Many of the inhabitants of the German speaking south Tyrol (Bozen or Bolzano) were fanatical Nazis and helped the post war rat lines to operate for many years enabling Nazi refugees to escape to South America.
A well-known example of an Austro-Hungarian who ended up an Italian citizen was the WWI submarine ace Captain von Trapp. He turned down the offer of a naval commission and declined to perform at Hitler's birthday concert before he and his family escaped to Italy and from there to London and the USA to resume their musical career.

Interesting how war criminals often try to dismiss their crimes the same way. Former Hungarian Prime Minister Gyula Horn (in office 1994-98) was once a member of a Communist paramilitary, the "pufaykamen" (named after the Soviet military jacket they wore) and participated in several murders during the retributions after the 1956 uprising. During his tenure as PM, he was confronted by a journalist about his past, and he famously replied: "Yes, I was a pufaykaman. So what?" He was not only never brought to justice (and none of his fellow travelers) but today there's a plaque commemorating his "contributions to a united Europe" in Brussels, in the entrance hall of the European Parliament. And you thought Priebke's escape was amazing...
Well, one quick look at Horn’s “early life” background will tell you exactly why he managed to escape, whilst flagrantly rubbing it in everyone’s faces. But, as usual, no one ever wants to talk about that. Remember, though, they don’t really have ethno-religious privilege; it’s all just a “cOnSpiRaCy tHeOry”.

