve the guardians of the galaxy humor is guardians of the galaxy. The other marvel movies don’t need it throughout the whole movie. Iron man would be the only exception. Thor should have stayed more serious like the first movie compared to the others.
To be honest, I absolutely loved this movie. I think this movie did an excellent job with all the characters. I almost cried multiple times while watching😢 This movie was what the MCU has been lacking since Endgame(Excluding No way home).
As someone who is obsessed with raccoons and everything about them, this movie hit me on the deepest levels with Rocket's entire arc. The High Evolutionary immediately went to the top of my villain shit-list...
Been waiting for a darker, more serious take on the Guardians of the Galaxy because the comic is deep in tone quite often. Its decades old and has a lot of prestige and doesnt deserve to be reduced into mere genre fare. This is good stuff.
Oh Floor...why you had to make me cry, Gunn? This movie is probably the first MCU movie that made me cried watching it. Rocket's backstory is so depressing.
It broke me, I was not ready for this movie. There's a few problems but what I'm really upset is * spoilers ........* That when rocket sees his friends in the afterlife. Why are they in there deformed image . Why aren't they as they where before they got experimented on
@@MrSolobear333 SPOILERS: I don’t think any of them can even remember what they looked or felt like before being experimented on. But, to properly answer your question, they’re all their true selves after they became friends and named themselves

agreed, his first scene was good, but he should have stayed as a character who we saw maybe 3 times, but because Taika has be in his own films he had to be a constantly reoccurring character who is just there to make jokes.
@@jacksoneee6759 Only one director has ever been good at inserting himself into his movies: Alfred Hitchcock. That's because he never ever made his self-insert character be the focus at all. He was always a background character, like someone getting on the bus or something.
Korg would have been fine and remembered fondly if he was just in ragnarok and no other movies. Is he overdone a bit in ragnarok, absolutely but if it was self contained it would have been charming.
I especially “loved” how they just retcond his whole race in love in thunder so they could make him gay. For reference: he mentions his mother in Ragnarok but then in Love and thunder he says his race reproduces by two males holding hands over a lava pool. 🙄

The best way I can describe this movie is a big ass middle finger to modern Marvel. I feel like Gunn saw where it was headed after phase 4 and said, how can we flip this formula on its head.
Chukwudi Iwuji, who played The High Evolutionary (and did a fantastic job) also played a major character in the awesome, raunchy, fun HBO Max series "Peacemaker" (starring John Cena as the same character he played in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad). And yes, Peacemaker was written and mostly directed by James Gunn.
This movie was extremely bittersweet for me and my family. We saw all of the Guardians movies together and now its over. With most of the main marvel line up gone I dont have a lot of hope for the future. Its been a hellova ride.
I really liked this movie. I knew if they explored Rocket's backstory it would be dark, and James Gunn delivered. I'm glad it wasn't washed over and sanitized like every other movie from Disney. And Peter was still a competent leader and finally made up with his grandfather. ❤ ❤ Just wish Adam had been better utilized.
Mom passed away from brain cancer when I was a kid so the opening scene for GotG 1 hit hard. This movie hit hard as an animal lover, and how my dog (my avatar) recently passed and him and he kind of looked like a Yorkie version of rocket. I don’t think I’ve felt as satisfied about a villain getting theirs since John Wick.
The difference between James Gunn's comedy and those of other Marvel movies is it has purpose, whether it's just to be funny or to flesh out the characters and make them feel like genuine friends. The comedy in other movies is desperate, aimless and ultimately kills emotional scenes while Gunn knows when to actually take things seriously
This was Gunn’s goodbye piece. He didn’t want any of Marvel’s modern tendencies and problems to ruin his series, so he got his 3 hours to rap up as much as he could, and by God, it’s been a long time since a movie from Marvel made me think.
I think the main problem with this movie was pacing and the usage of their characters. The guardians themselves were utilised very well, they all got a lot of screen time and characterisation. However Adam Warlock and The High Evolutionary were a little underused, I felt they needed more time on screen and more backstory. Also I thought the focus on Rockets backstory and the departure from the traditional guardians team was an amazing sendoff and surprisingly upsetting. I’m not a cryer the only movies that have ever upset me was Marley and me, Logan and well….this. Let’s just hope this movie is an indication marvel can progress slowly back to its glorious state and make good films like Iron man, Endgame, Infinity War and Civil War I want marvel films with underlying serious and dark tones like the comics, it’s so strange to think that the comics are so much darker and serious than the movies….the comic…you know the things we all used to read as kids….is more serious than a movie…the thing we all used to have to get permission to go to. Anyways great video Alteori I feel like you touched base with a lot of the things I noticed.
100% agree! Commented similar. We want darker serious type tones. Where there are stakes that we can feel. Even films like Thor Dark World, Iron Man 3, etc aren’t the best, we felt the possible stakes, so-to-speak.
I mean yes those two were underused and underdeveloped but the problem I see is that many of the same people that say that say Guardians 1 was the best of the 3. Then could we talk about Ronan? He was as shallow as they come. But he was never meant to be important, he was a challenge for the guardians to face so they'd finally come together. I think the high evolutionary had the same purpose really. The story wasn't about the guardians vs the villains, it was about their friendship with each other and the high evolutionary just happened to be there to shake things up
@@frenchbloo very true Ronan is easily one of the least interesting villains in the MCU. But the reason everyone loves the first film is that the introduction of the characters and their personalities were perfect, quite literally the perfect way to introduce a random set of previously unknown characters into a franchise that people only really initially wanted to see the Avengers.
This was the first movie to make me cry. And one of the very few pieces of media to do it also. For that, it is probably going to be my favourite movie for a long time. My only complaint would be that Adam felt a bit sidelined, but he still fit in fine.
100% this film came at me and I wasn't ready for it. ( the rabbit will haunt me)... there's a few things that don't add up but nothing worth mentioning... only thing that took me out of the movie was the shit animal costumes...
