- This is the seventh Episode of my Leh Ladakh Road Trip by Car(Kia Seltos HTX 1.5 Petrol) and in this Episode (29 September, 2021) I travelled to Magnetic Hill Leh Ladakh which is a hill in India where, instead of rolling downwards, things actually go uphill. Never heard of any such thing? Well then, let me introduce you to this place called Magnetic Hill. In this video, I will be telling you about Magnetic Hill Leh Ladakh in Hindi and you will find the magnetic hill explained. A lot of people want to know about Magnetic Hill Leh Ladakh in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam but as I know Hindi I will be explaining it in Hindi.
As a matter of Fact there are 2 more magnetic hills in India, which are Tulsishyam Road in Amreli and Kalo Dungar or Black Hill in Gujarat.
Coming back to Leh Ladakh Magnetic Hill. It is a well known small stretch of road, situated about 27km from Leh City. This stop is unique as it is said that it defies the force of gravity. It is a part of the Leh-Kargil Highway, and is believed that this road attracts stationary vehicles upwards. When the engine of a car is left off, it can roll up at a speed of 20km/hr on this hill. This is due to this extraordinary phenomenon and this place has been given a lot of names such as ‘Mystery Hill’, ‘Gravity Hill’ etc. Located at a height of 14,000 ft above the sea level, the Sindhu river runs on one side of this hill.
While you will find many scientific explanations for this Magnetic Hill, but locals in the area might tell you a completely different story. Nearby villagers believe that this road once led to heaven. Deserving members used to be automatically pulled there whereas those who were undeserving never found their way to it.
The Science
There are two separate theories that can explain the reason behind this uphill movement at Magnetic Hill Leh Ladakh. The most common one says that the hill has a strong magnetic force that is the reason why it pulls vehicles in the vicinity. In fact, it is believed to be so strong that planes of the Indian Air Force avoid this route in order to avoid magnetic interference on their devices.
Another popular theory says that it is an optical illusion. As per this theory, the hill doesn't really have any magnetic force and it just creates an optical illusion in such a way that the road, which actually goes downhill, looks like as if it goes uphill. This is the reason when you see the vehicle going upslope, it is actually going downslope and does not defy the gravity.
Authorities have also put up a billboard in the area which states that the exact spot where this phenomenon can be observed. A box marked on the road actually indicates the exact point where one should park the car in neutral with engine off. From that point, you will be able to see it climbing slowly up the hill.
When To Visit
While you will find this road open throughout the year, the best time to visit Magnetic Hill is from July to October. The roads are actually clear during this period and the drive is smooth.
Things To Keep In Mind
The Magnetic Hill is known to be a part of barren region which lies about 27km from Leh. That is the reason, apart from tourists, it is actually a secluded area. While you may be able to find a couple of homestays in the area, it is still advisable to book your stay in a hotel at Leh City and drive to the Magnetic hill from there. You will also not be able to find many food joints or restaurants in the area.
The Magnetic Hill in Ladakh is believed to have a sibling in Armenia which is known as Mount Aragat. This hill also pulls the vehicles upwards when they actually goes downslope.
Sangam Point Leh
Sangam Point Leh is the confluence of Indus and Zanskar Rivers in Ladakh which in turn becomes Sindhu river. It is situated around 35km from Leh in Nimmu, on the Leh Srinagar highway. The two rivers can be clearly seen meeting at this point due to the difference in their colour. While the Indus River seems to be shiny blue, Zanskar River is actually muddy green. It is definitely a must visit site to witness.
The flow of the two rivers at Sangam is known to change according to the season. While Zanskar River is swollen and has rapids in summers, Indus River is comparatively calmer. In winters, Zanskar you will find Zanskar river slowing down and almost freezing while the flow of Indus is even lesser. The Indus is known to be one of the longest rivers in Asia and it originates in Tibet. Zanskar River is formed in the Zanskar Valley region of Kargil.
Hall of Fame Leh
Hall of Fame is a war memorial museum built by the Indian Army in memory of the brave Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives defending India in the Indo-Pak wars. The Hall of Fame museum is situated on the Leh-Kargil Road, at around 4km from the Leh city.

There's nothing magnetic or mysterious here. I had personally visited this place back in 2014 and placed my nokia lumia on the road to check inclination. It showed 2° downhill but an optical illusion made it look uphill. Look around the mountains, their slopes creates this optical illusion. Too bad I had not recorded this.
