      You ain't lying. Because the Popeye aspect was never covered about how the game was originally based off of Popeye, but had to be changed after they were denied rights to use the characters.

    It's neat seeing how far you've come in terms of production value and story telling. This is great stuff (even better if you consider how much content was trash on youtube a decade ago) but side by side, damn you've upped your game.

    Donkey Kong wasn't just based on Popeye, the game was originally going to be a popeye game but they couldn't get the rights so they changed the sprites, names, story and voila, Donkey Kong was born!

      Fun fact: The year after Donkey Kong was released, Nintendo was able to release a video game version of Popeye. In it, Olive Oyl tosses down objects such as hearts and musical notes, and Popeye tries to catch them all while avoiding Brutus. There's also a can of spinach he can "power up" with. Unfortunately, the Popeye game wasn't nearly as successful as Donkey Kong turned out to be. Check it out: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popeye_(video_game)

    Donkey Kong games have definitely been a part of my history. I remember being a kid in the 80s playing the arcade version at a local bowling alley, I spent quite a few quarters on that one! Of course I played some of the other DK games starting with the Atari 2600 version on up to the NES version. I remember when Donkey Kong Country came out, there was actually a Nintendo representative at my local Walmart allowing people to try the game in the store before it was released and that game for sure became popular with my wife and kids. It's amazing to see how Nintendo became famous with such an unusual character for a video game lol.

    There actually is a brief moment in the 1976 version of King Kong where the titular ape throws barrels of flammable material at a man with a flamethrower. (It ends how you would expect.) I can't imagine that Shigeru Miyamoto saw that version of King Kong and took note of that specific scene though.

    I know the video is old by now, but i think it'd be nice to mention that the current look and gameplay of "Donkey kong" for the arcades came to form when "Nintendo" failed an attemp to get a license for the "Popeye" characters in the hopes to create arcade machines based on the popular comic strip. After this failure "Miyamoto" changed around some character designs and game plot to create the version of the arcade we all know and love today.

    Well the theory is so wrong, because in Smash Bros Brawl when you use Snakes Codec in Shadow Moses Island, Octacon will state that the current Donkey Kong is actually Cranky Kongs Grandson, not is regular son, since the DK on the gameboy's version of Donkey Kong could be Cranky Kong in his younger days, because Donkey Kong Country didn't appear till November and all the release dates in the Gameboy version of Donkey Kong where before November and also to bebunk it more that in the trivia section on the Super Mario wiki page on the Gameboy version of Donkey Kong states that "This will be the last appearance of the Original Donkey Kong".

    Nintendo was sued by universal studios since they though they had the rights to Kong because of their movie King Kong. Just when Nintendo was on the ropes to loose the lawsuits, Kirby stepped in, pointing out that the movie studios admitted that the Kong's open domain. Thanks to Kirby, Nintendo manage to save their license and Kirby won a Boat named after DK, as well as the pink puff ball's named after him.

    I have a little bit of fact that he left out. Donkey Kong was originally known in Japan as Monkey Kong, but, as I passed to America, it was mistranslated into Donkey Kong, and the name stuck, his name soon changing to that in Japan as well. This kinda contradicts to his stuff, and I'm not sure it's true. I heard it from my school, from a huge Nintendo fanatic. Dunno if it's true.

    You should have included the best part of Donkey Kong's saga: Universal Pictures tried to sue Nintendo because they said the game infringed on their copyright on "King Kong". This lawsuit was headed by Sid Sheinberg, who'd later become infamous for trying to re-edit Terry Gilliam's "Brazil". Howard Lincoln found out Universal DIDN'T own the copyright to "King Kong", and the studio in fact went out of their way years before to prove the license was public domain. Needless ot say, Nintendo won.

    I've heard a theory that goes along with the Donkey Kong/Crankey Kong theory...that the Mario we know today is not the Mario from Donkey Kong, but his son. Mario/Jumpman had a different occupation, and a different girlfriend name. There was also a SNES game where you see Mario and Luigi as babies (but it's not revealed who their parents are). I actually think that Mario and Pauline are the parents of the Mario and Luigi of today.

    • @90bats
      @90bats 7 років тому +1

      +Akaihiryuu77 Bullcrap theory. Nintendo clearly confirms that the Mario we know today debuted in Donkey Kong for the arcade. Really? Different jobs? Mario had a lot of different jobs back in the day, not just Plumber. He originally started as a carpenter, then cement factory worker, solder at vietnam, construction worker and so much more. What's wrong with not accepting the fact Mario trying out different jobs until he finally found plumbing his match huh? Nintendo also clearly confirms that Pauline is Mario's EX-girlfriend nowadays. That clearly means Peach replace Pauline when it comes to Mario's love interest. So Mario and Jumpman are the same person. Also, keep in mind Gorillas also age faster than humans. That's why original Donkey Kong age to Cranky Kong, and Mario and Pauline are still young.

To prove this is true, try going through the buildings in the city while it's night while Jump Up, Super Star is playing, they will have the same structures from one of the levels from the arcade game. Also, have a look at this cover. 6:12 That lady Donkey Kong is holding, doesn't she look familiar to you?