I loved this movie, everything was tied together really nice. James Gunn understands humor is about timing and one of his strengths is surprising you with a joke. Like with the kid throwing the ball scene or the way they get past the security guard by making him fall in love with Drax, you never know what's going to happen he surprises you every turn. He let's the humor ride on the strength of his characters and he makes the world seem fun not dire (he even lets people react to The funniness in the movie.) But at the same time characters lives are treated very importantly that's the whole driving force for 75 % of the movie. He keeps his characters consistent to what they would do he lets his characters act accordingly. Also The Suicide Squad is a perfect example of balancing absurd humor with serious moments (when peacemaker kills rick flag) but I've gone off track. My main point is James Gunn does not destroy his characters by making them funny his characters are funny because they are so consistent Drax is stupid, Rocket is crazy Mantis is sweet and whimsical, Gamora and Nebula are tortured and robotic but also kind, Groot says he's Groot, and StarLord is the aging leader with baggage. How they interact is consistent and that makes them funny and likable. Star-Lord doesn't even want to visit his Grandpa at first but Mantis tells him it's his obligation and that's another funny scene. This movie is so fucking good. For me the first one is better only by a little and I really like 2 but I do think that 3 is better than 2 if not the best. 10/10
For general thoughts, the movie had a bit trouble with its pacing maybe need to pause some moments, and Adam sure was sidelined, he was set up way early but with the current state, Gunn had himself to make changes before leaving for full time with DC. But oh boy it’s a great film, the Evolutionary was a good villain, in the level love to hate this character (from what I’ve heard in the comics and like the movie he’s wicked up scientist of evolution, and had tie in with an X-Men villain) and the team has a good send off. I found more appreciation for them by the team who makes the Guardians films, like how Gunn plays the songs for the actors to play out the scenes, Easter eggs that got us geeks a bit of dopamine like the YT channel New Rockstars got noticed and only had like 70%ish from their breakdown (check it out for interest for Easter eggs and breakdowns), and how Rocket is the secret protagonists of all three as much as Star-lord and the rest of the team
@@LunrFox that’s exactly how I felt! I think just because I have such a soft spot for animals, and Rocket being my favourite character, I just couldn’t keep it in. I’m not ashamed to say I had to take my glasses off because they were full of my tears
Damn, the movie was just incredible from start to finish. The movie handled everything so well, and gave the Guardians the ending they deserved. As an animal lover, I cried seeing Rocket's backstory, and the moment when all the animals from the ship were rescued felt genuinely rewarding. 10/10, and one of my favourite marvel movies of all time ❤
This movie was GODLY amazing, in my opinion of course, and I will agree, Adam Warlock SHOULD’VE been the main villain, as that’s how it feels like when he was teased in the 2nd film, BUT I am still very satisfied with how this film turned out! Rocket as a character is just SUCH a champ!
I already posted my thoughts on EFAP's covering on it, but I'll post it here. I really enjoyed the Rocket scenes (from his flashbacks to his life with his old friends, to their brutal deaths, to his near-death experience and him coming back to life with his friends all around him). Rocket's scenes was what stole the show. Those were obviously the best parts of the movie, they probably should have been their own film. And Peter Quill's reaction to Rocket flat-lining had great acting from Chris Pratt, and I loved when they all group-hugged Rocket when he came back. The rescue scene with the raccoons, and Rocket finally accepting his raccoon identity was well-done. A lot of the Rocket scenes actually brought tears to my eyes, honestly. I also liked that we had an actual antagonist that wasn't misunderstood or sympathetic. Personally, I thought his death was fine, as he had already gotten impaled and was going to bleed out on his dying ship, anyway... I do think it would have been far more satisfying if Rocket HAD killed him, though, and I do feel like the Guardians' brutal beatdown of him was a little too easy. I also wish Rocket hadn't been in a coma for the majority of the movie. I just don't buy that he's supposed to be the main character all this time when the first two movies had been about Quill and Rocket was sidelined in this one for most of the time. I quite liked Cosmo, as she reminded me of Dug from Up, and I did kinda like Drax and Mantis's friendship and how he became a dad, and I enjoyed Peter's reunion with his father. I also liked the musical score by John Murphy, particularly during the aforementioned Rocket scenes and the High Evolutionary's theme. I also loved the inclusion of the song "Dog Days Are Over" by Florence + The Machine, since its one of my favorite songs, though I initially thought it was going to play at the end credits. For the rest of the film outside the Rocket stuff...? Yeah, it's pretty weak, unfortunately. I did not like AU/Pre-character-development Gamora at all. I thought she was just unpleasant throughout most of the film, especially during the scene where they were trying to get Rocket's file. I would have liked it if Rocket had been the one to remove the HE's mask. I already went in knowing it was a mixed bag, so I wouldn't be too surprised or anything. I had already spoiled myself before watching it, because I wasn't sure if I was going to see it, and even then I was kinda disappointed to hear that Rocket didn't get enough protagonism, until the final act. I didn't really laugh at a lot of the jokes, and I did feel like they used too many pop songs. There were times where the film would pick a song during a scene I thought would be more appropriate to use the music score of John Murphy. The one where they were facing off against the Hellspawns in the hallway, in particular, I was afraid I was going to either get a massive headache or go deaf from all the loud noises and the song they picked. XD I told myself it was a "good" finale at first, but after thinking about it a bit more later, I wouldn't really go as far as to say its good finale. It's definitely not a masterpiece. Because saying something is good is implying that something is near-perfect or without flaws. Nothing is without flaws, obviously. But aside from the Rocket story arc, it is weak, probably weaker than 2. For me, Guardians 3 is one of those kinds of films where you may not want to watch again, but instead you find yourself re-watching specific scenes you liked, rather than the whole film. Hell, I've already re-watched the Rocket clips from the 3rd film over and over again, just because they stole the show for me. From the scene where he flat-lines and comes back, the scenes with him and Lylla and Teefs and Floor naming each other, the scene where he rescues the baby raccoons, etc... The CGI and the animation on the animals were great, as the characters look realistic but at the same time they haven't lost their ability to emote, unlike the CGI animals in Disney's "live-action" remakes. It's one of those movies where you end up only re-watching the scenes you felt were the highlights! XD Maybe if this film had been developed right after the 2nd movie and before the Thanos arc/The Snappening, most of the writing could have been better. Maybe if it hadn't stayed stuck in development-hell for so long... Maybe it could have been way better than it ultimately was. I know I would have found Gamora WAY MORE bearable if it had taken place before the Snappening, and she and Peter would have actually gotten together in the end, that's for sure.