I, personally knew the first American military doctor into the cave (salt mine) after the discovery of the massacre. Most if not all were killed with a single shot to the base of the skull . The Germans used m96 mauser pistols because of their 10 round capacity. As a doctor in North Africa and the Italian campaign, he said it was the worst thing he ever saw!
I recently found out that the father of someone I know was one of the physicians from outside Germany asked to be on the Katyn Commission. There's a photo of him online with some of the other medical investigators as they are placing one of the nearly mummified corpses onto a table in the field during the exhumation of the bodies. Look up Katyn Commission and Getty Images. Only about half the victims were discovered while the Germans held the territory so after the war at Nuremberg the Soviets only put the Germans on trial for killing "11,000" while they knew the true number was over 20,000.
Happily aided by the Catholic Church and Red Cross et al. Also the US government used them to help build rockets and missiles. The good old “land of the free”. Such bullshit.
I don’t think there are many left alive. A 20 year old (who would be pretty junior) during Op Reinhardt would be over 100 now. The biggest one that got away with it was Heinrich Muller. There has never been any forensic evidence of his death. If anyone could invent a new life it would have been the head of the Gestapo. I believe that he would have most likely lived out a peaceful life with a fake ID in some German village . Dying sometime in the mid 1970s as he was 45 at the end of the war. Remember, this was the guy who could easily manufacture all the documentation he required, no need for counterfeit in his case. He probably had access to all the funds he required to live a comfortable discreet lifestyle.
Demanding the extradition of Thatcher over the _General Belgrano_ is very cheeky. While the British made it clear they would sink ships entering the exclusion zone, that doesn’t rule out engaging legitimate military targets anywhere else, and the Belgrano was absolutely a legitimate target.
23:22 Significant error in regard to the Belgrano, it was not outside the 'defined area of engagement', there was no such provision during the Falklands War. The Argentines knew that the ship was a target wherever it was, Captain Hector Bonzo of the Belgrano stated this and a head of the Argentine Navy wrote to Clarin, a national newspaper there to say that the ship was a legitimate target and it dishonoured the memory of the dead to say that they were murdered when they had died during their duty. There was a self-declared 'Total Exclusion Zone' of 200 NM around the Falklands, but this was a warning to ALL shipping that the Royal Navy would attack first within that zone any ship on the assumption that it was hostile. The Argentines knew all their ships were targets, they unfortunately did not take proper precautions for an attack, resulting in more deaths than might have otherwise occurred.
He could be speaking from the perspective of the Argentine authorities who had taken issue with the sinking and wanted to lambast Britain in the public eye. I like the correction though.
@@F5xToRefresh But they haven't the captain of the Belgrano said he was a legitimate target and the head of the Argentine Navy (some years later) said the same.
Imagine if a nation could keep its warships outside an "exclusion zone" and just zip in make an attack and zip back out. It's a ludicrously illogical idea. It's surprising how it's not obvious to otherwise seemingly intelligent people.
An excellent analysis of the events, particularly shining a light on the Nuremburg defence & the 1920s U boat precedent. I'm amazed at why the Argentine government of the time (early 2000s) went out of its way to prevent the extradition of a non-Argentine citizen - talk about picking a fight with nothing to gain & everything to lose (& that's after the Falklands). The arrogance of that old Nazi right up until his last breath was pulpable. All things considered, the world's a better place with one less Nazi in it!
The comment about British officers not doing such things makes me want to mention the Cossacks, White Russians, Soviet prisoners and their families would were forcibly deported to the Soviet Union under false preferences under the oath of safekeeping by their British captors. The Soviets then started their 'work' in the sight of the British at the handover point. The excuse the officers who enacted the order from Churchhill to betray prisoners and civilians to death was that as officers they were subordinate to their orders and not law or honour. It must be acknowledged that a good deal of the supposed international law was victors justice, and at the time very directly treated as such, the allies were generally quite arbitrary in it's application, their own men and actions, politically expedient criminals and acts which were troublesome to go after (notably sexual crimes) were very much dealt with as a PR problem rather than a legal question. We must also admit at a certain point that the Russians are the focus of criticism in this direction largely because their archives are much more open to investigation by historians, if we had access to British and American classified files I'm sure it would reveal many uncomfortable truths. Which is of course while they will never be released so long as same system remains in power and using the wartime narratives for justification.
Yes, the western allies almost literally acquitted all charges of war crimes by their own soldiers, not to mention "Keelhaul" and many other such cases. Although I am of the opinion that many documents that you mentioned in your last paragraph will be released as soon as the people responsible for the crimes hidden can either be verified to be dead or assumed to be. I wouldn't say that wartime narratives need to be used for any justification after, say, 2030 or so. A hundred years is also a standard amount of time that some of the more incendiary documents can be classified, so we need to look for 2045. The ones that won't be released after that will never be. I think that we need to remember that exactly like the Nazi system, in this case this system with the classified documents exists solely to ensure that criminals avoid justice, not any principles or necessarily anything much deeper than that.
Russian and Soviet State archives of all kinds, military and civilian , were open for a couple of years under the Yeltsin regime but closed again when Putin came to power.
As for Soviet Russian war crimes none have ever been prosecuted. A leading example is the Katyn murders of over 22 000 Polish POWs in April 1940 during the period when Russia was an active ally of Nazi Germany.
I've read about this massacre, but no information was given about why it occurred. Thank you for providing the foundational information. I wonder if the Partisans could have used the explosives more effectively by disrupting transportation and communications infrastructure. Would such a diversion have muted the maniacal retribution by the SS and SD?
11:22 From Wikipedia (not David Irving): "The invention of mobile gas chambers, based on adapted vans with the storage compartment sealed and exhaust redirected inside, was attributed to Soviet NKVD officer Isai D. Berg. Starting in 1937, he supervised execution of prisoners by gassing them in trucks."
That's the MO... cover up your own crimes by saying it was your enemies. Just like basically all of "Germany's crimes", we just have to take the Soviet Union and other communists at their word. Ironic when we know they did 10x worse.
Fascinating as ever Dr Felton; at the risk of being a pedant there wasn’t a ‘defined area of engagement’; the Maritime Exclusion Zone (MEZ) was introduced 12APR82; this was relayed to the Argentines 23APR82 via the Swiss embassy and the British Government clarified ‘that any Argentine ship or aircraft that was considered to pose a threat to British forces anywhere in the South Atlantic would be attacked’. Belgrano, which I believe was the USS Phoenix and had survived Pearl Harbour, met her demise 02MAY82.. Argentine Rear-Admiral Allara who was in charge of the task force of which the Belgrano was a part said, "After that message of 23 April, the entire South Atlantic was an operational theatre for both sides. We, as professionals, said it was just too bad that we lost the Belgrano" So for Carlos Menem to liken Thatcher to Priebke is ill informed, asinine and offensive; in keeping with much about Menem and many Argentinian leaders.
I recall a joke at the time - "Who won the Falklands War? Argentina, because they got a change of government and we didn't." The real winners, of course, were the Falkland Islanders. They were rescued from beneath the heel of the jackboot. And we should feel good about having achieved that. Cheers

Walking down the via Rasella one can still see the bullet holes in the facades of the houses overlooking the street, as the surviving soldiers of the SS company immediately opened fire - quite randomly - at the windows of the surrounding buildings. Some portions of the walls are literally riddled with bullets. As I understand it, the facades have never been restored on purpose, as a memento.

