When I worked at a grocery store sometimes I had to be the manager of the department despite being a part timer cause my manager worked there for so long she could make bank only being there 3 days a week, and I remember so many times I actually had everything done and even helped another department, there were times I just hid in the bathroom so nobody would say I wasn't working when I had absolutely nothing to do. so aggravating

Generally, office work treats employees better and pays them better, plus there is less exposure to abusive customers. On the downside, all it takes is one bad manager to turn office work into hell.

My first job was retail and I left as I got tired of it. I've worked in an office and for many years have worked from home. You find when you work from home you do more work due not getting sided tracked by coworkers, but you can also feel isolated since there is no one around to talk to during the day.

I can relate in a lot of ways, I used to work at Sears. It was only merchandise pick up, but I still had to deal with customers on the daily. I am now an owner/operator truck driver. My life has changed in many ways ever since. As you said, isolation does bring a certain level of depression. But it doesn’t amount to the uncertainty that retail brings. And the stress levels are much lower and much different compared to that, usually the stress is mainly from something that I bring onto myself. Obviously I’m on the road, and there are those assholes on the road of course. But it’s much further apart of situations to deal with and it’s very short term. Pay is better, benefits are better, and I am feeling better. I’ve recently been checking out your channel, I dig it. You bring up a lot of agreeable factors. Keep it up man. 👍🏼

I would say retail depends on the kind of retail and the none retail job depends on the none retail job. At USPS your pay is universal so if you start out in a none career job it will be 17 something dollars and that is the case in Wyoming or if you live one state away in Colorado. Once you get career you get a 4 dollar raise and you get yearly raises until you cap out at 32 dollars but there is COLA raises which can increase that amount. If you live somewhere like Wyoming where minimum wage is still 7 dollars a hour you will be making a lot at USPS. If you work somewhere like Walmart or Home Depot good luck getting any money though. I got out of retail and worked in the trades and it was very stressful not knowing if you will be at the same location, be laid off due to lack of work etc.

Damn, what office job do you have where they have a gym or they basically could care less if you were on the phone or Internet browsing when everything is done?
I work in a similar office environment, but I am a bit more of an internal worker that is involved with data analysis and such for coworkers to use. Our place doesn't have a workout area (can walk around, but usually only part of your lunch break), and while it's fine to quicky check your phone or something, it's almost expected you do something else once you get your tasks done even if no one knows what else needs to get done at that time.
Of course, I would take this office job I have over going back to work more than two months at Target again, but your place definitely seems a lot more laid back than ours. Hell, we aren't even allowed to listen to music through headphones while we work.

As someone who has done both, retail is 100% worse, without question! As an office worker, my pay is better, my benefits are better, I have better hours, I have weekends and every major holiday off, I get a week off at Christmas, and I dont have to deal with asshole unreasonable customers.
Having said all that, I think everyone should work either retail or food service at least one time in their Iives. It does help you develop people skills, you learn how to deal with hostile or confrontational situations, and it makes you appreciate your job situation that much more when you do get out of that line of work

They're both soulless, but I've found an office job that avoids a lot of the traps because the nature of the work means assignments are constantly changing. That helps a lot, though it has disadvantages too.
I find one key thing for me is I don't have to ask permission to go to the restroom or get some water. That alone makes the office work a lot more bearable.

It has to be retail. You can say what you want about office work, but at least office work has far better pay, better work schedule, time off for holidays (especially for Thanksgiving and Christmas which can be extended time off), and your not constantly being berated by some Karen/Ken who feel that they are somehow better than you and you have to stand their and take it with a smile as if it’s somehow mostly your fault.

