2012: I present this video. Mega Man 3 has been conquered.
The very idea of a single segment Mega Man 3 perfect run used to be preposterous to me. I knew it was possible, but I figured the game was far too long, and there were too many annoying spots that came late in the game. I recently took a closer look at the game, coming up with any tricks and exploits that could be implemented to mitigate a number of problem areas. After some time, I discovered enough methods to actually consider going for a perfect run.
Dozens and dozens of hours went into attempts at this. I learned a lot of nuances along the way that helped out my play as the days went on. Doc Quickman is by far the biggest worry of the entire run. He can be very hard to dodge, and he takes 7 hits with the gemini laser or search snakes. I got pretty good at perfecting him semi-consistently in practice, but there's a lot more at stake in an actual run. Going straight for him after defeating the 8 robot masters takes just over 30 minutes with my playstyle. It's not
uncommon to be a little nervous, and that makes one play worse. Even then, he can just be completely unfair and offer a pattern that you have no chance of dodging. I played so many runs where I went for Doc Quick immediately after the regular stages, and sure I could get by him every now and then. However, I found that as soon as I got past him, my play suffered considerably. The parts that are normally a lock would just constantly end my runs. Countless attempts later, I decided to save him for last. That was a good choice I think.
Sure Doc Quickman is a huge bastard, but none of the others are anything to sneeze at either. Doc Air is perhaps the second biggest worry. Rush jet negates most of the threat he presents, but he still got me more times than I'd have liked. My Doc Crash strategy is perhaps strange, but surprisingly it has never let me down in a run. His unpredictability regarding his jumps makes fighting him any other way unappealing. Doc Flash was a huge concern at first, but the strategy I came up with proved to be 100% effective in runs. Doc Bubble can also be nerve-wracking. The trick with him is to get below his rising bullet shots. I use pausing and unpausing to fall slower so I can get under the shots safely if he launches too many bubbles. Using this trick means you don't have to jump as high, increasing the distance between you and those awful spikes. It's a fool-proof method in practice, but he's got me a couple times in runs. Doc Wood isn't too hard to abuse with the rush jet. And Doc Heat... I hate him so much. That initial attack seems so easy to avoid in practice, but it's gotten me at least 4 times in runs. It got so frustrating I finally had to start with the alternate Shadow Man stage first. Doc Metal isn't too bad, but he got me once.
Mega Man 3 has really disappointing and easy Wily stages. However, at this point in the run absolutely everything scares me. I had only made it to the Wily stages once in all of my previous attempts (got hit by panicking against the devil in said run). The turtles are pretty much a joke of a boss. The yellow devil is normally very easy to dodge, but my shakiness was climbing up there. The hit boxes on the bouncing parts are way bigger than they should be, so the rush jet is essential. The clones were one of my biggest fears of the Wily stages. They can be killed very fast, but you also have to move and attack fast to kill them off as soon as possible. No chokes so far... The junk golems' attacks in Wily 4 are easy enough to lead away, even under extreme stress.
Beyond all odds I reached the rematch room. Needle Man only takes 4 shots from the laser, but he is very random and hard to dodge at times. This one was a narrow win. Shadow Man absolutely requires rush jet abuse to defeat consistently. Still jittery, I take him out as well. Spark Man was still a slight worry. He can be killed very quickly with his own weapon, but he can still cause a panic if he goes straight for the bottom left at the start of the fight. I breathed a sigh of relief at this point. The last robot master rematches were handled well enough. Wily Machine 3 is very exploitable, and Gamma is a big joke.
In the end... I finally did it. I don't know what to say. It probably shouldn't have taken a fourth as long as it did before I succeeded, but it's all over with now. Thank god. I don't think I'll ever surpass this.
I hope you enjoyed the run. This was a single segment run with no save states or slowdown used.

You CAN use Top spin on Shadow Man but only if he has 1 hp left. It won't hurt you. His other weakness is his own power. But you can only use it when you're in Wily's castle.

I like the way you had fun during this play-through. You shot to the music, you jumped up and down and slid around before boss battles. Not only was the play-through epic in that you took no damage whatsoever, but you made it fun to watch as well. Kudos

For those of you who are wondering why he’s jumping during Rush Jet, it’s to save energy.
Rush Jet’s energy only drains when you stand on it in Mega Man 3.
Hell no. I could never do this. Mega Man 3 is hard enough as it is with some of the level design and the ludicrous amount of lag & slow down. I can beat it easy enough but to do a no damage run? That's unreal. Impressive.

Mega Man 3 was the only one MM game where you can freely move the Rush jet. It's a nice tactic btw.

