His point about the Palestinians not being allowed back after the fighting ceased is the absolute key. It does not matter why civilians flee a war zone, it's ethnic cleansing when you don't let them back based on ethnicity.

@@hitreset0291 It looks like you're looking for simplistic binaries to judge people and regimes by. This is more complex than you can imagine. Pappe, Benny Morris and other historians have spent their entire lives studying this. Yet they and many others have different views and interpretations of the history. And you think you can sum it up in a couple of sentences. Israel is obviously not an apartheid regime. Citizens of all races and religions have equal rights in law. You can argue that they don't have equality in reality. But you can't deny that in law they do. There are Arab lawyers, doctors, teachers, politicians, soldiers, who live and work alongside Jews. They all have one equal vote. It's just lazy to call it apartheid. The US support for Israel dates back to the cold war when the Soviet Union supported the Arab nations in the Middle East. It's not hard if you are interested in history to consider that either of those superpowers could have supported the other 'team'. Israel was very left wing until the 1970s and the Arabs were very conservative. Perhaps it reduces to simple opportunism on either side. Although nothing is simple in this history. As for the US supporting the Ukraine and therefore ought to support the Palestinians: I don't understand your point here. Would you like to explain it further or do you prefer to continue with lazy, simplistic binaries?
An amazing history of how a historically persecuted Jewish minority can in turn persecute another people, turning a Palestinian majority into a minority. This is the tragedy of history, vicious cycle of injustices just piling up!

The Jaffa Riots of 1921 a series of violent riots in Mandatory Palestine on May 1-7, 1921, which began as a confrontation between two Jewish groups but developed into an attack by Arabs on Jews. Dozens of British, Arab, and Jewish witnesses all reported that Arab men bearing clubs, knives, swords, and some pistols broke into Jewish buildings and murdered their inhabitants, while women followed to loot. They attacked Jewish pedestrians and destroyed Jewish homes and stores. They beat and killed Jews in their homes, including children, and in some cases split open the victims' skulls. This is not an isolated incident. Murderous mobs went on rampages all over Palestine in the 20's-40's. No wonder Jews don't want Muslims living among them.
First of all it was a war and both sides had losses. The same wikipedia page you checked also mentions that there was 47 Jews deaths and 48 Arabs deaths. Arabs had no problem with native Jews (only 5% of the whole population). They lived side by side as neighbours for centuries in total peace. It was only when the Zionist project of taking the land and establishing a state started to surface, and external Jews started immigrating from Europe and America and Russia, along with Belfour declaration that promised the land to the Jews, only then the Arabs started to defend themselves from the people that came with the intent to steal the land. Which happened. They stole the land, they expelled people from their homes, they are still making massacres to this moment.@@mattg3789

I'm from Australia and the only country that I know of that settlers worked with the native population is New Zealand, the Treaty of Waitangi. This is reflected in their national anthem one of the most beautiful in the world containing both Maori and English words.
😂😂 The Maori tribes were headhunters and originally traded heads with British expeditions. Later they fought wars This same story happened all over the world. I've no idea why you would think NZ is unique in this. African slavers worked with Europeans. North American Indian tribes allied with the Spanish, French, American settlers, and Mexicans against rival tribes. Amero-Indian tribes allied with the Spanish against the Aztecs... Etc.
I have no doubt there was tension. British missionaries saw what was happening in Australia and petitioned King William to protect the Maories; King William agreed, James Busby worked the Maori to protect the them by drafting the treaty of nationhood. This was a case where a settler had enough humanity to help the indigenous population and ultimate made NZ what it is today. This interview is a valuable contribution to public understanding. For once we have an interlocutor who is conversant with the subject and able to ask illuminating questions. And in Ilan Pappe we have probably the foremost historian on the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. In the latter regard, I found the final three minutes especially noteworthy: he mentions how Israel sees the native Palestinians as immigrants and markets its expertise in repressing similarly constituted minorities in other countries. Israel plays an important role in training the internal security forces of many states, from impoverished countries to the very wealthiest and most powerful. Increasingly, the Israeli model is seen as the best, most professional option in designing strategies of mass repression in the name of democracy.

