- World Trade Center Recovery Operation - A Humanitarian Effort
This film was made for the Corp of Engineers during the recovery operation following the September 11th attacks. Part instructional video, part documentary, the film follows the people, agencies, and processes that worked together to recover evidence, personal property, and human remains from the rubble of the Trade Center. This never before seen footage and perspective on the 911 tragedy illustraits the tremendous scope of the recovery operation and it s importance to the physical and emotional healing of the United States.
I was Captain on one of the tugboats that transferred all that debris to FKL by barge. Took us almost 2 years. That was my tugboat in the first scene they showed a tugboat. I was captain on that boat up until a month ago when my company finally sold it.

@davepowell7168 Barges are larger and allow more. It would have taken longer for trucks to do what Barges did. Also, Manhattan is surrounded by water, trucks would have had to go around the water, so it's longer to commute. Barges go through the water.

I was from the UK and was part of the clean up operation in the buildings around Ground Zero. A very sobering job, especially when bodies were brought out. I spent two months there and then out in Long Island rebuilding computers. It certainly affected the way I look at the world.
I'm an American, and I want to thank you for your hard work and dedication. Our recovery would not have been possible without you.

At the time the equivalent of about $5 per hour and away from my family for three months total. Just wanted to help so no other reward at all, ever.
Its a shame that this video hasn't gained much views. Very interesting and educational. These guys definitely rewrote the book of a large crime scene investigation.

To respectfully put aside the tragic loss of human life on 9/11 for a sec, there is so much that intrigues me about this event. The clear up operation is one of them. Totally overlooked by the masses. I really enjoyed this video and it has answered so many questions i've had for the last 2 decades.

Phone Calls from Flight 93
When United Airlines Flight 93 was hijacked, thirteen passengers and crew members responded by placing phone calls to the authorities, to United Airlines, and to their family members and friends. According to the FBI, thirty-seven phone calls were placed from on board Flight 93 between 9:28 when the plane was hijacked until the time of the crash at 10:03. Thirty-five of these calls were made on the Airfones located on the back of the seats in the last nine rows of the plane. Credit card records reveal the time of the call, Airfone caller’s name, the number or numbers dialed, the duration of the call, and the row from which the call was placed. These phone records were entered as evidence during the sentencing trial of Zacarias Moussaoui in 2006. According to the 9/11 Commission Report, the series of calls from the flight provided vital information both to the ground and to the passengers. Calls from on board the plane revealed that:
Multiple videos of Two planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, causing both towers to collapse.
Many of the hijackers behind the deadliest attack on American soil spent time in Palm Beach County. The hijackers lived here and they took flight lessons in Lantana and on the Treasure Coast.
The terrorists remained in control of the plane and chose to crash it rather than risk the passengers and crew regaining control of the aircraft.At 10:03 a.m., Flight 93 plowed into an empty field at a speed of 563 miles per hour.
I can believe they sifted through every spec to find anything they could to help the people of the city, what an astounding achievement
The amount of detail that went into this recovery is truly amazing...... I don't think people really knew or understood this backstory.
I don't think anyone who wasn't in New York at this time will ever understand the magnitude of this event and the even larger aftermath. I definitely wasn't there and I can only try to imagine. I'll never spend days/weeks/months/years seeing this seemingly endless task drag on.

I remember waiting for the earth movers (shakers) to sprinkle the debris and then we would go in a search hoping to find pieces of pockets that might hold pieces of ID which may help bring closure to the families of the slaughtered. Then we had buckets to place them in. As inhumane as it was, I remember placing pieces of bones in buckets. It was surreal. The attacks completely changed my life and I later focused my life’s work in counterterrorism. Watching this video gives me a first time appreciation for all that went into making this happen. Thank you for sharing this, and for all that were involved in planning this operation, to those that operated the heavy machinery, to those that fed us and provided us safety gear, God bless you and thank you. I still have my purple face mask that I was issued at Fresh Kills and can’t seem to part with it. To the fallen.

This is the bit you don't see. How many countries would have just dumped the debris and called it a day, here a massive operation took place just to find what little remained of the lives shattered in the event. This deserves more recognition.
I was in turkey last year when the earth quakes happened. 50000 people died. The buildings collapsed the same way the towers did. Not a day in some cities and they just started bulldozing. Over the rubble people probobly where killed from it