Just finished this game again since I re-bought it and played it for the first time since the 90´s. I never died however, I got hit a lot (and used E-tanks) but you sir just went berserk with a no damage run. Great display of strategy, nice run!
What an absolutely stunning run. Trying to beat my way through Mega Man 3 right now, so I did some searching and this is the gold standard by far. Your reaction time is ridiculously quick, everything about this is mesmerising. Good show mate.
Man I forgot how OP rush jet was in these earlier games, I just beat 9, 10, and 11 and the rush jet energy just depletes so much faster. Love that dog regardless ❤
Try to jump while using Rush Jet. It only consumes energy if Megaman stands on it. If you jump, you delay the energy consumption while Rush keeps flying underneath Megaman

I think mega man villains inspired one punch man
MM3 is the best classic Mega Man. Better controls, balanced weapons, Rush, Protoman and the awesome slide all add a lot to the series. I also don't see a problem with the level design and in fact enjoy the Wily stages WAY more than the ones in 2. Sure they're tricky but Rush is there to help if you get stuck.

It's true. The Wily Wars version of Mega Man 3 for Sega Genesis / Mega Drive is a lot more closer to what the NES version would have been.

Very nice run, I grew up playing this game as a child. It was the first Mega Man game I ever owned. I have to say, the robot masters in Mega Man 3, in my opinion are definitely the hardest. Needle Man is a big pain in the ass! Way to go on the perfect no damage run!

The only boss I fear is Quick Man when I try a "no damage" run. His jumps are unpredictable and the boomerang attack makes it difficult to make calculated jumps.
Anything else is easy to get through without getting hit.
It takes true dedication to perfectionize your gamer reflexes so you know exactly when and where to shoot and jump, so you can play through an entire game without taking a single hit. Congratulations!

Seriously though, i consider myself a veteran(but i learned some dirty tricks still) and i've never seen such a performance. That was awesome. How the Rush Jet fuel and soup crackers it can be run without damage i cannot fathom. Sick ride 👌👍🤘

Going at levels/bosses without their weaknesses and not knowing how useful Rush Jet could be makes a lot of this game unfun. Replaying it recently made it my least favorite of the original 6.
Impressive...but something doesn't add up about your Shadow Man battle. How is your RJ power draining that slow while Shadow Man's health is draining fairly fast? I tried this method and it was the other way around for me.
If you're jumping while using rush jet in this game, the energy will deplete much slower.

I just realized that Top Man has 1- or 2-wheel roller feet...also that Hard Man is one of very few times that the enemy's version of their weapon is noticeably smaller than yours. Hella nice run, love the creative uses of rush jet among other things.

You must be actually megaman to pull a perfect run like this. The game is so hard to not get hit. Against the secrets bots I dunno how you pulled it off with no damage.
It definitely took a lot of practice and attempts. Persistence pays off.
Very well done I have both megaman1 and 3 new carts both in cases and fully intact but I'm thinking about trading Megaman1 for something that I could actually enjoy and not as difficult to beat like knights of the round for SNES the elevator gaps in the gutsman stage is where I die the most and the reappearing blocks are so annoying. I'm mostly an Retro videogamer but god is Megaman1 so unfairly difficult did they do that on purpose?

Really nice run! I never even considered using Rush Jet to beat Shadow Man, Top Spin was the weapon that was his weakness. It was just ridiculously hard to use as a weapon. And Needle Cannon worked on Spark man too? I remember Shadow Blade being his weakness. Haven't played MM3 in over 25 years. Wish they'd remake them all with updated graphics!

With the Needle Cannon used against Spark Man despite the difference in damage weakness versus the Shadow Blade, he'd only have to fire the needles (if you wanna call 'em that) in a straight line -- As well as using the Rush Jet against Shadow Man, epic strats!
On Snake Man's clouds I like how you jump right before. Stupid game glitches and makes you fall if you're close to the edge when the cloud pops up!
I admire the strategy that you used but I can't figure out how your Rush Jet was nearly empty when you first started fighting Airman and then suddenly full as soon as the fight commenced. How did you accomplish that without a save?
My Rush Jet is full at the start of the fight. It just appears to have lower energy for a brief period due to screen flicker and UA-cam cutting frames.
Whenever Proto/Break man appears it's almost creepy because how you hear a low, melancholy whistle then this freaky guy in a red sniper joe mask and a sheild starts jumping and throwing shots at you until he finally dissapers and the floor blows up.
It's a tough call between 9 and 10. However, including hacks and fan games I think Minus Infinity is the best Mega Man anything.

Well don't get me wrong bro. I just noticed a few things that I would do differently. It was still quite impressive. Plus I've always made it about my end time. So I guess I really don't have much of a place to say anything.
