@@chipcook5346 ... Do you know why they were called the "greatest generation"? I don't think you do, and that's fine. It's not because they won a war, it was because that entire generation of Americans came together for the war effort. House wives built tanks, the Ford factory build bombers, ordinary people all came together. That has not happened since. It wasn't just the soldiers and sailors they are referring to it's literally that entire generation.

@@chipcook5346 ... it’s pretty simple, “greatest generation” refers to World War II and the combined efforts of an entire generation of people. That does not imply they were perfect people as individuals, but collectively when called upon they were unified.

I am 68 years old now, And the early 60's I remember so many of the veterans from that era. Armless, legless young men who struggled with the prosthetic they were fitted with. One of my friends at that time ,his father lost arm clear off at the shoulder.
Both my father, air craft maintenance, mother had been an army nurse during the war, she had to take care of so many casualties, And her husband was in a German pow camp ,having been shot down, he was involved in one hell of a fight in the skies. Eventually the weight of the war took its toll on her sanity and she cracked. She was discharged and sent home. She did reunite with her husband when he came home, the marriage lasted about 2 years give or take.
What I learned from my early years is that for the people who serve , the war lives on in their lives. The memories never go away. I have had scout masters, clergy, and neighbors, who all played a part in that war. Both of my grand fathers served in the armed forces in WW 1. One served in the navy running the north Atlantic, on the USS Albany, and the other served in the US army. he was severely wounded And spent quite a bit of time in a hospital tent.
When I see the crap that goes on now in our government, I get pretty well fired up. I have recorded ancestors who served in the continental army , the civil war, first world war, 2nd world war, Korean war, and my brother and I served during ( not in) the Viet Nam war.

It's so amazing how these guy's were built, and although it's a weird thing to say, it is probably good that (ALL) of these guy's probably suffered to at least some extent in the Great Depression, because that probably mentally trained them, or at least helped them mentally a bit for the horrors and anguish to come in WW2. Can you imagine the kids of today having to go through this? I sure cannot. On another note I think hearing these stories is important for us today, and although probably painful for the soldiers to telling them, I would guess it also helps. Hat's off to these great men!

    Happy birthday Mr. Foreman.
Thank you so much for the sacrifices you made, for the pain you endured, and the agony of watching your shipmates suffer. You guys saved the world and ultimately triumphed over evil and made the world a better place. May our country be worthy of the sacrifices that so many of you made, and may your creator continue to hold you close and comfort you forever and ever. You deserve nothing less for what you endured as a young man. Thank You.

This veterans memory is amazing and so accurate to detail. What a hero!!
My dad was in the SeaBees and landed with the Marines on Guadalcanal. While he was being taken to the shore via a Higgins boat he noticed that he didn’t have his gun which he thought that one of the other soldiers grabbed his as well by accident. He asked his CO where was he to get another one. His CO said that they’d find a few on shore which he did. I asked if he killed anyone after landing his response was that he returned fire when fired upon he had enough to do trying his best to stay alive. He said that what he say during the first 48 hours of death and destruction would last a lifetime

He was hit with shrapnel ~3 weeks later above his left knee. When he got to the hospital ship one doctor wanted to amputate however my dad saw a doctor walk by that he knew and asked for a second opinion which the doctor said that he thought that they could save his leg which they did. After which my dad continued throughout the South Pacific. His last battle was at Leyte Gulf.

    Dear Sir,
I take great inspiration from the history you and others from your generation tell. You, as did many others, joined with all kinds of ideas and reasons why. You followed the call to face a tyranny that was intent on spreading its' control across the world and would have succeeded. May we all learn how to never give up and continue to fight in conditions that many would simply give up and die. You are part of one of the greatest generation of heroes that America owes continued gratitude to.

I've read a few books about the naval battles of Guadalcanal and the South Pacific in WW2. There are few naval battles in human history that equal the incredible carnage and destruction that took place in places like Ironbottom Sound. Both sides suffered terrible casualties and numerous sunken ships. Any man who survived like Mr. Foreman has my complete admiration and respect.