@@jtjwhite in the late 1940s, Israel has had a well trained, organized and armed military. The only Arab army that came close at the time was Jordan and Israel made a deal with them to share territory with them after Palestinians had been expelled, thus taking them out of that equation. Over 700,000 Palestinians were forcibly removed or terrorized out of their urban neighborhoods and villages. For 75 years, the territory left to Palestinians has shrunk and they've had to cope with an oppressive Israeli occupation. That breeds resentment, anger and violence. Have Israelis died over the past 75 years? Sadly, they have, despite their superior military strength and resources. Far more Palestinians have died and will continue to do do unless Israeli and international policies change.

The population exchange in some parts of the Subcontinent is also absurd. The provinces and some of the princely states should be compared on a paradigm with European states and ethnic groups. Imagine sending German Catholics to Spain, and sending French Protestants to Scotland, or sending Greeks to live in Ukraine.
I read a Spanish historian's work which was highly critical of Francisco Franco's regime (the historian survived the Spanish Civil War but became disillusioned with Franco at some point) and the professor wrote that Franco had tried enticing German Catholics still alive after WW2 to emigrate to Spain instead of going to the Americas. He also told the same thing to Mussolini's former allies and loyalists. I forget the historian's name, I'm pretty sure he isn't alive anymore, but that's my two cents.
This is fascinating. For the purposes of documentation for future study, does Professor Pappe or other scholars give the names and locations of towns and villages where Jewish settlers expelled or otherwise removed native Palestinians ? It is essential to have the names and locations. Thank you. R

Good question -- to be clear, i intentionally (and openly) played Devil's advocate during my interview with Pappe, as i find that generally creates the most robust and insightful material. So, i wouldn't say i was entirely unconvinced by Pappe's characterization of the conflict to begin with. Ultimately, using 'ethnic cleansing' as a term to describe some portion of the events of 1948 is a narrative and political choice, and a reasonable argument can be made for it (on both 'sides'). Where he and i perhaps do differ is on his certainty of choice of framing, and his single-minded political commitment to an arguably quite radical left-wing approach to 'resolving' the conflict. Painting 'Zionism' writ-large as an inherently 'criminal' movement leaves little nuance for understanding the diversity of actors and views at play, in both the Israeli and Arab/Palestinian camps, both past and present. It denies an entire people a sense of legitimacy to their safety concerns, and thus strikes me as something of a non-starter for fostering understanding and reconciliation between the parties. The same holds true, in my opinion, for how the framing of the ongoing war has been playing out in various corners of the public sphere.
To put this in its historical context: the allied powers had just geenlighted the expulsion of 12 million ethnic Germans and numerous other minorities (Poles, Ukranians, etc) after ww2. It was an accepted tool of geopolitics in those days. This constant question of the interviewer if what Ilan was saying was documented is bizarre. Ilan is one of the biggest and most respected historian and it's his job to investigate the truth and re establish facts and actions that happened, he isn't a fiction writer who has being inspired by a true event. He talks with a historian.
In 1948 450,000 Jews who had lived for centuries under Muslim 'rule' in Tehran, Baghdad, Damascus, Cairo and Yemen had their synagogues bombed by Mossad - as a Jewish friend of mine - a Hero of the Israeli Airforce who left in 1953 because he understood Israel was more Apartheid than his native South Africa - because the Ashkenazis needed someone to clean their toilets - re Ilan's point that when they came to Israel, they were treated as second class Jews.
A Jewish friend of mine traveled to Israel to work there in the late 1960’s. She was treated so badly by Israeli’s. She said it was as if they wanted to spit on her. Free labor and money - her words.
damn.... i had used ilans example of the iraqi synagogue being bombed by mossad to scare jews into going to israel, but i was unsure of the evidence available. this is horrendous. truly disturbing if true.
His point about the Palestinians not being allowed back after the fighting ceased is the absolute key. It does not matter why civilians flee a war zone, it's ethnic cleansing when you don't let them back based on ethnicity.
In the midst of all out war and intention to annihilate the jews I don't see how the Arabs expelled from Israel or the Jews forced to leave Egypt would've been allowed back

Brilliant, eloquent and shows so much empathy to the Palestinians! Thank you Pr Ilan Pappé to have helped me understand the Palestinian history.
My friend is Palestinian, his wife's father is still living in Palestine and keeps the keys of his family's home in Haifa, the home that was stolen years ago by the incoming Jews, dreaming that he would go back one day.
I was very moved when I knew this.
The keys & their land title are the 2 things that all the Palestinians kept (at least those who had time to grab them) before they were forced to flee.
I've a friend whose family fled Jaffa believing they'd be back within a month. They lost both their house and their family business.

