Hawaiian music at its best! Pure chicken skin performance by the late Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (IZ) at the 1996 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards.
Listen to this message straight from the heart of Braddah IZ. On the biggest evening for Hawaiian music, the Makaha Sons decides to join Braddah Iz on stage and ho'oponopono all that had happened in their past. As I watched this broadcasted on KFVE I remember being overwhelmed with emotions. It was basically both sides saying sorry through their actions and voices. On June 26, 1997 Israel Kamakawiwo'ole died.
Your music lives on Braddah IZ. Hawaiian Music lovers I share this one with you all. Malama pono from www.pipeline2paradise.com -Pu'ukani

Aloha au iâ Mauna Kea, i ke anu o ke ahiahi
Love I Mauna Kea (meaning, White Mountain, referring to mountain on the island of Hawai`i), in the cold of the evening.
Ho'olono, ho'olono, ho'olono i ka leo ka makani
Listen, listen, listen to the voice of the wind
Keaukaha nô e ka wahi.
Keaukaha indeed, the place.
(E hana hou i ka paukû hope)
(Repeat last verse)
Leah Elam I think people were crying for various reasons; knowing that he was almost on his death bed might be one, but mending the rift between him and his brothers was probably a big part of it! In addition, there are probably very few people in the audience that could actually understand the Hawaiian language...and some of his comments were in that language (as well as some "pidgin" expressions!). I've always loved and respected Iz and his music, and he died much too soon, at the age of 38 years old!
I spent 5 years in Hawaii, but he was just a baby when I arrived, but learned to appreciate his talents many years later!
The Hawaii state flag flew at half-staff on July 10, 1997, the day of Kamakawiwoʻole's funeral. His koa wood coffin lay in state at the state capitol building in Honolulu. He was the third person in Hawaiian history to be awarded this honor, and the only one who was not a government official. Hopefully, that will help you understand why some folks were crying!
His singing gives a feeling of peace. I just recently heard his music and now I am hooked for good. Such a beautiful man, so sad he left us so early. He will never be forgotten. xxx
I was lucky enough to have grown up listening to his music back when him, Skippy, Moon, John, and Jerome would play every Sunday at our church in Nanakuli, HI. The Christian music they would put forth will always be a blessing to me and my family and the people who attended the Faith, Hope, & Charity church. We were by his side when he passed on and he will never be forgotten. What he said about "putting Jesus in your heart" is so true. Thank you for continuing to bless us with your music. Aloha
IZ heals my soul with my tears with his heavenly music. RIP IZ

I did not discover this beautiful singer until now. Thank Jesus for this gift, I have a new favorite. This singer sings to the heart of my heart. Greetings from Wendo of the Sami people, Norway

I remembered this day i cried and still do when i see this video we miss you braddah IZ your words will be remembered forever.....
I found Kamakawiwo to have been great. I wish I hear of him sooner. The world lost a great man. He is a Hawaiian profit. God must have this guy sing everyday in Haven. Thank you Hawaii! Aloha from the South East Coast of the main land.
IZ and Teresa Teng, the two most beautiful voices to ever sing a song...gone forever, never to be replaced but never forgotten. They will be listened to as long as their recordings can be played. You don't have to understand the languages they sing in (Hawaiian (IZ), English (IZ &TT), Chinese (TT), Japanese (TT)...the beauty of their voices will hook you. Check out TT on UA-cam, esp. her Japanese and English songs with her and IZ serenading you'll be in heaven.

I so miss this man..... When I heard what he said at 1:53 to 2:07 , I had to start clapping, as I know now where he is. He is in the presence of Jesus. So open your heart too., invite Jesus to come in, clean you, and be born again, and you too will know LOVE .....and one day hear IZ sing again....
no words to describe the talent and performance of this gentleman. Very moving. Brought tears to my eyes.
Dis Hawaiian Braddah will always be da true Hawaiian supah Man. He beleived in what hawaii was before, and what it should be in the future. He representd Hawaiians in the most positive way, and that makes me proud to be Hawaiian. I beleive all of Hawaii should look to him as a motivation to keep Hawaii the way it is. His voice, and his music shall always be missed. He legacy and messege lives on through the Keiki and Kupuna of our Hawaiian lands.
