- Why Is A Raven Like A Writing Desk?
The infamous riddle from the Mad Hatter's tea party scene in Disney's animation classic - Alice in Wonderland (1951).
The author of... Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was Lewis Carroll.
For more info on this novel see... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice's_... - Фільми й анімація
“Let’s change the subject.” *bashes his friend’s head in*
This movie is perfect
The King of the Penguins Yep.
I don't even wanna know where the Hare was keeping that mallet.
The King of the Penguins I don’t know, it’s not really my cup of tea😜
U
"Why is a Raven like a writing desk?"
They both have *cause/caws* for thought!
The moment they started to mess up with the rabbit's clock, I love it.
Thank goodness somebody finally decided to break the thing...lol
Im 40 and i quote so many lines from this scene
Anywhere is within walking distance... if you have the time
Alice:"Why is a raven like a writing desk?"
Mad Hatter:"Why is a WHAT?!"
March Hare:"Careful, She's stark rrraven MAD!"
+Levi Fout ANSWER " BE-CAWS THEY BOTH HAVE CA-WS FOR THOUGHTS" LOLOLOL solved JAN 20 2016
what kind of cat can grin?? the kind of cat who shows paws to paws a smile.....lololol
'Stark raving mad', sry, buggin' me.
HAHA
Stark... Not start.
"Ah.. but that's the point! If you don't think you shouldn't talk"
Even though he's crazy, he actually does have a good point.
Even someone who's stark raving mad like the march hare is capable of making sense from time to time
"I mean my C-A-T."
*"TeEeEaAaA?!"*
“Just a half a cup if you don’t mind!” I love that visual gag 😂
Why is a raven like a writing desk?
I don't know!
It's got me raving MAD!
It’s funny how Alice gets mad for the good reasons she’s cute when she has a bad temper. ☺️💛
A Raven is like a Writing Desk because there are BILLS on both of them!
0:49 how I try to get out of a social situation
When Lewis Carroll wrote this riddle, he never intended for it to have an answer. After all, it's Wonderland, it's meant to be nonsense. But so many people asked him what the answer is that he came up with one: Edgar Allen Poe wrote on both
I used to think it had something to do with pens. Especially in "Alice's time" (in the "real" world obv.s..) quills with feathers were probably still common.

love that Ed Wynn. I always do his impression. "sugar? two spoons!"
The randomness makes it awsome
Funny thing is she wanted to avoid march hare but she ended up meeting both the March hare and the mad hatter
*This movie made absolutely no sense*
I love it
"Ah but that's the point! If you don't think you shouldn't talk!"
This sums up all this generation needs to hear.
Advice you should take...
"- And now my dear, as you were saying...
- Oh yes, I was sitting on the river bank with.. _with, you know who.._
- I DO!?
- I mean my 'C. A. T.'
- *TEAAAAAAA?"*
I bet Alice and Authur Dent would get along since they just want a cup of tea. Along with the crazy things that go on their lives.
I love how the White Rabbit just shows up out of nowhere. 😅😅
2:47 **zooms dramatically in on the march hare, the mad hatter, Alice, the white rabbit, the sleeping doormouse, a couple of horrified animated teapots, and a completely still background image of a chair**
These three minutes are just too perfect, Lolz~
Because you approach neither without cause (caws)
Oh God I forgot the scene where they screw around with the watch. That poor Rabbit 😭
This is what its like to have kids
Musical score by Oliver Wallace and Paul Smith.
....what the crap is mustard doing on a tea party table in the first place?
that's pretty mad, if'n you ask me.
"Ah, but that's the point: If you don't think, you shouldn't talk!" lmao That's my favorite line! 🤣
I agree with how it sounds like rabbit said "snow". It's actually slow since that's what he thought with what is wrong with his watch.
I inquire as to in which way or ways the animal scientifically identified as Corvus Corax, more colloquially known as a raven, is similar to a constructed assemblage of wood which by definition is used for scribes to inscribe verbiage on thin sheets of the pulp of wood or other fibrous substances such as hemp?
Oh my stars!
They both come from trees
Why is a raven like a writing desk? Because that which is never backwards is always forwards, and a raven is nevar backwards, and a writing desk is always for words.
Even though there is no answer this explanation is the best I've heard!
DiG Baireád
Thank you! But don't believe the experts when they tell you there is no answer. I believe 100% that there is, and you should watch my riddle answer video if you'd like to know more.
I like your answer the most
Whoa, that’s heavy
makes sense
They both come from trees
Why is a raven like a writing desk?
A) They are both useless without a feather.
B) Because Poe wrote on both of them.
C) Neither is made of cheese.
They both produce notes, although they are always flat
They both have the letter r
Fun Fact: The 'Moon' is made of cheese
I want whatever's in the tea
Cam Cam I heard it was an allegory of Opium or something like that
DrCerebro something dude..... Something
Daniel Gertler Thank you for that info :) I really mean it
+Cam Cam Sugar. Obscene amounts of sugar.
+Cam Cam crack
"Sugar?"
"Sugar! Two spoons! Ye-"
*Hands two spoons*
"Two spoons. Thankyouyes..."
*Crams into watch*
The mad hatter is howtobasic

