Now, you know that we all love some Howard Phillips Lovecraft over at Top 5 Scary Videos, but for the most part - we’ve only ever covered the great, fleshy, tentacle creatures that want to spread madness and ruin throughout the universe - but we’ve never really touched on the few brave souls that try to combat them - or, well - in most cases, brave victims. Lovecraft had a penchant of creating flawed, oftentimes throwaway characters that served as the tasting menu for the Great Old Ones - and the only thing left for us to do, is to pay tribute to them.

Please stop saying his name like that... and I'm a nameless protagonista... The Mandela Effect has everything to do with them. Ask Geordie Rose if you don't believe me... I almost got taken... that was almost 12 years ago...
Jack we call that "Johnny knockers" 🤣😂
Ever read the Atomic Sea series? By Jack Connor. It's a lovecraftian world adventure.
Lovecraft is an amazing yet scary dude his stuff is way to lifelike I'm positive that he was receiving this info from a different universe
He probably was 😎👍
DMT
Jack, you need have a lovecraftian version of yourself. You need your doctorate in lovecraftlogy " Dr. Twocoat" 😂😂
Lovecraft, demons and scary encounters in the woods....I do love this channel.
We all do m8
I gotta say, this is a pretty stand up channel. I love the theme, and I love how you deliver your appraisals of various entertainment mediums with enough detail to be worth watching, but without spoiling key plot points and twists. Both presenters are interesting, genuine and clearly very knowledgable in the genre. Koodos for pumping out one quality list after the other in a format that can so easily be done poorly. And I can't believe your all in Toronto! Where do I drop off the beers?
PS. Can I get a shoutout for my beautiful girlfriend Shawna who is a vastly knowledgable horror nerd? And she's also just neat.
I have to admit the Titus Crow books are some of my favorites, in continuing Lovecraft's work. Brian Lumley did an excellent job with those.
Jack in the lovecraftian Mythos I think you would be considered the Archivist, keep up the great work
Wonderful use of the word eldritch, Jack.
This was a nice list. By chance, do you have a Top 5 Lovecraftian Antagonists list on the way? Cheers for all the HPL-related content, and let's keeps hoping for the HPL cinematic universe (please ref my comments on previous vids about how that should come to pass).
Don't forget The Doctor as he faced The Old Ones in the VNA Doctor Who books. Even some Doctor Who monsters were retroactively turned into Old Ones. For example Fenric was later revealed to be Hastur
Wow, as a self proclaimed Lovecraft enthusiast I enjoyed all your mentions. Keep up the good work. T-shirt rocks.
Just started watching this channel a little while back and I have to say some for the greatest stuff I've seen on a top 5 list
Am really loving Lovecraft's work! Thanks Jack!
hey jack! i was was wondering if you were into the dresden files book series. love the show man keep it up!
I have to say, this is one of the best channels in general that I've found on UA-cam. I stumbled across it and haven't looked back, your videos ALWAYS keep me interested, especially if the subject is something that I'm not well versed in. Hope to see you all on here for a LONG time 😁👍.
I live for these!
We all do
Yep 😎
I love HP Lovecraft's works but is there any love for Edgar Allen Poe here? Just curious.
Poe is great at imbuing a sense of dread and ambiguity. You never know if people are actually cursed or just crazy.
I love that the majoity of heroes in Lovecraft are either those of much higher learning, usually PhD or Doctorate, who are knowledgeable and wise enough to know how to "fight" back. Or their someone like a PI or Detective who's already seen the worst of humanity and therefore aren't caught off guard by the Eldrich.
It's called 'Ding dong ditch' in the US!!! lol
Knock down ginger is what we called it in South east london. Dw gingers never get hurt
Also doorbell ditch.
Ring ring raja in Chile. Hahaha!!
Bedfordshire area, it was always called knock down ginger.
It’s from the poem:
‘Ginger, Ginger broke a winda. (window)
Hit the winda, crack!
