Never raced speedway, but I raced flat track and TT (not the IoM type) here in the States on a 750cc Trackmaster Triumph. That was several weeks ago...well...many months ago. OK, ok, many decades ago. But I still own the bike and my steel shoe and even my leathers...which apparently have shrunk as they don't zip up anymore. Ran on half-mile ovals and TT Steeplechase courses like Ascot Part in Gardena, California. But these guys on speedway bikes were so much fun to watch, totally sideways, backing 'er into the turns.... Similar sport but so different in many ways.
The smell of CastrolR. Almost the sound of back in the 60s at Halifax Dukes, except we were fortunate enough to hear the motors then without silencers Love dit Thank you Keith
I raced in the mid 90's, just about the time the new lay down motors emerged. I had an older Jawa bike, probably from the 80's. It was certainly fun, but I couldn't afford a new bike at the time. Great to see Dan run her around the track, wish I could have rode as fast as him in my day, lol!!
Hans the man would be proud, I had a GR500 back in the day best looking motor ever. The GM was such a refined engine the poor old GR500 couldn't compete.
I remember the speedway races, early 70s sitting next to a guy named Ed Justice who was hawking a new product called J.B. weld.. I wonder if it ever went anywhere?
Great video Dan, It didnt surprize me you blowing it and a bike of that age and a lad of your calibur riding it 🤣🤣🤣 You made it look so easy to ride having never riden one when the laydown engines came out some riders struggled because the centre of gravity is different on them and i thought you may find it on the upright with it being different but no you were like a duck to water well done Dan. The true british goat👍👍👍
Woohoo :D An old Godden. I've always loved watching solos. As a young fella I always tried to see our kiwi Ivan and his team battling it out with the various Brits and Europeans on TV back quite a few decades (some of it might have been in black and white to!! LoL). A bloke I know of over here collected many many programs from your various UK tracks in those eras. He's long gone but I still haven't managed to get a good look at them. Armor up, injuries add up and get painful when you get older :) I didn't buy a cap but I subscribed, I hope that helps the cause a little bit. Cheers from New Zealand.
When I was still at school in NZ,me and a few mates would hitch up to Mystery Creek from the King Country, just to see Ivan wipe the clocks of the competitors. But back after WW2 My Old dad and his mates would drive there in a Austin 7... 😁😁
Me and the Waddy Brothers brought that Godden from Denmark in 2021. We got the history from Godden. Let Andy Waddy fix it. We brough6 bikes home from Denmark. The GS on the Godden stands for Gunnar Svendsen, an ex Holsted Tigers rider from years ago.
I used to go to Halifax to watch the Dukes when Eric Bocock rode I have seen the worlds best many ex world champions someone mentioned castrol R we could smell that as we got off the bus as the mechanics prepared the bikes for the races those were the good days of my youth
Bewley fan from Northern California. Got to see Leon Madsen win the Grand Prix in Vojens in 2023 with an old racing buddy. What a spectacular night that was!! I loved Being in Denmark....
You look like a natural! Now find a buddy and try the sidecars! Used to take the family to Auburn, CA USA Fast Fridays Raceway pretty regularly and loved every minute of it. This type of racing doesn't get as much recognition but it's one of the most exciting to watch.
Does anyone remember the old black and white television show "Father Knows Best"? Billy Gray, the actor who played Bud, was a racer of bikes like this one. I forget which brand he raced. I just know I always wanted to do this with a bike based on the Maico 501 (1975 variety, not the new 2025) engine. I also wanted to do ice racing (the bikes are similar, but the tires have long and evil metal spikes to dig into the ice. If you don't remember Father Knows Best, you must remember him as the kid in The Day the Earth Stood Still. The good one with Michael Rennie. Turns out he did a lot more than that. If you're a guitar player, Gray invented the F-1 Pick. I took one look at it and was like, instant "V8 Moment." Most practical and helpful guitar pick ever invented. All his other inventions, too. Wow.
Looks like one of steves old bikes lol thats how they shud be loud and cover every fucker in gravel as it was when me and my dad use to watch steve and andy and dezz and sen at workington the oxo was good hi from millers in austrailia
I always thought I could be pretty good at this type of racing if I wasn't 6' 3" 250 lbs. It always pissed me off the 5' 8 145 lb guys had the advantage.
Bet you it doesn't make any difference what way the engine is. I remember Steve Daw on his old upright used to beat top riders on their newer laydowns. Plus, most of the bikes in the upright class now are just converted laydown engines anyway. Bet you, if a top rider converted their latest laydown engine to upright they'd still ride just as well.
Just ride with same technique as now. They don’t really feel much different, just a bit smoother and slower, granted it’s probably not the fastest upright ever built tho.
@danbewleyDITV looking back at upright racing. I watched speedway in The 70s. There was so much effort just to get the back wheel out. It was very physical. You don't even put your foot on the track.
@@danbewleyDITV SURELY lower centre of gravity on modern bikes changes the style...?? I would expect you to be unfazed tho - maybe a JAP next time?? Maybe a GP round on uprights???
Odd. Raced speedway in my youth and roadracing last 10 years. As a spectator, speedway is more fun, you see the whole track and see different race lines. You know who wins and who is forth. On roadracing you only sees a small part of the track and after a couple of laps you don't know who is in the lead as some slower riders are passed by the top riders. Of course more fun to ride than watch.
Speedway is such a beautiful thing to watch.
And its a lot harder than it looks
100% agree.

Great to see the old upright ridden as it should be
Interesting to see a modern day world class rider on an old style bike, brilliant comparison between old and new

Looks like a blast, I'd love to try that! My motto: Hey man, if it has two wheels & a motor, count me in! Brakes optional.
i loved my old jawa back in the 80s, training school at hackney on a saturday... that upright brought back some great memories, thank you dan

When I rode flat track bikes we still had full size gas tanks! That’s how long ago I drove them 😂 fell in love with the power slide as a kid 👍
This is NOT “flat track”… For a Speedway Bike, the fuel tank IS “full size”… Pay attention mate.
that was stunning, proper job, well done
Amazing to watch this sport. Its even more amazing on ice. Where they achieve unmatched lean angles in the moto world
Would be great to have the castrol R smell bk again 👍
Put a horn on a jellyfish with that smell!!
I remember it well
I thought it was just
ME missing the Castrol smell.
R-30, or R-40?
Recall buying a plastic bottle of the stuff forty years ago, R-30, and they had one of these (speedway) bikes in the store!

Old bikes is qjere it's at! Would great to see todays top riders having a series on old bikes.
Love the uprights I have a 1986 Jawa 897 which is awsome unfortunately it don’t get ridden
Half mile track please...or Indy mile...good stuff
Nothing like the smell of Castrol in the morning. Speedway looks to be man versus gravity.
Make Uprights Great Again!!
A modern upright for junior or amateur speedway would be perfect, get rid of 250s and keep lay downs for professional speedway
@@danbewleyDITVHey man, if it has two wheels & a motor, count me in! Brakes optional.
I had a go riding one of these and I have ridden dirt bikes before but I near crapped my pants on these things.
would love to see the time difference between the two can you do a timed race on both bikes?
Please help me, what are the different speedway bikes? Thanks!🙏

Don't let this happen again. Next time, we'll have to call the fun police on you. If you do, however, try a British legend, the Weslake.
Are u doing the ben fund at Oxford in the new year?
Is that a 1/4 mile track?