I will never forget being there as part of the recovery effort shortly after 9/11. I cannot find the words to describe the gravity of it, and what it does to a person. Something I will never forget.
Who realized this behind the scene clean up was so intense. We all moved on, although this tragedy will never leave us yet his video shows how incredible the human spirit is. Bravo to all who worked these very necessary and heartbreaking tasks. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I always wondered what happened to all the debri and how it was handled to help find and identify those lost. I had seen pictures of the smashed-up ambulances, fire trucks and police cars, but I had absolutely no clue that a project like this was undertaken. Those people sorting the materials for remains or personal effects were heroes of a rare nature. In every kind of weather; rain, sleet and blazing 10-degree days in their ppds were dedicated to the extreme to bring closure and healing to the friends and families of the dead by finding every little scrap. The most touching and fascinating story I heard was the discovery of tiny gold locket, crushed but still internally intact that contained a little lock of hair. The dna was identified and the locket given to the family, but what amazed and touched me was that that family had something to bury because the hair belonged to the deceased. They never found anything else from that person.
The "Fresh Kills" Landfill. Such an eerie name given what happened.
The name “Fresh Kills” comes from the Middle Dutch word kille, meaning “riverbed” or “water channel.” Before the landfill opened in 1948, the Fresh Kills site was primarily tidal creeks and coastal marsh.
I knew I couldn't have been the only one thinking that. Regardless of it being named that for years before.
Kills means river. They changed the name I do believe.

Interesting that all the workers are wearing ventilators to sift through the material. But during the weeks that followed at ground zero and the surrounding area, people were told that the air was safe to breath. Hundreds of fire fighters have since died of cancer and lung problems.
Thank you to all that helped with the recovery project. Everyone worked endlessly to help bring closure to grieving families.
i love it. this is why i loved being in the military. the ability to go to an empty field. & set up a fully functioning hospital unit with all the equipment, supplies & personnel ready to receive patients in a matter of hours. this operation they set up within hours is impressive. agencies working together, it's just beautiful to watch. good job every last one of these people. i shared this on fb, i hope it gets watched by at least some folks. damn, they were thorough!

My son and I own several 18 yard ford sterling dump trucks and two bulldozer 2 excavators and 3 skidsteers and front end loaders and a labor crew of 9 individuals We ran a construction demolition company in Florida in those day's
We wanted to volunteer our services to the NYC recovery program , but they told us they had too many trucks and equipment on site , and that they had intended to make use of the barge ships in the area etc ,etc 🚢 ...I wasn't too upset about Being told no . At least we offered to help Free of charge..I'm a Vietnam War veteran and i love my country . ❤️ God bless those man and women that worked the recovery operation the NYC police department and the fire and rescue NYCFD 🙏 . Some who are 🤒 ill to this day from being exposed to the toxins in that nightmare of a disaster 💔
4:25. I was the night shift FBI medic. December 2001. I worked out of the truck with the red cross on the roof. Played hockey with Richard Marx when we were kids and didn't know he had joined the Bu until I saw him there. On my first day in I took a wrong turn and was driving behind one of the huge dump trucks. A steel beam rolled off and almost crushed my rental car. By the time I left that car was caked in crud that would not come off. Fresh Kills had a unique smell that I will never forget.
Must have been a very emotional, often heartbreaking task. Kudos to all those involved. ❤

You didn't realise at the time where the trade centre debris went as the site at ground zero was respectfully cleared l. Yet to this day, the sad reality is that many families have never had a body, remains, or personal belonging. Such wicked wicked act caused so much imaginable suffering for loved ones.

The effort and dedication given to the project is amazing. Looking thru such a large scale of debris for human remains/ personal items is touching. And essentially the whole thing is a crime scene as well so anything could be evidence.

The people in this video definitely deserve recognition and it's unfortunate that their services practically went unseen. I suppose I can understand why a lot of people would never even think about this aspect of the operation and of how much work everyone stationed at Fresh Kills put into it, but hopefully more and more people become aware of the hardwork done here because the men and women who remained solely at this site aren't any less significant than those that removed the debris from ground zero.
On a sidenote: Fresh Kills is honestly a great name for a salvage, but I bet they absolutely hated what they'd named it once 9/11 happened and everything was taken here, especially since there were actual humain remains found in the debris and that a major part of the operation was ultimately devoted to sifting out the remains of people that had recently been killed in a large-scale terrorist attack just across the harbor. Obviously, when it was named, no one would have ever expected anything like this, so it's not like they'd originally chosen a bad name for their business years back when it had opened, but it must have really bothered them post-9/11.
This is heartbreaking and my heart goes out to all the men and women that put this operation into action. We'll always remember 🇬🇧 🇺🇸
I would have been honored to work sifting those many tons of debris. This is among our country’s finest collaborations ever. 22 years later, I am still moved, and continue to discover new content from this extraordinary event.

Thanks mate I am from Germany and asked myself why it’s named fresh kills, as it fit the situation way too much and thought it was just morbid.

Good morning, everyone. It's 5:52 AM EST. Around this time 22 years ago everyone was waking up just like right now, preparing for another day. The attackers were literally making their way through security at the airports during this time. Parents said goodbye to their children, to their families, not knowing it would be the last time they would ever see each other.
I wasn't a victim of 9/11. I was only a child then and lived in a different state, so I don't want to give the impression I have any relation to the events.

