Amazing doc. I had no idea Arafat was in fact the main peace maker. He was seeking discussions since 1979. So basically Arafat recognised he was between a rock an d a hard place - intransigent Israel and militaristic Palestinians. Poor guy.
I have always wondering why an invader should be have the right to negociate in terms of equality with a native community, in this particular case the palestinians. That's simply outrageous.
The truth is pretty simple: if any two states solution ever happened or ever happens, one which is vehemently enforced by each of the states on its own people and territory with the support of international public opinion at every new incident, there would be a new brew of terrorist attacks from clandestine groups on both sides. If there happened to be an effort to neutralize the muddling of religion and politics, as attempted during the kemalis period in Turkey, the outcome would also be the same. No one seems ready to uphold any laws in spite of religion or ethnicity. Period.
Thank God there was no Jewish settlement in Western Kenya the way it was initially proposed. Right now Kenyans will have been facing this kind of displacement from the so called Isrealis.

In February 1983, Portuguese socialist leader Mario Soares formally invited the PLO to send an observer to the April 1983 congress of the Socialist International in Sydney. The passionately pro-Israeli Australian Labour prime minister, Bob Hawke, strongly objected to the PLO's invitation; and the SI congress was hurriedly relocated to Albufeira, Portugal. Sartawi was selected by the PLO as its representative at this meeting in Portugal. Because the SI counted both the Israeli Labor Party and the PLO as members, it was hoped that such a meeting could promote the Middle Eastern peace process. On April 10, 1983 Sartawi was shot and killed in the lobby of the Montechoro Hotel in Albufeira, Portugal. The gunman escaped. Sartawi's assassination (later claimed by the Abu Nidal Organization) was witnessed by SI secretary-general, Bernt Carlsson, and was assumed to have been carried out so as to frustrate Carlsson's peace efforts

Waage is considered an norwegian expert in the conflict. But her stating that the norwegian government was pro israeli was 20 years too late. Because the support israel had at some point was demolished and turned backward during the 70s and 80s. In the 90s, there were very few politicians who openly supported Israel. She knows that but chooses to paint a picture where the deal was better for israel than the palestinians. It was actually the opposite!

Now it’s the Nowegian Labour party’s attempts at a political solution was one sided. An old English saying, “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”. The Israelis had from the outset played a long game, always willing to accept what was given to them even if it was a little plot on British controlled Palestine. The Arabs thinking they had the numbers were simply not prepared to compromise. It’s that adage of a bird in the hand and playing the long game that has enabled Israel to acquire even more than it thought it would over the years. It has over the years been able to put itself in a much more powerful and dominant position because of this while the Arabs have grown weaker for a number of reasons: 1. Bad leadership 2. Inability to see the wood for the trees 3. Cowardly leaders This had led to the Arabs losing more than they should have over the years. Arafat was not brave enough to negotiate and agree with the Israelis for fear of being assassinated by the more militant members of the Arab nation. Leaders who had the courage to take that step paid for it with their lives - King Abdullah of Jordan and President Anwar Sadat just to mention two. As to the Oslo Accords both 1 and 2, supporters of the Palestinian cause have said it was a bad unacceptable deal because of the settlements, well there are more settlements now compared to what there was 50 years ago. What the lesson here is when you are negotiating from a weak position you take the best you can until you are in a position of strength. Over 70 years ago Israel had most if not all of the Arabs states against it, today most of this states are for now all prepared to side the Abrahamic Accord to the detriment of the Palestinians. Of course people will want to discuss the nuances of the Palestinians/Israeli conflict … etc, the fact is they are losing out. We all sit in the comfort of our Western homes, in our African independent communities, imperfect as they are criticising Israel, but they have played the game perfectly and the Arabs have not. These are home truths the Arabs do not like to talk about but to quote a bit of Colonel Jessup, “… you don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about…” the Arabs know that they messed up and the tragedy is they keep messing up.
