Some very fundamental design gems in this video. Every designer should see this, whether they are doing material design or not.

Nice press conference! Google really stepped it up a notch and upgraded the visual design; the color scheme is great and the overall feel you get from this, as an Android user, is a much compact yet easy to use design.

4th is missing, but I think this might be included in the 3rd principle as well:
    3) .....
    4) One adaptive design
A single underlying design system organizes interactions and spaces. Each device reflects a different view of the same underlying system. Each view is tailored to the size and interaction appropriate for that device. Colors, iconography, hierarchy, and spatial relationships remain constant.

    The 9 Material Design Principles:
    1: Material is the metaphor
2: Surfaces are intuitive and natural
    3: Dimensionality affords interaction
    4: One adaptive design
5: Content is bold, graphic, and intentional
6: Color, surface, and iconography emphasize actions
    7: Users initiate change
8: Animation is choreographed on a shared stage
    9: Motion provides meaning

In terms of animations and transitions, google is still behind, but they're getting there. IOS had this same concept since the beginning, that's why their animations, transitions and fluidness is way ahead.

      That's quite true.
But I stand with Google.. They were the ones who had the guts to explain their design concepts clearly to the world, which by the way came as a result of years of research..... Just for common people to use, not only in Google products, but in any of their platform...
      Hail Google. :)

I have some doubts, If I create an app with material design could it be used on older Android SDK's like 4.4 or lower? I am going to have to create separated layouts for material design and the themes before? The effects of material design are going to be viewed in older devices? This las doubt is due to my cellphone has Android 4.4.2 and I can see the effects added to Google+ and the buttons of the camera app. Thanks in advance for your answers.

Funny how all the comments from 2014 is people saying words like 'ugly', 'useless'.
Read comments from 2016 video on material design improvements and it's words like 'genius' 'amazing' 'intuitive'.
People just like things theyre used to. Any change, for the better annoys them.
Android used to be a big mess, clunky, ugly, random. After lollipop, android underwent a revolution. From that moment it overtook ios in terms of user interface.

These guys need to get outside more often. Guys... natural feeling animation follows nature. It cracked me up how they were trying to explain why the circles did the expand and fade animations when you touched them. Simply put, it's like when your finger touches a still pool of water. The reaction, in nature, is a ripple effect. And basic shapes are seen throughout nature. "Paper"... how about when a leaf blows and lands, covering an object... or is blown away?

IOS is great! Youre right. AMOLED displays save on power with dark colors. But finding good combinations with a dark background is hard and for some colors non existent. For example, yellow. Yellow looks tacky on a black background or neon.

While the efforts are appreciated, I truly hope that the whole concept will be embraced by Google merely as a CONTRIBUTION to an ever changing environment with no claims for supremacy, intellectual property, patenting, By never making THIS the "norm", the environment itself would be allowed to grow through multiple influences and outside contributions.

Touch feedback using the calculator app is absolutely redundant, as well as some of the unnecessary animations and details, that serve no visual purpose for the user. And there seems to be no rules/guidelines applied whatsoever to the positioning of buttons or style. It feels like a UI made to look good on presentations and not exactly adding a lot of value to the end user. This is still, for the most part, Google catching up with Apple and MS.

This is a UI that is designed for Google engineers, to look good in presentations. I am completely baffled why Google (and others, to a lesser extent) is OBSESSED with hiding things! So many features are buried, that you need to poke in mysterious places to bring up the options you want. And why so flat??? Let's make a whole set of icons at 12:20 but completely ignore the fact that PEOPLE SEE IN COLOUR. Just throw out a whole dimension of human vision. These guys look like they've read some books on UI design, and have come up with what they think looks cool in the office and for them to play with. Cause everyone thinks like a software engineer. Not.

The keynote actually has quite a few good points and if you listen carefully you'll understand what they're trying to say. However, to put it charitably, they're presentation is ballsack.
All of them are too nervous to talk; they don't look like they've prepared what they're going to say. Finally found something that Google can learn from Apple.

You started by asking yourself "what is software made from" which made you define the underlying physics of the interfaces and crack its visual language which unified the classic concept of good design with a solid understanding of the most fundamental physical properties and then you're asking me to pretend that the screen is a 3d physical space to make sense of your design, if that means anything it means that thinking like "Why it behaves this way" to design software is a very bad idea. and your conclusion "Material Design" is even worse.

When is this hideous fad going to die?
Congratulations, now Android looks just as ugly as Ios and Windows 8. It's not simpler by any means, it just adds lazy blocks of a flat bright color pointlessly and moves easy options to stupid floating bubbles that may or may not appear when you want them.
So now I've got to scroll back to the top of all your apps just to click said bubble instead of it being always ready in a toolbar or with a swipe.