Retail with phones has been a mixed bag with for me. At Kroger I was allowed to be on my phone and listen to music, but at my current job selling electronics I have been yelled at for using my phone just to look up some inventory to see if I could bring product out. I don't understand why we would have an app on our phones to check that if we would just be yelled at for it. I can't wait to graduate college and get out of retail. I have worked in an office for 25 years (not all at the same office) and I worked retail in my younger days. I much prefer the office, although the first one I worked at was incredibly abusive.
It was an independently owned company, so the owner was accountable to no one and acted accordingly. He had the cluelessness of Michael Scott and the belligerence of Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glenn Ross. Even his own kids were unable to work for him. Because of his verbal abuse, we went through six general managers in two years. When I declined the opportunity to become number 7, he turned up the heat on me and eventually bullied me out of the office. This was my introduction to office work and was worse in many ways than most retail jobs I had.
As far as my retail experience, working at a grocery store wasn't bad most of the time. Yes, some customers were jerks some of the time. Customers were worse in entitlement and attitude at On-Cue (a smaller version of Musicland), and downright horrible at Domino's Pizza. Working at a liquor store was a mixed bag. Most people were chill, but one woman was a hardcore, bloated, puffy-faced alcoholic who would buy two HANDLES (1.75L bottles) of bottom-shelf vodka every week (so she was drinking almost a gallon of vodka a week). She would berate us if it was at the full price of $11.99/bottle instead of the sale price of $9.99.
That said, when I eventually retire, I think I would be happy working maybe two days a week at another grocery store, just for something to do. I would maybe even do that now during the evenings, if I ever decide I need a second job.

It was a curse for me. Double shifts almost every day, (From 10 pm to 2 pm/next day and was suppose to be back by 10 pm) people quitting almost every day. (I was working in a location near a strip club and a stadium inside the city. The customers were toxic. Some did defend us but the randomness of the stadium crowd made it impossible. Then overnight horny people trying to get beer last minute before the states cut off time. The worse nights were when the stadium and the club was opened. 500+ easily. Oh yeah i forgot, overnight we lock the doors but I have to walk around the store to get ALL of their items. If they change their minds I gotta do more walking. ) It felt bad for me to quit because I knew what they were going through and I could do nothing. I couldn't stay there because one day, when my life was threatened, I felt no fear. It was at that moment I knew I was officially dead inside. I took one year off to dissolve all of that negativity I consumed for 1 year. I saw the dark side of the world working at that convenience store. That was the job my dad did to put money on the table and all i did was eat, shit and piss for 30+ years under his roof. I want him to retire soon and get his health right. So I have to finally get up and do what I need to do. I promised myself THIS year will be the moment I finally get my independence AND able to support my parents. (I'll give them the choice later. grandkids or support)

The worst thing about the retail is the people, and also the best thing about retail is the people. If you like people, if you're a social person, having an isolating office job might rot your soul and melt your brain, but if you're more of an introvert it will be more like an occasional slight depression that goes away after a few days when something good happens in your life and you realize how much worse it could all be. If you like people you can't get a normal office job. Go into HR or go into the medical field. Go into journalism or child care or teaching or something along those lines. Loneliness has literally been found to shorten the lifespan of people by YEARS, so seriously, make sure you're cut out for that kinda work before you do it. Some people just are and some people just aren't.

I work in a Target distribution center. 17.50 an hour and three 12-hour shifts (every other week or so I work a day of overtime) and the work is pretty physical demanding. Every 6 months for 3 years you get an additional 60 cents for each hour worked plus some basic coverage/benefits. Plus, we get an extra $2 per hour due to the pay differential we were given "for [our] contributions in this unprecedented time" which will be lasting a few more weeks. For an uneducated and unskilled 21-year-old, I can't complain much.

Work is work and it sucks. With that said, I work in a situation where I'm Retail and my team works in the same building as our office admin team so, office workers.
I'm here to report from direct experience that Retail is harder in every way possible. It is physically harder, mentally harder, and by far the worst one emotionally harder. The emotionally hard part has got to be the worst because it is something that doesn't need to be there but exists anyway because of the attitudes people have towards Retail workers, and it's not just the customers...
Because my team works in close proximity to our office team we really get to see what they think of us
To our office team we are losers who never made anything out of our lives and who are inferior compared to them. This attitude allows them to talk to us like children, dump extra or unwanted work they should be doing onto us, ignore our opinions and ideas, and openly critique or even make fun of us to our faces or to each other. Even the building is set up so that Retail is on the ground floor and admin is above us. Keep in mind after I've said all this that our Retail department out preforms our admin sales department quarter after quarter and recently even our CFO admitted that our Retail side is essentially floating our business right now. So you would think a raise or a promotion or even just slightly better treatment would be earned by that performance, absolutely not. After all we are Retail people, indicating that we are deficient and inept and not dependable despite years of service actually demonstrating the opposite is true. To sum up, yes Retail is worse. The primary thing that makes it worse is the second class citizen status you take on the second you step into the Retail roll regardless of performance and accomplishments, it's the kind of thing that is corrosive to the soul and after 25 years I can tell you it will hollow you out.