There is no moral equivalency to the Nazis’ industrial genocide. Nor the fact that they were the aggressor imposing draconian murderous regimes on the nations they conquered. Contrast Nazi policy with the Marshall Plan that lead to the rise and wealth of Western Europe.

Many of the Italians who fought in that Regiment ended up settling down in Bavaria and the State of Hessen in Germany.

And you thought Priebke's escape was amazing...
its ok if your on the left , liberal , commie or a democrat you get a pass ya the world is such a better place for them ! the left that is ! NOT !
Very interesting. That is worthy of greater publicity. It seems the left are never punished.

The "ski resort" town of Bariloche, Argentina has had visits by several U.S. Presidents, according to Harry Cooper of the Sharkhunters web site. Mr. Cooper has also stated that Kurt Debus, the former head of operations at NASA's Cape Canaveral (also at Peenemunde during WW II) held a secret meeting there in Florida with two former high-ranking Germans: "Gestapo" Muller & Hans Kammler. This was detailed in a book co-authored by Mr. Cooper: "Space: the Final Frontier".
So Muller[ Mueller] survived the war then?

Just be patient, brand new stories seem to just pop up every year.
Wow well presented mark
Thanks Dr. Felton!

Tragic, awful, dreadful. So many criminals got away and still do.
But they will pay in eternity unless they have confessed before the Lord before their death. There is forgiveness until the very end! 🙏❣️🇺🇸
Happily aided by the Catholic Church and Red Cross et al. Also the US government used them to help build rockets and missiles. The good old “land of the free”. Such bullshit.
Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, Arthur Harris...

Your use of the phrase “A Willing Executioner” didn’t go unnoticed. (Goldhagen 1996)
I also absolutely love your phrase “unreconstructed Nazi.” The writing here is terrific.
Demanding the extradition of Thatcher over the _General Belgrano_ is very cheeky. While the British made it clear they would sink ships entering the exclusion zone, that doesn’t rule out engaging legitimate military targets anywhere else, and the Belgrano was absolutely a legitimate target.
True. It may have been elderly, but it was rugged, carried SAMs, and a salvo from its main guns could send any British ship to the bottom.
When there is a state of war, the enemy is fair game, in international waters. What happened in WW2?
@@michaelcudby787 war was not declared, so no.
@@el_Contra. Putin hasn’t declared war on Ukraine either. What’s your point? Would you claim Ukraine wasn’t entitled to sink the Moskva?
@@morstyrannis1951 why are you telling me this? I am not the one that brought the "state of war" issue into the conversation.
Totally agree with you.
Exactly correct, not marks finest hour dragging this up here .
Exquisitely detailed.
Priebke in the 1973 movie "Massacre in Rome" with Richard Burton.

Where are these classified files you allege have never been declassified? What proof do you have of their existence?
I've read about this massacre, but no information was given about why it occurred. Thank you for providing the foundational information. I wonder if the Partisans could have used the explosives more effectively by disrupting transportation and communications infrastructure. Would such a diversion have muted the maniacal retribution by the SS and SD?
I don't think victim-blaming is any-more helpful in understanding crimes of the past than it is in understanding crimes of the present.
The US Army unofficial policy was to terminate any captured SS prisoner because of their heinous massacres of innocent people.
Andyour point is?

We, as professionals, said it was just too bad that we lost the Belgrano"
So for Carlos Menem to liken Thatcher to Priebke is ill informed, asinine and offensive; in keeping with much about Menem and many Argentinian leaders.
I recall a joke at the time -
"Who won the Falklands War? Argentina, because they got a change of government and we didn't."
The real winners, of course, were the Falkland Islanders.
