Gray Wedge or Gray Ukraine (Ukrainian: Сірий Клин) - in Ukrainian historiography, the unofficial name of the region of residence of the Ukrainian diaspora in South-Western Siberia and Northern Kazakhstan.
The settlement of Siberia by Ukrainians, mainly from the Left Bank of the Dnieper, began in the second half of the 70ы and 80ы of the 19th century and increased sharply after the construction of the western and central branches of the Trans-Siberian Railway, the construction of which was carried out in 1895-1905 from both ends (Vladivostok and the Urals). Colonization acquired particular scope as a result of the Stolypin reform - allotting landless peasants (mainly from Ukraine and Russia) with free lands in Siberia. Ukrainians settled mainly near this railway, mainly in villages, and were engaged in agriculture and livestock raising.
In the late 20s - early 30s of the XX century, in connection with dispossession and collectivization, the regions of the republic were replenished with Ukrainian families, among whom were not only the so-called kulaks, but also middle peasants, as well as many intelligentsia, deprived of all rights by the communists and evicted to Kazakhstan.
In 1920, a village council was formed in the Buzulin farm and began to be called Ukrainian, since most of the residents were immigrants from Ukraine. The Buzulin farm was renamed the village of Ukrainka. Let's taste borsch together with Aunt Zina Ivashchenko here!