    • @robertsacamano
      @robertsacamano 9 років тому +4

vexx506 The idea of a floating button is to be always ready no matter where you are in the app, if it is a button you'll need to use constantly and it is out of reach, the app is not following all of the rules. Or maybe you just want to be a little bitch on the internet to feel powerful in the only place you can, the virtual world. If you want to criticize something, learn to constructively criticize first.

And suddenly all the Google Fanboys who always said, that they don't care how it looks, are thinking that Android was ahead of iOS. Let me tell you: It is not! Compared to Apple's Design talks this is boring and weakly supported with arguments.
What matters in the end with Design is the value for users, those animations are pretty, but not of any value!

Apple Dazzles its audiences with emphasis on previously owned android features and make it sound like a brand new innovation. Thats what apple does. They dangle shiny objects in front of their cats. Android has nearly everything it needs it terms of usage. All it was lacking was a design overhaul. It has that now.. What about ios? Its still missing a multi tasking system that actuall does what it should, multi-task.. Its still missing customization options which dont void warranty. Its still missing the abiliity to set default apps like Chrome. Its missing a universal share option that goes across all 3rd party apps. Its not a matter of being a fanboy. I own both OS. In terms of usage android is still ahead. I love Apple for its app store. Thats why i own an ipad. But when it comes to phone use, apple is inconvinient. People want customization, not a forced way to use a phone.
The vast majority of people who say android is crap clearly either used very old versions OR in most cases used Crapsung (Samsung). Thats not what android is and fuck samsung for ruining the true experience of android.

Vikram Mohan I know taking your head out of your ass is difficult, but you should do this next time you honestly think you can give opinions on iOS. You don't have to use iOS (I don't) to see that most of what you're saying is wrong; or will soon be wrong. First, the multitasking system in iOS is nearly identical to that of Android. You activate it and a screenshot of the app the last time it was open shows up, you can swipe to close. Android's is extremely similar in every aspect. While jailbreaking technically does void your warranty, if you every actually need warranty work done, just restore it to stock; and there's no chance of bricking c:. Third Apple has opened up third party sharing in iOS 8, so that's now also invalid. It really doesn't take much intelligence to realize this at all. You talk about people who say Android is crap without using it; well practice what you preach.

    • @kylepreiksa8183
      @kylepreiksa8183 10 років тому

Vikram Mohan Android IS more customizable and open. However, it sometimes suffers for this. It makes it easier to write things that don't behave nicely or as expected, especially for those with less smartphone experience. Example: a redirect to Google Maps from a web page. Yesterday, my dad was trying to exit Google Maps so he clicked the back button, the browser re-appeared, but in less than a second, he was re-directed back to maps! He was so confused why he couldn't "back out". Now, I told him that you can just tap the home button to go home, and that if he was quicker with his back taps it WOULD go back, BUT this proves that it is confusing for some people. People like to feel like they are smarter than their devices, like they understand them, and not be overwhelmed by options that 1% of users actually use. When designing iOS, Apple made it impossible to let a developer (or user) do something that Apple doesn't want them to do. You know what the advantage of this is? Consistency. That is it. Consistent results when you perform consistent actions. Apple is vastly improving the extensibility of their OS with iOS8 and I think some time in the future they WILL allow you to use alternate apps (really, the only default app I want to replace is Apple Maps with Google Maps) They are just making sure it is done in a smart and secure way, which, sorry to say, Android's isn't. If you only install apps from the Play Store, you are good, since Google checks them, but it is relatively easy to sideload AND Google doesn't consider "inconsistent behavior" to be an App unworthy of being in their store. Personally, I used Android to its full potential, rooted, unlocked bootloader, custom ROM, etc. But you know what? I got an iPhone and I love it. I don't miss being able to browse my filesystem, I don't miss inconsistent ways to change Application settings, I don't miss multitasking where a badly behaved app is allowed to do whatever the hell it wants in the background (I think iOS's system is a better idea on a phone... only certain things need to happen in the background... shut the rest down. Windows Phone/ Windows 8.1 operates in the same way so others agree), and most of all I don't miss the problems that come with fragmentation ("Your device is not compatible...", Bluetooth low energy support which took forever for fitbit to support even though I had KitKat on my device, etc.) If you have an iPhone it "just works" with any accessory made, and with any app. I DO miss Android's Intents (inter-app sharing) which will be here in iOS8 and I miss widgets but only for the weather. I liked being able to glance at my phone and see the weather without opening an app. For the rest of them, they were generally impractical for me.
To each their own though, I'm not saying you should like iOS just like I don't think anyone should tell someone that they should hate iOS. Some people just like to tinker (myself included) and enjoy the experience. Others don't care or just want a simpler experience. There is a reason why the two are still competing, there are pros and cons to both platforms.