I loved Guardians 1, was a little underwhelmed by Guardians 2, and haven't seen Guardians 3, but am interested in doing so. After Endgame, I have not seen any MCU films or series and rely on reviews to tell me the truth. However, Guardians Vol. 3 is about the only movie besides Spiderman: No Way Home that I genuinely want to see some day.
the villian is the High Evoutionary. He's been a reacurring villain/antagonist...good motivations, repeatedly crappy execution. naturally, another Blackwashed character.
Agree with your assessment nearly 100%... surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did honestly. Emotionally VISCERAL... Rocket's story was gut-wrenching! Pratt was awesome, Groot was badass and MANTIS..😁! My goodness I absolutely loved MANTIS in this...pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this flick!
It's interesting because I don't fit into either category of "people who absolutely loved it" and "people who absolutely hated it". For me it's a 7/10 movie. The good outweighted the bad,but I just felt like the pacing was so fast I didn't even have time to process what was going on. I couldn't even fully get emotional because everything was moving so fast and after every short sad scene there was comedy right after. I also felt like outside of Rocket, the other characters didn't really have much of an arc and this whole story was just about him. I think I would've loved everything a lot more if it was 2 movies instead of one, and we had more time for character development. As you can see for my pfp,I'm a big Peter Quill fan(he's my 2nd fav mcu character after Steve Rogers) and I felt like he didn't have any character development this time around, and all his problems are treated as a joke in the movie,as well as everyone else's that isn't Rocket. That being said,I did enjoy it,I thought some of the jokes were hilarious, the CGI and action was really good this time around, and if you compare it to most other MCU projects lately,it's like a freaking masterpiece by comparison. Also Rocket was definetly well developed in this movie.
I would say Peter's development includes: - accepting that the new Gamora is not the same person as the old Gamora - facing his past and visiting his grandfather
Don't get me wrong. There are some cases where you can legitimately hate everything about a movie and those are the ones we make fun of. And there are cases where you can like everything about a movie. But I think most movies do have that nuance. I think it just comes down to people's experience. I'm all for people hating and experience because if the cons outweigh the pros of something, that will destroy the entirety of their experience. However, if there are still pros, no matter how small they may be, people should be honest about that and their rating. I completely agree that If someone gives a movie a zero out of ten, they should not express any positivity whatsoever. Giving a movie such a low score contradicts any positive comments made in the review; and the person did commence their review with saying that there was something positive. I am curious to know why The viewer sees guardians of the galaxy vol 3 as better than everything in phase 4 or phase 5
MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy is literally the perfect definition of going from 0 to 100. Everyone was complaining about how it’s too silly and nobody takes it seriously then they drop this third movie that is literally depression fuel. Disney just can’t find a balance like I have no idea what to say! 💀💀
I liked the movie, it fits with the previous 2 movies. The only thing that didn't work was Adam Warlock who got the Thor treatment. I hope if Adam ever touches a soul stone, which is what he's supposed to be associated with, it changes his personality.
I agree with your feeling for the movie. I found it to be surprisingly emotional. Almost out of place for the modern MCU movies. It was well written and enjoyable. It just seemed that Phase 4 tried too hard to remain relavent, where this movie showed a true well written and created movie. Lets hope Phase 5 remains the same. TY
Adam Warlock was good. Let me explain. Adam Warlock was an unnecessary appendage to this movie that seemed almost obligatory to include. Warlock was a Chekov’s Gun set up in a end credits scene. Like Fiege or whoever said that the character is cool and we want to use him at some point maybe, so set him up. This movie is Gunn tying things up in a bow, so if he had just “forgotten” about that set up then it would be incomplete and people would ask what about Warlock. To his credit, Gunn does more than he needs with Warlock. He is the inciting incident. He has motivation and backstory that are presented and actually do tie into the main plot. He has a character arc. He is always hovering around the periphery and only inserting at specific times. I could see Warlock’s “save the cat” moment coming from a mile away and it was as predictable as could be. But my point is that Gunn chose to include Warlock, a character that was very much shoehorned, in a way that actually felt planned and did integrate him into the movie. Would the movie have been nearly identical and just as good without Warlock? Yes. But Gunn got some serious mileage off an extra loose end.
Not gonna lie, the scenes with Rocket, Lylla, Teefs, and Floor made me cry. Also, Korg talking about Asgard being a haven for all peoples of the universe always annoyed me, because who the hell is he to decide that? Thats not his home, it was the Asgardians home, they get to decide who does and does not live there. Also, Alteroir, im British myself, and I love your fake British accent. :D
I’ve heard people (mostly parents) complain about the movie being too dark. Like the universe revolves around their kids and whether or not they can watch a movie. Like dude, seriously. If you don’t like something, you don’t have to watch it. Don’t complain about it not being for everyone. Also the villain’s name is The Evolutionary.
small spoilers. seeing rocket have his moment with all the other baby racoons and then when they all clobbered over him was the cutest shit ive ever seen in a mcu movie. Like top 10 scene right there
Vol 3 was a really enjoyable film and good ending to the trilogy. Nice to see a darker, more serious tone. I also suspect this movie is the last dying gasp of the old, good MCU.
