  • This video is about how to replace a broken or burned-out blower motor in your air conditioner/furnace HVAC unit. Blower motors on amazon→ amzn.to/2wWNI38
    When you replace the motor, also change the capacitor→ amzn.to/2f0VAe1
    Just be sure to get a capacitor with matching 'uF' and 'V' values.
    This AC was making a lot of noise before it broke. If it damaged your blower wheel you will want to get a new one because it will be out of balance.

    I followed your advice, after I had ordered a new motor, and also bought a capacitor. $3.80 online. change it while the whole assembly is out. HVAC guy wanted $750 to replace blower and another $250 to clean the squirrel cage. Thank you.

    Excellent video - my A/C company wanted $2,000 to do exactly this (replace blower motor and capacitor) and another $600 to clean the blower wheel. My equipment was running fine but the seals were starting to leak and you could see some oil residue on the motor. I'm gonna replace these myself - the motor is $160 and the capacitor is another $12. Your video really helps - thanks!

    Yep cleaned my cage and it went way out of balance... had to take 3rd trip to store and buy a new one... In the future if I have to do it again I would just buy new motor, cap and cage all at once. But non of the videos told me that except this one witch I watched AFTER! Nice video.

    I found this humerus lol. The thermostat tech talk had me on the floor. Fan on or auto the Air Conditioning systems not coming on unless you switch over to Air Conditioning. Never the less just turn off power at furnace or breaker and remove blower motor. Check size and get appropriate size capacitor. When the blower motor is set secure the hub bolt to the shaft. There's no off center when the legs off the bellyband are set. Just the cage being set and secured at the hub that you failed to do. 40 years in the trade myself and I do get a kick out of these videos. Thanks for making my day lol

    Adam- thanks for the video. I try to do as much DIY as I can. Nothing in my HVAC will turn on right now and why wife heard a big clank, which makes me think the mounting points broke. I figured I would need to call an HVAC guy, but since I want to DIY everything I started looking into how to do this. Like everything else, it’s not has hard as I thought. Thanks!

    Used your video to guide my repair. Our unit was making an obnoxious squeak that started about 2 weeks ago. I suspect it was a build of dirt on the fan blades that caused a balance issue. This drove the whole assembly to resonate at speed. After a good cleaning and inspection, it seems to be nice and quiet now. I'm no HVAC guy but we do change our filters regularly. I was surprised by the amount of crud that still built up on the motor and fan blades. Probably good measure to clean every couple years. Especially if one constantly runs the fan (like we do) for air circulation. Should extend its life.

    Great video Adam. Specially the suggestions to take photos of the wiring. I would also add to take photos of the motor schematics on the original and new motor. I got my new blower motor in and fully installed and the colors on the new PSC motor were completely different colors. I had to start over.

    Your wobble is due to the rubber bushings not the squirrel cage I think. They are allowing for to much movement of the motor.

      It cost me $650 which includes $150 for the blower motor. My guy also recharged the R22, which is a real expensive refrigerant. He had to climb up in the attic of my office building and do it in the Heat of the summer. It was well worth it to me.

    One piece of advice for yourself and those watching would be to NOT put the lock washer between the bolt head and rubber bushing surface. Better on the other side, where there is the housing's metal surface and the nut. The purpose of the lock washer is to keep the nut from vibrating loose. Also better would be to place a flat washer between the bolt head and rubber bushing surface.

    Thanks for video. Though I can't help but wonder if after market mount with the "rubber bushings" was part of the problem causing it to be "out of balance". I think you needed a more firm mount that affixed the motor firmly to the housing. One would think the rubber would help soften any rattle or vibration, but in reality it could have provided too much give....just a guess.

    • @firstaid4film
      @firstaid4film 4 роки тому +1

      L Dlink This is exactly right. It’s the new mounts not the wheel. The rubber bushings are allowing the motor to shake and oscillate.

    Very good video. I wish that I could watch your "other video" about replacing the squirrel cage. I don't see it in your list of videos. Di you make another one? I have the problem with my A/C where it sounds like it is rattling excessively in the squirrel cage: I am guessing. I am just working through the steps of learning how to do this. So expensive to hire people to do it, so I have to learn how to do a lot of this stuff myself. You make it look easy and give me the confidence. THANKS!!!

    Thank you for a informative video upload. I do have a question. at the end it was vibrating a lot because you said the blower wheel was not aligned. did you change the blower wheel ? did it quit vibrating ? I am facing the same problem after replacing the motor ( not OEM ) vibrates too much and it can be heard in the bedroom. The unit is in the attic.

    I have a Bryant plus 80t furnace + AC in my house. It was installed in 2003 and I have the original furnace company that installed it as my maintenance company. They come out 2x a year and so far, the system works perfectly. For repairs, I have had the furnace capacitor changed 2x and the AC capacitor changed 1x. For the yearly cost of my gold membership ($20.00 per month) and small maintenance repairs, it is much cheaper than an entire system.

    Thank you Adam for posting such a good video. I've never worked on a furnace before but you gave me the confidence to give it a try!. My furnace blower motor went out last week and I removed the motor and housing and bench tested the motor as you described on another video. I have another motor on its way but I have a question about the capacitor . I found one online that is similar to mine ( 15 uf 370 v 50/60 hz 70C) . Is there anything else I need to know before I order the capacitor? Also, when I install the capacitor, do I need to short it out first , before I handle it?

    • @AdamDIY
      @AdamDIY  7 років тому +3

      Hi David. The uF and V are the values you need to match, don't worry about the other specs. You can short the old one to be safe, the new one will not come with a charge so don't worry about shorting it. Best of luck!

    I noticed there was an extra fan speed wire (yellow). Should that be taped off with electrical tape or attach it to "spare 2"?

    • @stevecanny1583
      @stevecanny1583 8 років тому

      +Jason Nhan Just attach it to Spare. Those connections don't connect electrically to anything, they just allow you to "park" the motor wires you don't need. There are multiple wires, one for each speed the motor can run at. Often White is the common wire, then Red, Blue, Yellow, and Black, in that order, for slower to faster. AC will generally take the highest fan speed (Black) and heat takes one of the others, but generally heat uses a lower speeds like Red, possibly Blue. Heat works better on slower speeds.

He didn’t know you needed a long Hex key and to reach through the fan blades to turn the Hex screws. He cut the shaft on the old motor, to get to the Hex screw. Needless to say, he needed a new a Furnace, the heat exchanger was cracked on every cell.

      Patty, heat it up with fire. That should help get it off. Or call someone with mechanical skills like a hvac contractor to repair the issue.

    When I turn my heat on it smell like metal. All my research lead me to believe it's the motor that need replace. If I still follow your step or should I just call a professional to do the job?

      It just depends on your specific skill level. Also if I had the money, I would not fix anything myself but just pay someone else to do it! It just depends on your specific situation.

      It could just be your blower motor capacitor. 1:02 it's worth checking. See my latest video on how to test a capacitor.

    I turned it off last night ...now it works. what could happen

      It could be several problems. It should have a flashing LED code when it shut off. But it will stop flashing once the system resets. Next time it turns off check the LED and count the flashes.

      David Lee, your cheap, dumb butt needs to call in a hvac tech. Sounds like your unit is low on refrigerant. Hope this helps.
