  • We got another fox from the Fur Farm! This one is a 3 year old male. He came from the fur farm that Save A Fox shut down. Today we are releasing him into his new enclosure.

it is heartbreaking to watch him be afraid to come out of his little box and be able to touch ground for the first time. I think Plato wrote about people in a dark cave being afraid to come out and experience the sun...or something like that. It may take a while, but eventually he will trust. Thank you for saving these beautiful animals. More and more videos show that animals have many similar emotions as humans.

The fact that fur farms exist is criminal 😢 Such a beautiful creature. I wonder how his vision is with those beautiful blue eyes. He will learn to trust eventually, animals are so smart. He seems more calm than the girls, even though he’s more afraid, something tells me that he will be really friendly once he understands you’re not going to hurt him and you’re there to help him. I truly believe that animals understand this, because I have noticed this with the wild animals I rescue in Australia. Once the fear passes, they kind of get it, and have a light bulb moment. Can’t even imagine the trauma and how his feet must feel, poor baby. Thank you for what you do and thank you to save a fox.

Okay I finally get his name. I speak Japanese. Immediately I recognized Shippō as being very close to 'shippo' 尻尾 the Japanese word for tail. At first I couldn't tell if you'd meant to name him shippo but made a mistake, or if this was from something. Thank you Gabby for saying it's from Inuyasha so I could look it up. The character's name is Shippou - also stylized Shippō - In Japanese 七宝, "The Seven Treasures". So it's clearly meant as a joke/pun, it's supposed to sound like 'tail' but it has its own meaning. I love it.

Poor Shippo…I’ve seen this with many of our rescued dogs. I am impressed he came out as much as he did. I’ve had dogs who hid under the table or the bed, etc. It takes time, but they do come around. Our current dog came to us with missing teeth from chewing on cage wire. I’ve never cage trained any animal I’ve had. Our cat goes to the vet in a carrier…catching her is quite the trick as she disappears if she sees it, lol.

Have you or will you do an episode to help people who would like to visit educational places and general tips for places we should stay away from because they don’t treat their animals well or only use them for tourist attractions (like bad conditions and diets)? Not asking you to call out specific places but rather give us tips so we don’t fall for gimmicks and such? I love that you are helping out SAF by taking in some of the foxes.. but idea… keep the dogs away from the enclosure when letting a fox out for the first time. Despite not barking or being able to not hurt them, the fox doesn’t know that. It adds to the stress level. It was clear Shippo was watching them when they ran around the kennel. No criticism, but just an idea if you take in more foxes from the fur farm project. Thanks again, for what you do.

Thanks for housing and caring for the fox, but please look onto the research on castration and long term an.x1e.ty and consider less invasive methods like vastecomy for sterilization if accessible (many vets aren't trained to provide it, but some are learning due to the issues being found).
I doubt it's been studied in foxes, and unlikely to have health studies either. From medical studies in other species, it messes with serotonin.
The majority of pet studies on this have major issues, particularly around socieocomic factors as animals in lower income households are much more likely to be intact, which have increased risks to health and behavior (owner home less due to work needs, owner more likely to be stressed or unwell, more rural so further from care/resources/etc, less money for treatment/training). But despite that, there been several studies in dogs finding this /increased long term behavior issues.
There's also concerns around health, tho it can reduce some issues -- very species/breed specific. The issues being found in dogs likely caused bt reduced hormones for example iirc: joint/muscle issues (alc tears etc, waiting till adulthood helps), digestive issues (likely cross species, effects microfuana), obesity, blood/bone/prostate cancers, possible increased allergies, possible increased cognitive decline, maybe even seizures (not studied tmk, but a dog was successfully treated with trt, muscle changes from lack of hormones suspected cause).
Unfortunately, overpopulation in some species, needs of livestock industry, and socieocomic factors has likely contributed to a situation where the veterinary industry doesn't approach this issie in a unbiased manner, using overly biased research, ignoring and understuding issues (like the lack of studies in d3pre.sss1n despite being seen in medical and human studies). Some vets recommend even for pet rats like the vca (see their website where rhey claim no studies showing issues....), despite how deeply studied it's been in rats due to them being a proxy for human medical studies.
It's a bit dystopian that to 'fix' animals, we may be harming them. And really not good for trust in medical care how the veterinary industry is handling this issue. Tho, i think it's mostly due to biases and trauma caused by dealing with overpopulation, and hopefully they're handling other health issues in a more unbiased, well researched manner.