It’s really beautiful to find resources that let me know that what I think is not monstrously wrong. Dr Pappe doesn’t express so much his opinions as the perennial human knowledge which cannot be opposed by mere rhetoric.
So glad I found Illan Pappé and watched this video. I just bought his book

A real discussion by a real Jew. Awesome interview.
Grazie Ila Pappé per la sua testimonianza chiara e pulita.Lei é una ricchezza storica! Tanto rispetto per la sua grande onestà!
This is fascinating. For the purposes of documentation for future study, does Professor Pappe or other scholars give the names and locations of towns and villages where Jewish settlers expelled or otherwise removed native Palestinians ? It is essential to have the names and locations. Thank you. R
No need to have names and locations. Don’t you know by now that this never happened? It is not possible that Israelis expelled Arabs. It is only possible that Arabs expelled Israelis. It is only possible that Arabs expelled Israelis. It is only possible that Arabs expelled Israelis. Please repeat this 40 more times and do not ask impertinent questions.
@@richardpaczynski5486 The expulsions, the cruel means of expulsion (e.g. the massacre at Deir Yasin) and destruction of hundreds of villages are well documented. There are maps, also a documentary made by two South Africans, Mark Kaplan and Heidi Grunebaum (Regrettably, I don't recall the name of the film). The forests on which Israel prides itself grew on bloodstained ground. An Internet search will yield much, alternately the books by authors like Ilan Pappe, Avi Shlaim, Norman Finkelstein, inter alia. There was also a programme run by the University of the Negev to document Bedouin settlements before these could be eradicated.

My facetious comment from earlier in this thread was uncalled for. Please accept my apology.
I responded at greater length, but it looks like the editor nix’d them.
Cutting to the chase, despite the crimes of the past and man’s inhumanity to man throughout the levant, those who care need to ask whether or not Israel is a force for good in today’s world. Based on evidence and personal belief, I say Yes, resoundingly so.
Would strongly recommend What Justice Demands by Elan Journo. It is fair-handed and inspiring. This is a must read for those who care about the Middle East and the role of the United States in its future.

It’s the story all Palestinians have heard from their parents and grandparents. It is so so sad, the impact is a long term impact for those who were kicked out and a daily disaster for those still in. Take the ones who were forced out, there is a common thread which is that all Palestinians are scattered and have no one country that they can equally call home. Parents can be in Jordan, grandkid can be in Canada, uncle can be in Germany, brother can be in the US, sister can be in Lebanon. It is so sad, each of our families lived apart and when retirement comes - almost no one is with their family. This Zionism has slipped the livelihood of the Palestinians generation after generation, and for those that managed to stay, you can all see today how they are existing - cannot even say living.. Thank you to Mr. Ilan Pappe for documenting history correctly as witnessed by those who lived it and not by the Zionist historians with all their false books. Thank you for the interviewer and the team as well. God Bless.
Ilan Pappe is one of the most intelligent, insightful and courageous persons who walks the earth . This interviewer seems to want to hear himself talk more than listen to what Pappe has to say .

It looks like this interview took place in a hospital room. I hope Ilan Pappe is doing ok. Another person you might want to interview if he is willing, is Thomas Suarez, the author of the well-documented State of Terror: How Terrorism Created Modern Israel, which can be considered a companion book to Pappe's The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine.

Moving in to other peoples houses and changing locks is a more vivid picture of the injustice done to Palestinians than destroying their villages, which might be seen as a just an inevitable result of war. I’m very curious if the interviewer now is more convinced of Pape’s analysis in light of the current conflict.
Framing, narrative, political choice, You are SO full of sh t

To put this in its historical context: the allied powers had just geenlighted the expulsion of 12 million ethnic Germans and numerous other minorities (Poles, Ukranians, etc) after ww2. It was an accepted tool of geopolitics in those days. It was not regarded as a crime in those days, but was referred to as population exchange or transfer, or as a necessary expulsion in order to avoid future internicine strife. The term "ethnic cleansing" was not coined until decades later