I've just seen the movie and I quite liked it. Modern Marvel movies have a bit of a problem with too much bathos, basically undermining narrative or emotional tension by no-selling them for a quick laugh, which weakens the plot by taking away all impact those scenes could have. This movie did have one or two scenes where bathos was used for comedic effect too, but it respected its important and heavy hitting scenes. It didn't pull its punches. If a scene asked to be emotional, it got to tug at those heartstrings. Maybe less so with the action scenes, but those were mostly meant to be fun anyway. Aside from one particular serious one which was done expertly. I was fully invested in Rocket's backstory and equally hated and loved the villain. Exactly the feeling a good villain should evoke. A well written antagonist we love to hate. For all his great villainy, how he gets defeated was a bit of a letdown. Sure, not every movie needs a big final showdown, but one last stand against a fearsome foe is fun and would have made for great closure for the Evolutionary's and Rocket's story. Maybe Adam Warlock could have played a part in that, his character arc was a bit lackluster and he did get a good reason to fight the High Evolutionary after all. The stakes were also tangible. It wasn't about some hard to grasp thing like saving the world, in fact, they even fail to save a world, it was about saving a friend. A much more personal conflict. And nevertheless, they do end up doing a large scale heroic rescue in the end.
Yeah, don't know how people can hate this movie, it was amazing seeing Rocket's backstory, and tragic. Like when what happens happens, it just hits how Rocket is now alone and for the Evelutionary to mock Rocket in that moment, one wishes Rocket would have finished the job right then and there. And then for Rocket to see Lylla again, one really feels it like "Wow, if I were at the gates of Heaven right now, I think I'd walk in, not looking back at the people I'd be leaving behind." Like yeah, it really pulls on the heartstrings; Rocket's whole story there.
Thanks for the review! I was going to pass on this movie because if the Disney Marvel garbage that has come out since End Game. I didn't want to ruin my love for that guardians if it was a dumpster fire, but you've convinced me to watch it. I'm excited now!
Oh god, it was about time someone had an actual good take about this movie. All the negativity surrounding it its honestly so tiresome. You have UA-cam reviewers either saying that its terrible and completely undermining it as if it was "the worst in the trilogy" (when in reality its quite the opposite), and then you have others saying that it is just "fine" and "forgettable" as if they were afraid to admit that, for once, a MARVEL movie was actually pretty darn good. Nah... To hell with that, it was actively EXCELLENT. Some truly amazing stuff. A lot of the points some of they say are absolutely valid, but even taking those points in consideration, the movie still holds up extremely well. It always felt to me that, alongside maybe the Daredevil show and the first Iron Man movie, the GOTG movies are the only ones in MARVEL that actually have heart to them. (Ignoring any Spiderman product ofc, since those come from Sony). Its kind of disappointing to see the lame reception this one is getting solely because people don't like anything Disney related. But it makes sense I guess. 😮💨 P.S: Yeah... Now that you mention it, James Gunn DOES look a little bit like Colonel Sanders!
I'm a huge, HUGE comic book nerd and this movie was absolutely great, not dipping an inch in quality from the previous two Guardians of the Galaxy movies. MCU is NOT the comic book universe, so much has been different from the start that these stories really can't take place anywhere else than in an alternate universe. So I'm not too much bothered about High Evolutionary being an alien from another planet and his actor being a black man, other than this one race swap the movie kept modern politics out of it. This movie made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me genuinely care about the characters just like the previous two GotG. And I fully know how loosely these movies are based on the comic books, I just recently re-read Dan Abnett's 2008-2010 series from which the movies drew some of their inspiration from. And I've read a lot of the original Guardians of the Galaxy comics too, where Stan Lee was the co-creator. It was nice that they added some of those characters as easter eggs into this movie as well. 😊
I love this movie and the music was good. The ending, it was beautifully done. I was with you about the injuries. Hearing the sound effects for a majority of them, they made me shudder or rub my neck. I love animals as well and, the amount of character they put into them was amazing. I won't say anything more out of fear of saying a spoiler.
This movie felt like James Gunn reminding Marvel of why they were ever successful in the first place. I mean talk about going back to your roots. The character development, worldbuilding, and simple yet layered plot and pacing were done so well that it felt like watching End Game but without the awkward “fat Thor” parts. That is what Marvel did best, giving us character we can actually care about even with their fantastical powers. James Gunn reminded us why we could accept and care about a raccoon and talking tree in the first place. My only gripe was the unnecessary and unexplained change to Nebula’s appearance and some underutilization of Adam Warlock. But the great things far outweigh the bad in my opinion.
You have quickly become my favorite movie critic on UA-cam.. when I saw the title after watching it a few days ago I waited to watch this and wow you said everything I felt about this movie❤️👌🏼I loved it!
It was a pretty good movie but I get the gray area because Marvel has been nothing but a decaying wreck these last years so I don’t expect anything all that good much less great. So it was a genuine treat to enjoy and like for the last movie i have any interest to se of the MCU.
I give this 7-8/10. I liked the movie, mostly due to the junk the MCU has done in Phases 4/5. Plus, I love Guardians (most). Also, I love Star-Lord. If this movie came out at start of Phase 4, it would be way better received and would cruise to $1B. I would not mind seen Pratt’s Quill character in solo movie or series. Very stunned that popped on screen post credits. Feels like they’re getting rid of any strong OG/male type characters. Might just be me though. There was tons of action. I liked the darker type tone. Get rid of the comedic relief as much as Marvel is doing. When watching superhero movies, we want serious stakes. Not stuff like Ms. Marvel. No thank you. High Evolutionary was fairly good villain, but would’ve liked more of his backstory. Rocket had me tearing up. There’s a lot going on and if Gunn wasn’t leaving, this movie would be little different. At least, the VFX was solid. Opposed to MOM, Quantumania, etc.
I must see this movie in cinema. I didn't see the second one in the cinema and it seems like Guardians 3 are as solid movie as previous ones were even if it's going to be more filled with the feels.
People are only saying this one is the worst because the tone and subject matter, specifically the animal abuse and torture can be very difficult to watch. but it's important to the story and isn't there just for shock value
This was the first Marvel movie in a long time where I didn't roll my eyes at some point. Also, I go to the movies pretty much every week and the past few months I've watched long movies (2,5+ hours) and this was also the first in a while where I didn't start to feel sleepy halfway through. It kept me invested all the way to the end. It might not be a perfect movie, but I am not a critic, I am just a regular movie watcher who wants to shut my brain off and this was a great movie for me!