The baker came out to give him a clout ( smack around the head)
And landed on his back’
Hi, Jack. In Northern Kentucky (and Southwestern Ohio), the ringing of the doorbell is called the 'ding, dong, ditch' and the perpetrators are called 'ditchers'. It's an insult. Keep it going! Love the Lovecraftian stuff!
day of the triffids was an incredible movie definitely do a video about it.
Great video, Jack, but the number 1 spot must belong to Randolph Carter. He appears in more of Lovecraft's stories than any other protagonist (five, I think). Although in a couple of those stories, Carter just has a walk-on, he is the hero of "The Unnameable", "The Testament of Randolph Carter", and Lovecraft's only novel, "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath" where he eventually goes toe-to-toe with Nyarlathotep himself!
Love these! Keep the Lovecraft content coming!
"Ding dong ditch" or "ring the thing"
I've also hear it called knock the block where the goal is to ding dong ditch the entire town block without getting caught.
have you guys ever thought about doing a "top 5 scariest Pokedex entries"? you'd have A LOT to choose from!
If we're going outside of Lovecraft himself, I would HAVE to add Derleth's Dr. Laban Shrewsbury of 93 Curwen St., Arkham.
Dude battled and stopped Cthulhu and related repeatedly, even leaving his physical body in the Nameless City to send his "being" fleeing to distant Celaeno in the Pleiades to study and grow stronger. And recruiting other people who he then brought with him in his mission, even to Celaeno and beyond.
That's pretty badass, no?
I agree I loved reading about him
We called it ding dong ditch, can you do a count down on the scariest scary stories from the trilogy of Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark?
Walter Gilman and Randolph Carter are my favourite Lovecraftian human characters
I think Solomon Kaine is the most badass Lovecraftian character.
Dr. Dyer is number one, the fact that he remains sane at the the end of The Shadow Out Of Time makes him so.
Please do a Suspiria video. Great Channel and great movie.
HP Lovecraft was a huge inspiration in my THE HARD RETURN series.
Bravo for the Lumlely mention! One of my favorite authors! Check out Donald Tyson.
We called it Dong Dong Ditch when I was a kid.
I never ran, so I never played.
Sometimes the scariest horror monster is the one telling the story
In my days ring the doorbell and run was called Ding Dong, Ditch.
Can we get a top 5 scariest comics? Also can we get a contest like a win a day with Danny and Jack or win a day with Rebecca and Ahman or something? I’d personally take Danny and Jack just cuz talking scary stuff, playing some video games, and drinking some beer sounds like a damn good time that wouldn’t piss off the wife js.
Herbert west is
a g.
Reanimater is a great film.
And bears only superficial resemblance to Lovecraft's tale. Reanimator while a sick-fun film barely skirted the periphery of the original. Granted that 20s/30s fiction doesn't age well when removed from its cleaner era headless guys "eating the beardless clam" is more shock schlock than psychological horror.
Love the mtv shirt!
“Knock and run”. In Australia 👌
In London we called it Knockdown ginger. No idea who or what ginger was, or what it has to do with tormenting your neighbors.
Top 5 Scary videos 4 lyfe!
Love your T-shirt
the Knocker-Knocker in the U.S. is called Ding-Dong Ditch you ring the doorbell and run before the person come to answer the door
That’s badass of those people who did that
As HP Lovecraft, I approve this vid.
What about Randolph Carter? He is awesome!! How is he not in this list?
Shadow on the insmuth protagonist
Ummm I don't remember name
I think protat have not name in this novel
He's name is Robert Olmstead
cmon Randolph Carter should be higher. Imagine going through all of that stuff in the dreamquest of unknown kadath
Here in Argentina we call it "Ring raje" which roughly translates to "ring the doorball and run the hell away"
So, I gave up on the SCP I was making, but not on the creature that was supposed to be the SCP👍, I still have some plans on it
Why did you give up on it? I was really looking forward to reading it.