OMG
I’m dying 😂
Two days slow that's what it is" 😂 im dying
I love how the actor changes his voice abruptly in a so matter of fact.
Alice: "Why is a raven like a writing desk?"
Mad Hatter: "I beg your pardon?"
Alice: "Why is a raven like a writing desk?"
Mad Hatter: "Why is a WHAT?" Lol.😂

Is it normal to feel bad and amused at the same time when they're "fixing" the pocket watch? It's amusing because these people are absolutely insane, but you feel bad for the poor rabbit, I mean, he's already late enough as it is and now his watch got ruined.
at least they didnt use mustard
Because Edgar Allen Poe wrote on both
nice
Nope ~ Lewis Carroll answered his own riddle, and that is not the answer, though it's fitting.
"Lewis Carroll himself wrote the answer, after being badgered by people
nonstop since the book's original publication. He said that, in the
original book, there was no answer. To end the pain of ceaseless
inquisitive fan letters, though, he went ahead and thought up an
adequate response that he put in preface to later editions. Carroll's
answer to why a raven is like a writing desk? 'Because it can produce a
few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is never put with the wrong
end in front!' " ~io9.gizmodo.com/5872014/the-answer-to-the-most-famous-unanswerable-fantasy-riddle
Mike Fortier No no, both produce notes, though both quite flat.
Inky quills. Both have inky quills.
Just half a cup, if you don't mind...

+Crimson Slayer BECA-AWS THEY BOTH CAN HAVE CA-AWS FOR THOUGHTS...
Why wasn't THIS in the remake? This is GOLDEN!
Ikrani Careful! She's stark raven mad!
What? The riddle "Why is a raven like a writing desk?"? That was in Tim Burton's version!
The Joker
No, I mean the mad watch.
+Ikrani Oh.
Ikrani because it a "Tim Burton" remake
those are awful
I think this planted the seed for my weird sense of humor when I saw it as a kid. I love the fact that these characters are batshit insane and when Alice tries her best to keep up with them they just treat her like *she's* the one who's insane.
Also when he crams random food into the watch but all of a sudden mustard of all things, is too silly. He's so uptight and self-righteous about his arbitrary bullshit logic even though there's zero rhyme or reason behind it.
Two days slow, that's what it is.
Alice's innocence makes her adorable in a dorky way. Also, I bust out laughing when the White Rabbit says, "WAIT, BE CAREFUL!" XD
Mustard?! Don't let's be silly... Lemon that's differentest.
Непобедимые и легендарные
Ones a rest for pens and the other is a pest for wrens
nice
+Tom Baggott That is rather brilliant, and something I'm sure Lewis Carroll would've approved of - maybe he had a similar answer lurking in the back of his mind when he wrote it in 1865.
+Zach Brookes ANSWER " BE-CAWS THEY BOTH HAVE CA-WS FOR THOUGHTS" LOLOLOL solved JAN 20 2016
I believe the answer is actually Edgar Allan Poe. He was a famous writer, so he obviously had a writing desk. And furthermore his favorite animal was the Raven. Thus the two are tied to together in that particular way, but then again I find your conclusion of the riddle quite cunning. I would have never been able to think of something of that magnitude even with my previous knowledge, and I find it very interesting that your answer rhymes and uses background information about ravens. You would have made an exceptional Alice. 😉