Thanks! A very different perspective from the reviews I’d seen so far. I might reconsider going to see it (haven’t watched a Marvel movie, or anything else made by Disney, in years)!
Nebula is a whole emo chick though, and Gamora was basically a fresh face. Remember, she's one of the children of Thanos so she's supposed to be this fierce warrior. Also understandable that she wouldn't fall in love again with Quill but acknowledges that they were prolly a great couple after what she's seen of him.
@@XiaoyuuuYT Dude, look at them both in GotG 1 and compare how they look like now in GotG 3. Everything you said applies to both movies - but in the first they look like _women,_ not androgynous as in this one.
Its guardians, it would be pretty hard to mess them up even though Disney has tried to basically make all their movies space adventures that are jokes all the time. 1 and 2 were great and amongst them 3 could probably be the best thing since End game because everything Disney has made has been terrible.
I’ve never cried in a movie theatre in my memory before this film, and making me laugh so hard 10 minutes after sobbing into my own hands is a huge achievement. It was beautifully written, and even if certain characters were under-utilised, I was more than satisfied having the focus on the horrifying backstory
i really happy to hear you liked because some of the reviews have worried me as someone who loves tgotg and wants to see a good send off for them ( will finish vid later to avoid spoilers )
I just saw it today, and I really enjoyed it. I personally thought Gamora was too much of a jerk, however, but that was really the only major gripe I had with it. I do think she could've been less of a jerk, but I honestly don't remember how she was in the previous films so I might need to rewatch... Anyway, I loved the scenes with Rocket and his experiment friends. I wish that could've been its own movie. I am also amazed at how emotional it made me. I almost cried three times! I have never had that experience at a Marvel movie of all things. Top notch!
I found the music very distracting in this one. Previous, especially the first, it had an actual developed arch in it. However I’m this one, it never seemed to sync with any of scenes. Ambient music would have far more fitting as they only used what seemed like no more then 10 sec of play and must less many of the time.
I just saw this today. It is certainly one of the best we've gotten from Marvel in some time, and I had to choke back tears a LOT, especially with some of the darker moments in Rockets backstory. But I have to agree on the music. I love the song choices but the way they were edited in just felt a bit off as if they were trying to shoehorn in a lot of nostalgically popular songs for the sake of just doing so. But outside of that this was a very solid film. I think what gets some people particularly upset is that this was definitely the darkest of the three and the humor was sparser and unable to balance with the harder hitting moments.
I actually disagree. I think the music in this was well placed, if not, maybe even better placed than the first two films. Which is saying a lot, I know. But for example, in the first scene with Rocket, creep by Radiohead is playing. Which is about a guy thinking basically hating himself and thinking he’s not worthy of this girl he thinks is perfect. As this song plays, all we see is rocket, hinting at his arc for the rest of the film of thinking he’s just a “Stupid Experiment.” Second time I really liked was when they played do you realize with Star Lord. The song is about a guy sort of mournfully swooning over a girl he’s in love with. Same for Star Lord, who wants gamora back but doesn’t know how. It’s him venting through the song, and I feel it adds weight to the scene. My favourite time is when they play: Always Chasing Rainbows, as the characters drive through the animal society. If not only fits with them seeing the homeless lady and the drug dealer, but as soon as the scene ends, it cuts to the high evolutionary watching the girl on the spinning wheel. The villain, who’s always chasing perfection. Or, rainbows, if you will. So those were my thoughts, and I feel like the clever placements enhances the narrative even more.
@@danielstevens8610 Its hard to explain why I found it 'off' but I'll try. It wasn't the song choices or when they were playing, really. It was just how things led into them that felt too abrupt. There was little to no 'lead in' that made them feel less connected if that makes any sense. I guess the best example would be you hear the song suddenly playing and after a bit you see Starlord is actually listening to it on his headphones and the song mutes when he takes them off. If they'd done it in reverse where you see him put on the headphones and the song starts playing it would act as a lead in. There was a bit of a disjoint between whether or not it was a song accompanying the movie, or if it were narratively actually being played.
I have to say that I'm very happy they got James Gunn back. He really is one of the greats in this genre who is still there to make films. Everything in this film that works is from him. Let the man work!!
Saw it yesterday, totally fun and engaging, the soundtrack, the score, the acting, the plot, the directing, the whole package, the only thing troubling about Vol 3 was this review,
Most my favorite reviewers gave GOTG3 mixed reviews except one, who was glowing. I loved it especially as an epilogue to Endgame and the Infinity Saga. Not to say it's perfect, (there's plenty to nitpick) but I think this film will age very well and most of the naysayers will ultimately come around.
19:15 nope, James Gunn is Dead on Arrival for DC. For a number of reasons. First and foremost, James Gunn’s writing style only benefits from writing about non-traditional heroes, he does NOT do traditional heroes (I.e, Superman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, etc. all of these characters embody transitional heroic qualities of which James Gunn is NOT known for writing about). The movies/shows James Gunn has written for so have have all been about outsiders/misfits/anti-heroes/villains (e.g., Guardians of the Galaxy, Suicide Squad, Peacekeeper, Brightburn, etc.). He’s already identified the comic lines for DC that have inspired where he intends to take the DCEU and none of them are traditional, nor super heroic. Your basis for judging his writing quality is not very sound; Guardians of the Galaxy may be a good movie franchise, but it is a good Superhero movie franchise? Superman is not Guardians of the Galaxy, apples to oranges comparison. Next, in the midst of the actual story-telling competency, James Gunn made the decision to axe the likes of Henry Cavill for Superman, and keep Ezra Miller (the self-proclaimed “mad-goose wizard” and man who has been charged on numerous instances for the very vile things he’s done in recent years), yet the question is being asked if it’s actually worth keeping him around for more films after this next Flash film. So, Gunn thinks it’s a good idea to can Cavill, one of the actual great things about modern DC, but keep Miller, possibly the MOST toxic things (aside from Amber Heard) about DC today for the immediate future, with the potential to keep him on longer. This makes ZERO sense. And it has already angered a lot of people. So no, a decently written Guardians of the Galaxy franchise is not NEARLY enough to show Gunn is the guy to man the helm at DC, it just shows he was good to run Guardians of the Galaxy. He has proven time and again where his strengths and interests in writing are, it is NOT at DC where the expectations for storytelling are DIFFERENT.