The World Trade Center area was actually planned in the 1940s when asbestos was used still in a lot of construction. A lot of buildings would also have not revamped or removed asbestos unless it was a danger or exposed. For example some historic buildings just because of their age they do have asbestos in their making but are not redone in a modern fashion because asbestos will not be a danger until the house is opened up. There's a ton of places that have asbestos lining that you've been inside and never thought of
Just worries me because I’m sure there are still human remains there. While all those folks worked hard for so long to sift through stuff. Im sure there were many times they saw something (inadvertently or not), and passed it through.
There's a great documentary called "The Last Secrets of 911" in which the processes of DNA extraction and remains identification are explained in depth. Really interesting documentary and I highly recommend it. In it, people who are part of those identification efforts openly admit there are still people buried at Fresh Kills in the form of fragments that were too small to be identified as such with the technology and means of the time. Its unfortunately the large limitation when there is such a large, diverse volume of material that they had to sift through.
I believe 40% haven’t been identified, it’s haunting to think of that high number, I can’t imagine how families, loved ones have to live knowing that they’ve haven’t found their loved ones.

Can you imagine a human being turned into merely dust and using teeth or other things to identify a person I’m still mad 20 years later I’m a true American not because I live in the US but because I believe that at the end of the day we all are one no matter what 🙌🏾
One thing all of us that were of age old enough to know when it happened share a sense of kinship and respect, we all share a hope and a patriotism for this country, a deep respect for one another, a true respect for military and first responders. We all understood late 9/11 and 9/12 how fragile yet strong this country is. I think this is why you see a lot of the younger generations prior to this so disrespectful towards the country, so woke and agitated by the wrong things. I’m only 29 so i was 7-8, i remember so vividly though and everyone near me was crushed but eager to be there for fellow Americans. We understand this country can be 9/12, sadly we’ve let two sides and narratives come between us and I’m hoping more and more will decide enough is enough. I love this country, I love this countries freedoms, I love the opportunity here. I’m not hurt by words or political incorrectness, we all live for those that passed. @3:34 when the loader / backhoe grabbed that chunk of metal, its heart breaking to see what clearly appears to be a pair of suit pants and or a shirt, cant really tell but its clearly clothing... mixed in with the debris and all shredded up, clothes that someone was probably wearing that day, and died in.... I cant believe the operator didn't stop immediately to investigate it further. Could have had DNA on them, ID, something, that could have been someone's closure...
This is such a good video. I often wondered how they managed to remove everything from the site. While not absolutely perfect, this is as thorough a search process as possible.

And in so commenting elicits more comments on those bizarre theories, and it feeds on itself. In an age of distrust and well-funded echo chambers insisting everything you know is false, it’s a never-ending slap in the face to every victim of this tragedy.

Been watching 9/11 videos every year since 2002 and never seen how the clean up operation was processed at the end of the line. Conspiracy theorists just screamed "everything was taken and sent away to China before being investigated". This disputes that for me after all those years of considering them correct.

@@davepowell7168 I have looked very hard over many years. I used to find the theories very interesting and highly believable but they're being evermore debunked. The Government were quite likely to know that such an attack was imminent but the whole "explosives used to bring the towers down" I believe is not true.
Sadly conspiracy theorists still ignore evidence in favour of their pseudoscience and paranoia.

That's same job I was doing at the time too. I remember starting to ask where a part was when the second tower fell on TV . I was driving between the shop and the warehouse when the first one fell. I remember like yesterday. Hey Mark where's this... Oh no .. Thinking there went thousands of lives. I was in Colorado, still in Colorado but that was my job then too. I was glued to the radio that day while I made my deliveries.

Seeing Ground Zero on TV I just would sit there and look at it and think how are they ever going to get that clean? There’s no way you’re ever gonna get all of that cleared away or it’ll take like a long long time… How do you even begin? And then his video here explained it and I think it’s extremely fascinating, so thank you for sharing this video.
That man openly crying at the beginning, watching the south tower collapse…that’s heavy. Heartbreaking. I hope he has since found some peace.

WOW, talk about a fine tooth comb this process was. This is fascinating. I always wondered how remains and belongs were sorted from debris. So sad 40% victims were unidentified. Those poor people were obliterated.I think of the families 😢
I remember my mom wanted to go and stand on the side of the road and cheer for these guys… hand out sandwiches and water and just wave and cheer and thank the people that cleaned up the aftermath… she couldn’t do to health reasons, but she was packing bags and planning her trip… just to wave and say “thank you” in the only way she could…
This was a very interesting watch. Let us remember all those who perished, you will never be forgotten. And to those who helped with the recovery and rescue operation, thank you.
What an utterly impossible task. And yet, it was accomplished.

I'm so sorry I did not know this before! Amazing concerted efforts between agencies to learner this horrific, unimaginable still! event. This is an ultimate example of how we truly can pull together.