There are a few things I miss. I miss most of my customers and a few friends. I think that's really it. Now I'm in a lab, I'm an essential worker, we have face marks, better parties/food(not so much now). Pay is.... Honestly a lot better. Almost doubled. I work harder and I have more responsibilities but it's furfilling. No micro management, no Karens. I sometimes have to respond to email on average once a week at my house but that's no problem.
But I've worked retail my whole life other than last year so I get the whole retail aspect. Been in this job for 7 or 8 months. Retail would be soooo much better if they had set schedule. I know that's a bit impossible but that random schedule and clopenings were the devil.
About the gym, I would be so exhausted after work with no consecutive days off that I couldn't even join a gym. Hell I couldn't afford it, first of all lol. But my sleep schedule was absolutely jacked up.
And yes, I can look at my phone at work, make personal calls, look up hotel info on our computer, pay bills. Hell, sometimes I can leave! In retail is BETTER not look at my phone. So many more dumb rules in retail that makes your life miserable for no reason.

I'm a part-time florist at a grocery store. I have great coworkers, supervisors/managers, and most customers are respectful. Pretty laid-back work environment, but people still work hard because most people don't mind or even like their jobs. Customers can get pretty awful when it comes to flowers--think old ladies screaming at you because the flowers aren't 'fresh enough', or you didn't wrap them the way they wanted--but it's a fairly negligible problem all things considered. I want to get out of the retail world eventually, but for the time being it's a pretty decent position to be in.
I had a part-time office job at a college before COVID-19 hit and I got laid off. I loved that job. Like you mentioned, I also had a lot of time to help further my career. I'd look through job listings, do research, work on my portfolio... plus I really liked everyone that I worked with there. No customers to deal with; only students who were pretty understanding (and even apologetic) when you couldn't help them. I know that my managers wanted me back as soon as the school reopens and my services are needed again, but God knows how long that'll be.
I'm lucky that I don't have to take any additional hours at my grocery store job even after getting laid off from my office job. I could never work at a grocery store full-time... I get exhausted enough after just three days. Really hoping to get my office job back once everything settles down and get in there full-time. It's a much happier work environment for an introvert like me.
So, yes, office work definitely beats retail, but not all of retail is absolute hell.

Not being hassled over dumb shit is what I cannot wait to not have to deal with anymore. Im a supervisor, and I admittedly don’t really like most of the other managers. They try to get in my personal business, and I’d prefer to just stay coworkers. They make our brand their whole personality, and I don’t, so it bothers them that I have a life or something. Im also pretty sure they’re envious that I go to school and have a future outside of our store. I can tell by side comments they’ll make about my education. They think I think “I’m better than them” or something, I don’t know.
Specifically there is this one guy who I admittedly can’t stand. He’s a total snitch who tells our boss ANY thing you say that can remotely be considered “bad” about the business. He’s also weird as hell, he’s 27 and straight up speaks and acts like he’s 15. Also, this is just me being petty, but he’s a total pussy. I’ve seen him cry several times over nothing, one time because a medium sized box half full of socks hit him in the leg (yeah, really). Was really hard to contain my laughter. Point is, as you can see, he’s extremely unlikable.
Anyway, I don’t like him, but I’m cordial with him and still get all my shit done. I don’t compromise business at all, and actually had better analytics in 2019 than everyone other than one guy (he’s actually the only other manager I like). The problem is, like I said, it hurts their little feelings that I don’t join in to their little cliquey group, so I’m constantly targeted for the most asinine shit. I swear to god, one day this weenie came back from lunch one day with two other managers, and he asked me how business was going so I told him in a perfectly normal tone “Yeah not bad man, but we are a little short staffed today.” So he told my boss that I was “irate” they went to lunch. I wasn’t and literally was not referring to them leaving at all lol. Long story short, it turned into this whole gigantic thing where I had to clarify what I meant, and I got blamed for the whole thing because he “perceived that I was angry and it’s my job to change that.” Lol I guess according to my boss, slander and libel are bullshit, and whatever people say about you is always your fault!
I graduate here soon and can’t express how much I can’t wait to work with professionals who actually act like adults and won’t be dealing with idiotic high school drama shit like this anymore.