Aren't we tired of traditional super hero movies? I know I am. I've seen them do the same thing over and over. It's predictable and boring. I much prefer a unique take that shows me something different, BUT at the same time delivering an engaging story. I look forward to what Gunn will do
@@christographerx64 The excuse of doing something unique is exactly how we get "woke" Star Wars, gutted Star Trek, gender swapped Doctor Who, the MSheU as a whole, dithering Rings of Power, and countless other franchises with established lore and fans sacrificed in the name of doing something new. How is that working out for us? Moreover, Zack Snyder already tried going in a different direction with the DC stories in his films, making it darker and edgier. Look at Man of Steel alone, you have a much more grounded, realistic, and violent Superman film. Fans of the OG comics and longstanding franchise HATED it, they hated how Superman killed Zod at the end of the film and how Superman was brooding throughout the film (they loved Cavill as a pick for Clark, as he LOOKS like Superman, the writing and the story are a different thing altogether). Ironically, we're tied of these writers and filmmakers making NONTRADITIONAL Superhero films. It's predictable and boring. I can probably count on my hand the number of films in the past couple of decades where the writer/director was invested in staying true to the source material, doing right by the characters, and not plugging in unique takes, WHILE STILL delivering an engaging, story driven film that did amazingly well, and I have to go outside the superhero genre to do it (e.g., Peter Jackson's LoTR trilogy, Denis Villeneuve's Dune, Del Torro's Hellboy, Cameron's Alita: Battle Angel, etc.) This argument of wanting something different from "the same thing" we've gotten "over and over" doesn't make sense because we haven't gotten a "traditional super hero movie" in YEARS. Marvel certainly hasn't done it. DC is different though when it comes to the property (not the films, the property). They already tried to do things differently and it didn't work out well. Franchises come with an established fan base. When you build into that fan base there IS an expectation that the franchise will resemble what the fans expect from it. Too much deviation, and you alienate the very people who built up the franchise (at which point, it becomes a question as to why you even bothered to invest in the franchise at all, you have to give the people who made this franchise something what they're expecting). Gunn will butcher many of the characters in the DC franchise because he doesn't know how/doesn't care to handle characters of this particular genre/archetype (DC heroes aren't the same as Marvel, they are grander, larger than life, Gods living among men). The fanbase of this franchise will also not respond well to it. If Superman does not resemble Superman, they will not support it.
@greyknight627 thats hyperbole. We got current star wars from bad writing and no plan and passing a specific agenda I dont believe in "woke" as its an indiscriminate term that people use to fight diversity. But diversity shouldn't be the story (of which it is in star wars) but integrated into it.
@greyknight627 I find it ironic that you say doing something unique is what made stsr wars sequel trilogy bad when it was that same unique take that created Stars in the first place. Giving these kids from USC film school the opportunity to do something unique different. Doing something unique doesn't make something bad. Not having a plan or good script does. And that's what actually happened to Star Wars. Your insinuation that having diversity in a film equals failure is nonsense and illogical
I loved this movie! Everyone was excellent! They should've cast Chukwudi Iwuji as Kang!! He was compelling and dynamic as the High Evolutionary! I also think Will Poulter's Adam Warlock, while mostly a side character, was an improvement over the version from the comics. Lyla, Teefs, and Floors had me in tears and that isn't easy to do.
Not only do I agree with your take on Guardians 3, and I really didn't enjoy the second movie, but I thought this one was pretty damn good for the finale.. but I've been calling James Gunn "Colonel Sanders" on the live streams for a few months now, and to know I'm not the only one that sees it.. to know that a great mind like yours can see it.. that's #validation 😎
Hello Alteori. I only saw bits of pieces of the previous movies, I like them. Haven't seen three, might give it a try. Anyway, another great video, Alteori, I like it, see you in the next one.
This verison Gamora I dont like how they handled her. She's not from a different timeline but from the past. I didn't get why she didn't returned to the past like how they return the infinite stones. Plus they made her completely different and very aggressive like Garmora was from a different universe but she isnt. It felt like they didnt want to pair her again with starlord. So I dont really buy it.
I think the general consensus for this movie will be that Rocket's backstory was good, but the rest of the movie was mid, and then years later it will be remembered as the worst in the GOTG trilogy.
Exactly how I feel. I think the people saying that it was great or a masterpiece were emotionally manipulated by the Rocket backstory. This movie was very mid. It was pretty par for the course for post-Endgame MCU.
Exactly the case with Squid Game. It was just a Hunger Games x Saw lovechild but people put it on a pedestal cause it made them cry (almost always the case in most Korean media) 😂 Same with HBO's The Last Of Us.
@@googleislame I just get Dark Knight Rises vibes from the movie. Remember when people were calling that movie a masterpiece? Like, I remember people saying that the only reason people liked The Dark Knight more was because of Joker, but saying that Bane was a better written villain and the twist at the end was incredible. But, nowadays, the movie is kinda seen as 'The movie where Nolan phoned it in,' where it was clear that he was moving on from making that kind of movie and didn't care about it nearly as much as his other movies. Though, I do think that Gunn leading the new DCEU is a mistake. He's well-liked and his movies are hyped up, but, like, The Suicide Squad was hyped up a lot due to his involvement and it had a pretty low box office for the hype it got. So, is that what we're gonna get from him? A bunch of The Suicide Squad movies that people seem to like which don't do great at the box office? Kinda seems like the James Gunn approach, right now, is better used on streaming services instead of superhero movies in theaters. Feels like this decade will probably be dominated by Nintendo movies while superhero movies will become more niche.