@@ohionative5237 you know, the SCP community didn't really want it, don't know why, but I guess no means no, but I'm not giving up on the creature that was supposed to be the SCP, I really see it having too much potential to just be left as an OC

Don't give up Dude! Just try something else ye, WE ALL BELIEVE IN YOU! Go for it ye 😎👍

No probs my friend. Chin up & do your best in what ever project that you set your mind on 😎👍
Ding dong dash -- assuming the victim had a doorbell.
Take the advice of lovecraft fear the unknown 😱
That's what Lovecraft wanted us to do
@@kingsolomon673 And that's what our society does now. Lovecraft would be very proud. The man was awesome, but a total coward.
@@ishmiel21 how was he a coward?
@@kingsolomon673 Because he was terrified of the unknown. Anything he didn't understand, he was afraid of.
@@ishmiel21 guess that's kinda understandable
Not surprising Lumley wanted a more bad ass protagonist. He is retired British military after all. And as we saw in Dog Soldiers, they can fight werewolves.
*I CLICKED ON THE SPEED OF LIGHT*
I clicked so fast that my tablet committed not feeling so good

The scariest lovecraft protagonist is killer keemstar
I am ashamed of what we called that prank/game in my youth... I live in Arkansas, and I didn't know any better back then.
I grew up in Kentucky and called it the same thing. I cringe thinking about it!
I wondered how this term for the game would be addressed. Virginia here, same cringe inducing name.
Well from where I’m from Milwaukee WI we always called it “ding dong ditch”.
Long Live Titus Crow, the combination of cosmic horror and Hyberborian action...
Ye olde Nicky Nicky Nine Doors...
Or the Ding Dong Ditch
Walter Pickman also is a badass :)
brian lumley also made an awesome series called the necroscope
Repairman Jack, subset of The Adversary Cycle by F. Paul Wilson.
What no *"spoilers alert"* @2.06?!
Thanks, all those 5 are more or less vanhelsings :-)
4:00 Richard Baird...
In the US ringing the door bell then running is called DING DONG DITCH
Dr. Henry Armitage is the only hero that wins he is the Arkham version of Bernard Quatermass!!!
Lovecraft ROCKS!!!!!!!
Yeah, well, here in the U.S., we call them "Ding Dong Ditchers".
Madness is a good thing
thank you for who liked this up to 968 it felt amazing getting to be like 969
SCP vs HP Lovecraft
We called it ding dong ditch
Do you guys play Arkham horror LCG? Want to play with me?
grave-robbers, body-thieves, and sorcerers?
Sweet! LoveCraft
Sweeter than sugar
@@kingsolomon673
Sweeter than honey! 😎🤙
I live in the Mountains of Maddness
Knock-a-door-run? Really the only country of men almost as uncreative as mine (the US, not Austria) is England. We called the game Doorbell.
I wanna know titus crow more
Regarding non-Euclidian geometries, places, spaces, architecture ....
Fractals. Totally non-Euclidian. Particularly the higher dimension fractals. ;) jus sayin yo
Where is Randolph Carter?
Kthanid and titus are the only hope of the universe
Can I find any Lovecraft stuff for free online?
Following. I'm a new HPL reader. I'm a linear thinker so this should be a fun challenge.
@@kinkykitty77 let me know what the best ones are! 🐯plz and ty
It is called quantum mechanics.... not quantum physics
In America we call it ding dong ditch
Hello
Hello there
If Lovecraft didn't write it,it's not a Lovecraft character.
Shrek
The scariest Lovecraft protagonist was himself because he was frighteningly racist
Hey
Hello there
Ding dong ditch!
How are these people scary? Throwing Lovecraft's name for views is pretty ridiculous
Suuuup
Helloooooo therrrrrrre
Not a fan of more pulpy Lovecraftian, like Titus Crow. A little too contrary to the cosmic horror mentality.
The Transition of Titus Crow is on my top 10 Favourite novels List. Thank you for Mentioning Brian Lumley ! His protagonists are REAL men Not snowflakes . Purists can stick a tentacle you know where !
Ding-dong ditch.
Ding dong ditchem in California
Heh heh heh. I get to be 666 on the like button.
Back in the 70s "Ding Dong Ditch" went by a another name that was very rasists.