    I can relate to both…
Sadly, I’ve had it rough, quit my office job and I now find myself working Retail as a first time.
I don’t know how to feel about it which is why I searched: “why do I feel weird working retail?” And your video came out.
I mean, after feeling miserable at my last office job, to me Retail should be feeling better, but it is making me feel lost with myself and my career goals.
And I say this because my Retail teammates, managers and customers are pretty amazing, understanding, and patient.
In contrast my last office job as sales and customer service manager had amazing teammates but I couldn’t talk to them if it wasn’t for work or during break, officers and VPs that were never satisfied and constantly relieving their stress on us, and customers that were complete asswholes and scammers. I also related to the fact that most office people have different lifestyles than your regular 20’s young adult.
It probably is due to the nature of sales, because I worked in management for other company as architectural design manager and it was so much better. It was the best, it featured everything you mentioned good about office, but sadly they were a small office struggling to pay its employees.
Compared to sales office, retail is best by far. The team is truly great and the store is always busy filled with kind customer which allows me to focus on the present moment. And compared to architecture office, Retail is barely alright. And even though I am coming most recently from architectural to retail it still so weird to negate yourself. Actually in sales office I felt like I rented myself to the company, but once again in retail I feel like I rented myself and my soul to the store.
I identified the most with your explanation of how you can have multiple stress relieving methods at office work, but in retail, you have to fake it through, you have to put on that vest and erase yourself to be the company’s image. I believe that explains why I feel not miserable but shitty, I feel like I shouldn’t be faking anything but rather be that way already. Also the fact that every 15 min something reminds me of home time is passing by me and I am still working retail with no luck from my job hunt, which is extremely difficult to del with the fact that you shouldn’t get too comfy as Rtail should only be. Temporal Job
I am not sure if this makes sense, but your video did, thank you for sharing

The receivers hated us vendors, management did too and our bosses never supported us. I wouldn't wish that job on my worse enemy. And the customers still looked down on us like we were less than them. Also, even though the pay was more than your typical retail job. It did not justify the stress I went through.

What I do miss about food and warehouse work is when the work day is over, you punch out and forget about it all until your next shift. As a salaried manager now, I don't get to do that. I prefer the perks of the office environment (better pay, more comfortable , privacy etc.) People don't really care what you're doing so long as you get your work done.

I had an office job (well a call center job) working for Comcast, I started out in Bilingual Retention where customers would yell at me over the phone (in English and Spanish) because they wanted to disconnect their services for (insert x reason here) and I had to try to save them. I was in Retention for like 5 years, the managers kept making the goals harder to achieve each year so that they could reduce the commission paid to employees each year. After 5 years in Retention Comcast decided that Retention wasnt profitable enough and moved everyone from Bilingual Retention to Bilingual Inbound Sales where I still had to sell customers extra services (for existing customers) but I also had to create new accounts as well AND I had the added stress of receiving calls that WERE NOT SALES CALLS coming into my line and those counted against the metrics that the company set for us even though we had no control over those calls.
I worked for Home Depot too as my first job out of Highschool, it was crappy hourly pay (like $8-$10 an hour) and the raises they would give each year would be for like $0.10 and if you do really well and pass all your metrics you get a $0.25 raise. The pay was pretty crap and there were no bonuses or commission but at least I didnt have to worry about sales goals.

We have a girl that works here, and she is so slow at stocking. Takes the whole night so stock one pallet. He pairs her up with productive workers, the progress is still slowed to almost a halt. All because she just talks. I've gone to the habit of timing how long she stands to talk whenever I see it. The longest was a full hour and 27 mintues. We had a 1647 peice truck to work that night.