@@ashblossomandjoyoussprung.9917 Yeah I have very little confidence in Gunn's Superman movie. My guess is that his Superman movie will be a version of the Born Yesterday trope, which is sort of how Adam Warlock was in Vol 3 - he was naive, childlike, and easily manipulated. The key to getting Superman right is understamding that he is essentially a Red State superhero. Superman is who he is because of how he was raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent in Smallville. He is a fish out of water in Metropolis. Richard Donner understood that.
I honestly would have prefered if we had flashbacks from each of the Guardians. What did Gamora and Nebula go through while being raised by Thanos? How did Drax's wife and child die? How did Rocket meet Groot? How was Peter's time with Yondu? I just think it was a little unfair with seeing only Rocket's backstory.
This had to be my best mcu film but I wish and hope lylla, teefs and floor to return in future mcu films if that then guiding rocket and his new squad along the way or make them reborn in this world again, it is the multivers after all even when kangs return is around the corner
This was one of the very few Modern Marvel Movies that I genuinely enjoyed with my family when we went to watch it at the theatres... I appreciated that it was still quite funny, but the serious moments were treated with more respect and the villain was not a sympathetic one for once (I especially appreciated that bit for more reasons than one...). It being about Saving Rocket, his backstory and about being united during the crazy circumstances as well as maintaining your moral compass, even when revenge could very easily have been achieved and most people would've justified you getting it, is what I miss from super hero movies... Hopefully the story of Quill and the gang won't be continued as a side story in some other marvel movie or show cause that would kinda suck, I was already fairly lost in the beginning of the movie with the setting considering I had not seen a lot of the previous Marvel movies leading up to it...
I just got back from watching it with my brother. It was very bittersweet, I liked this film in many aspects, but it also shook me. Like I'm feeling deeply troubled after having seen this movie and I don't know why. I found myself angry at my brother cracking jokes. Over a movie. What is wrong with me?
Hope I enjoy it as much as the other two. Also, just watched the first episode of Genndy Tartakovsky's new series the other night. It was interesting. The style is like Primal combined with old-fashioned animation. What's really exciting is that he's doing a magic/steampunk story.
Adam warlock was wasted in this movie
Big surprise. I was curious to see what they would do with that teaser at the end of guardians 2 (easily the best one)
Obviously, of course Disney would waste Warlock. They like to waste a lot of characters
Yeah, They should have use him in endgame
WHO IS HE? 🤣
Yeah, I agree.
Shit that is both deep and fucked up.
Anyone who has been with Rocket Racoon would do the same to him, you can't blame the villain.
The actor playing the villain destroyed that role, I’ve never felt so good seeing a character in a movie hurt.
I also hope he gets more work after this, getting the audience to hate a character is much harder than getting them to love one!!! Incredible performance
He was one of the leads in the Peacemaker tv series. Yep. He's a really good actor.
He was far better than the guy playing Kang.
Eyebrows plays all his roles exceptionally
I thought he was great, really intimidating & commanding presence too
To me he looked like a crybaby all the time screaming, not commanding any authority lol.
Same
Same here!!
Ditto
Uh-huh!!
As someone who is obsessed with raccoons and everything about them, this movie hit me on the deepest levels with Rocket's entire arc.
The High Evolutionary immediately went to the top of my villain shit-list...
The way he fucked with them animals.... 110% worse than thanos... what a prick
As someone who IS a raccoon, this movie also hit me pretty hard
Oh shit the high evolutionary is the villain!! Damn!!
Edit: I say this bc I haven’t seen the high evolutionary for decades. Like since 2005
Dude, I'm in the same boat... But with Otters... This movie hit me a little differently.
@@KingofBeasts444 I'll bet... 😞
Been waiting for a darker, more serious take on the Guardians of the Galaxy because the comic is deep in tone quite often. Its decades old and has a lot of prestige and doesnt deserve to be reduced into mere genre fare. This is good stuff.
The comics are far superior for sure.. sad.. though we got pretty lucky really..
I love how Alteori delivers her review like she's talking to one of her friends.
Yes. That's exactly what I aim for 😄
@@Alteori also I felt bad for Rocket the Raccoon
Oh Floor...why you had to make me cry, Gunn? This movie is probably the first MCU movie that made me cried watching it. Rocket's backstory is so depressing.
No really, my heart broke into a million tiny pieces
It broke me, I was not ready for this movie. There's a few problems but what I'm really upset is * spoilers ........*
That when rocket sees his friends in the afterlife. Why are they in there deformed image . Why aren't they as they where before they got experimented on
@@MrSolobear333 SPOILERS:
I don’t think any of them can even remember what they looked or felt like before being experimented on. But, to properly answer your question, they’re all their true selves after they became friends and named themselves

Korg had like 3 genuinely funny moments in his entire existence as a character. Every other time he was the worst thing in the scene.
agreed, his first scene was good, but he should have stayed as a character who we saw maybe 3 times, but because Taika has be in his own films he had to be a constantly reoccurring character who is just there to make jokes.
@@jacksoneee6759
Only one director has ever been good at inserting himself into his movies: Alfred Hitchcock.
The thing people need to realize is that the Gaudian of the Galaxy, can be what ever it want to be, it can be as entertaining as the Joker, it can be as Dark as Batman, it can also be as Screws Up as Jason-Todd, and no matter how the story is executed, it will always be perfect!.. The best way I can describe this movie is a big ass middle finger to modern Marvel. I feel like Gunn saw where it was headed after phase 4 and said, how can we flip this formula on its head.
James Gunn is not perfect. And pretty much the hypocrisy of Marvel and Hollywood in general.
I just thank God they put more effort into this script than they ever did to ant man
@@ManyPeregrine81 no one is perfect, and I think the hypocrisy comes more from the execs than the writers and directors
Just wish Adam had been better utilized.
I always loved Rocket's and Lylla's love story I am happy they brought her into the story at last ❤
Mom passed away from brain cancer when I was a kid so the opening scene for GotG 1 hit hard.
Don't forget Winter Soldier!
@@MrSolobear333 yeah, those costumes were off putting but didn’t bother me too much.