They both have cause/caws for thoughts.
because you wouldn't want either to land on you
BECAWS THEY BOTH CAN HAVE CAWS FOR THOUGHTS....
The way the March Hare at around 1:10 says "Careful, she's start RRRAVEN mad."
I don't know why but I laugh so much.
+Amberoo B THANK YOU , I NEEDED THAT, HERE. ANSWER " BE-CAWS THEY BOTH HAVE CA-WS FOR THOUGHTS"
I still laugh at that to this day, and I’m in my 30’s.
Stark.... Not start.
He says starck , not start
Alice's voice is so pleasant to listen to.
"MAD WATCH MAD WATCH MAD WATCH"
THERES ONLY ONE WAY TO STOP A MAD WATCH!!!!!
*smash*
Why is a raven like a writing desk?
Because's there a "B" in both, and an "N" in neither!
(Remember who's telling the riddle, and this answer makes perfect sense. :P)
OOOOOOOOHHH
Alex Kirk
Aldous Huxley is calling, he wants his work of live back
Nope, still don't get it. I've reread it like ten times and I still don't get it! Could you please explain it to me?
Gryffyn Addams the letter B is in the word "both", right? And the letter N in "neither"?
"Raven" and "writing desk" have both an N, and neiter has a B. Unlike the actual words, which do.
Iolla Rauschenbach Omg
The irony of the riddle is that there is no answer, but people will still try to make sense of the senseless which is silly because any answer is the wrong answer yet they will insist it is the right answer, even though there is no answer.
Bran Phillips ...What?
but there is an answer, it was answered by Lewis Carroll 15 years before the movie, to calm the fans' curiosity
a raven is like a writing desk because -they both have notes, raven's are flat, and of course the notes on the desk are flat too because the desk is, the second reason he gave us is that -a writing desk is never backwards, a "raven" is "nevar" but backwards.
The most hilarious scene is there! 0:51 "PFFOOOM !!! wawawawawawawa POP !" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 LMFAO those who chose these cartoon sound effects are geniuses 😂😂 I just love the first one lol RIDICULOUS & FUNNY !^^
All randomly hit him xd
There's only one way to stop a mad watch!
I laughed so hard at that
Sitting on the river bank with You-Know-Who is dangerous!
Let this lesson be learned children NEVER give the Mad Hatter your possessions. Unless you want them to be destroyed of course.
My favourite scene in the entire movie
God help anyone who tries to comprehend the mindsets of these two...
talk about an army of Shrinks
0:46-0:53 If I could do that every time I wanted to move a subject forward. :D
The mad hatter reminds me of king candy
Yeah :P
Pebulae I know, right?
They did that intentionally =)
The white rabbit sounds like Smee from Peter Pan and Alice sounds like Wendy x
*****
thank you for telling me! :-D
+Kaia Lonergan WHITE RABBIT TO ME, IS MORE LIKE LEE HARVY OSWALD. 1927 OSWALD RABBIT....1950 HARVEY RABBIT....LEE A FIELD...FIELD OF RABBITS....ALICE WAS MARINA AND JFK WAS KING OF HEARTS...
+Kaia Lonergan ANSWER " BE-CAWS THEY BOTH HAVE CA-WS FOR THOUGHTS"
Sergio Meza Kathryn Beaumont is still alive and well, just looked her up. She also did the voices for Wendy and Alice in Kingdom Hearts as well.
Kaia Lonergan Bill Thompson also did the voice for Droopy as well.
This movie is way better than I remember.
i love how crazy everybody is! XD
We aren't crazy. We're mad. There's a difference, you know.
idk, maybe because they both come with inky quills,
because Poe wrote on both,
because there is a B in both and an N in neither,
because it slopes with a flap,
because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is never put with the wrong end in front?
though honestly i have no idea myself :p
I thought King Candy sounded overly familiar. *Now* I remember.....
Anyone else think the March Hare is the best character in the story? I'm hoping to play him on stage in my uni's drama group.
I prefer the door mouse but he's better than mad hatter
"CAREFUL! SHE'S STARK RAVING MAD!"
Said the hare who's as mad as the mad hatter is
The meaning of life in a nutshell
Somehow I've always loved how Alice slams the table and says, "Have a cup of tea, indeed!" :-P
She's stark, rrrravin' mad.
Turbo from Wreck it Ralph has always reminded me of the Mad Hatter
Watch-my-magic oh. my. god. you're not wrong.
"There's only one way to stop a mad watch!" *SMASH!*
"Two days slow, that's what it is." XD
Watching the beginning of this video, I once again had that feeling of sadness well up within me. Alice never got one sip of that DAMN TEA!
Just half a cup if you don't mind- my favorite part😂
I think the crumbs in the butter should be the least of his worries.
The answer is “they both stand on sticks” and “they both come with inky quills.”