And yes, the Rabbit will haunt me too.
I just got back from the cinema, I loved this film too. Felt so many emotions, it was an experience 😊
This film was the only Marvel movie and one of the only pieces of media to make me cry.
Same here
Same.
There are very few pieces of media that I have cried over, and most of them are video games. Never thought I'd cry over a Marvel movie.
XD
I told myself it was a "good" finale at first, but after thinking about it a bit more later, I wouldn't really go as far as to say its good finale.
XD
Maybe if this film had been developed right after the 2nd movie and before the Thanos arc/The Snappening, most of the writing could have been better. Maybe if it hadn't stayed stuck in development-hell for so long... Maybe it could have been way better than it ultimately was. I know I would have found Gamora WAY MORE bearable if it had taken place before the Snappening, and she and Peter would have actually gotten together in the end, that's for sure.
I haven’t watched it yet but the guardians are my favourite MCU movies and I can’t wait!
I highly recommend mate. I think even the so called anti wokeness people are now just complaining too much
dude u totally should it was so good i just seen it last night
Glad you enjoyed it Alteori. Think I'll check it out.
the villian is the High Evoutionary. He's been a reacurring villain/antagonist...good motivations, repeatedly crappy execution. naturally, another Blackwashed character.
Rocket’s Origin Story is 10x more powerful and emotional than most MCU characters’
I would say Peter's development includes:
- accepting that the new Gamora is not the same person as the old Gamora
- facing his past and visiting his grandfather
I saw this last night... I 100% agree with everything you said. I love your reviews.
Thanks John!

This is how people rate these days. The most binary thinking ever.
You LOVE IT or you HATE IT and nothing inbetween. Zero nuance :/
I laughed, I cried, I laughed again, then I cried again, then I laughed again.
This was a real roller coaster
Me too
In my opinion is good
Really good.
But it will Be the Last decent movie we Will have in a while
MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy is literally the perfect definition of going from 0 to 100.
Captain Marvel’s Origin: “I fell off a bike and got back up now I’m a strong superhero woman!” 💪
*A freaking Raccoon’s Origin:*
The guy who played the villain in this was also in the peacemaker miniseries also created by James Gunn
Loved the movie. Getting to see a young optimistic Rocket was a cool thing and it was heartbreaking to find out why he's so cynical Now.
I thought it was incredible. Best Guardians yet. I cant even look at rocket without tearing up a little.
Yeah completely agreed, just reading some of these comments and being reminded of what I saw is making me emotional again
Drax was SLIGHTLY funnier than Mantis but they're still cringe. Rocket's backstory is obviously the main highlight of this movie.
P.S: Yeah...
3:16 finally somebody brought this Up but people give Love and Thunder crap
It's so good though.
Not perfect but imo I think one of the best superhero movies in general.
I agree with your assessment!
Only thing I don't like about the characters is how they de-feminized and/or masculinized all the women. Why?
Nebula is a whole emo chick though, and Gamora was basically a fresh face. Remember, she's one of the children of Thanos so she's supposed to be this fierce warrior. Also understandable that she wouldn't fall in love again with Quill but acknowledges that they were prolly a great couple after what she's seen of him.
@@XiaoyuuuYT Dude, look at them both in GotG 1 and compare how they look like now in GotG 3. Everything you said applies to both movies - but in the first they look like _women,_ not androgynous as in this one.
It's a mix nebula is very butch but mantis is very feminine.
Its guardians, it would be pretty hard to mess them up even though Disney has tried to basically make all their movies space adventures that are jokes all the time. 1 and 2 were great and amongst them 3 could probably be the best thing since End game because everything Disney has made has been terrible.
I totally agree 100% with what you said here.
As this song plays, all we see is rocket, hinting at his arc for the rest of the film of thinking he’s just a “Stupid Experiment.”
Second time I really liked was when they played do you realize with Star Lord.
@@Dilligff I never really got that feeling and thought they disconnected very well. But to each their own.

I have💯👍 read a lot of reviews mostly the same but with different conclusions on whether the movie is good or bad sometimes
Agree 💯 %!
I can probably count on my hand the number of films in the past couple of decades where the writer/director was invested in staying true to the source material, doing right by the characters, and not plugging in unique takes, WHILE STILL delivering an engaging, story driven film that did amazingly well, and I have to go outside the superhero genre to do it (e.g., Peter Jackson's LoTR trilogy, Denis Villeneuve's Dune, Del Torro's Hellboy, Cameron's Alita: Battle Angel, etc.)
This argument of wanting something different from "the same thing" we've gotten "over and over" doesn't make sense because we haven't gotten a "traditional super hero movie" in YEARS.
We got current star wars from bad writing and no plan and passing a specific agenda
I dont believe in "woke" as its an indiscriminate term that people use to fight diversity.
My favourite MCU film
The Soundtrack was lovely and was surprising how much TWO Chris Pratt movies have so much in common. Freaking Beastie Boys.
It’s been almost a year since I’ve seen this channel and it has grown congrats
I had fun. A great capper for to the Trilogy. And I loved the focus on Rockets backstory. :D
Rocket’s past had me emotional AF.
James Gunn does great work for sure I loved the peace maker tv show
Hello Alteori.
It was just a Hunger Games x Saw lovechild but people put it on a pedestal cause it made them cry (almost always the case in most Korean media) 😂
Same with HBO's The Last Of Us.
@@XiaoyuuuYT When I saw Squid Game I remember thinking "This is basically The Prisoner, isn't it?"
Congratulations Marvel, you actually made a good movie since Avengers Endgame, too bad its gonna be the last
This had to be my best mcu film but I wish and hope lylla, teefs and floor to return in future mcu films if that then guiding rocket and his new squad along the way or make them reborn in this world again, it is the multivers after all even when kangs return is around the corner
Low key I would’ve loved it rockets backstory was it’s own movie cause my god it was heartbreaking
Alteori and Reaper should make a video together. Opposites attract, and the accents alone would be wild!
I'll watch tomorrow
@@Alteori phanteon also great animated series