What I did to that rabbit's watch was a pure work of art. That man is just insane.
Butter can not only be a coffee booster, but can fix watches along with other breakfast food! *Slam bacon on itttt!*
I don't think so, too few eggs
I remember watching this as a kid and not thinking too much of the weird things they were doing, but rewatching it as an adult I find it so hilarious

+ALEISTER CROWLEY what?...
Why is a raven like a writing desk?
Because the two are nothing alike.
They are both useless without a feather
Two days slow. That's what it is
***** OH MY GOD! WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT!?
george baum actually it specifies the desk, as in not for writing but for standing. Maybe both are naked without a feather (the ability to write or fly).
george baum hahaha I just commented that and now every body started to solve it.
man oh man i love the mad hatter
BE- CAWS ,THEY BOTH CAN HAVE CAWS FOR THOUGHTS.....CAWS AND CAUSE MIRROR...
Is Alice a Death Eater? To be sitting with You-Know-Who...now that's no good
*****
Alice didn't want to scare the Dormouse by saying the word "Cat."
I dunno, maybe she IS, and this is all a silly curse dream.
Because writing desk are always right side, and "nevar" backwards
You mean to say a writing desk is for words?
A writing desk is a rest for pens and a raven is a pest for wrens.
The sad part is Alice is never'd even got a chance to have tea yet due to Mad Hatter & March Hare's ridiculous mischievous!
I think i was 9 or 10 when i saw this on the disney channel with my brother... We were flipping the channels and then we got into these scenes with the mad hatter... I remember laughing so much that i had tears all over my face
Since then no other interpretation of Alice in Wonderland has gotten my attention quite like this one. Lol choosing lemon vs jam. Ridiculous
+AceTheFace954 Wasn't it mustard vs lemon?
+DrCerebro ANSWER " BE-CAWS THEY BOTH HAVE CA-WS FOR THOUGHTS"
MUSTARD?! And he grabs a lemon instead because mustard would be "silly" and the lemon is "different"...that's fuckin' hysterical. The things people come up with on acid trips, I tell ya..
What's with the "Clean cup, clean cup! Move down, move down!" xD
But i haven't used my cup!
March Hare:Mad Watch Mad Watch Mad Watch
“MUSTARD?! Now don’t be silly. Now lemon, that’s different.”
I loved this movie. it was so witty and the sarcasm was of the wall...lol
"It's gone mad...
