Gosh how much talent has God put into this man?
As much as he could hold, plus a little more.
Top 100 greatest songwriters of all time.
#55 to be exact. And still it's criminally low
The Muse merely descended onto him more heavily than most of us.
@@XenoGuru anybody who puts him out of the top 10 is just flat incorrect… outside of top 5 requires explanation
all of it
Probably the only song I'd dance to.
“I’m full of bourbon, I can’t stand up” captures the spirit of this song pretty well, I think.
I had to take a break from waits for 20years.
It’s now back with a vengeance
This song is king
had to wait
I see what you did there.
Tom waits is a mind parasite. You think you're rid of him but he comes back harder than ever
i'm obsessed with this song and the vibe it gives. i think i should watch down by law.
Watch it. Down by law is like this song in movie form. Not in lyrics necessarily but in style and vibe.
Never gets old, love the 20 second guitar solo.
Greatest 20 second solo of all time.
Really any longer than that and they’re taking the piss
@@dylanfenster6785 Marc Ribot!
Understamated, in my opinion, this is a great guitar and instrumental work crowned by that unpaired voice. A masterpiece all-arround
the rhythm of the words "dutch pink on a downtown train" is one of my favourite ever lines
"well he knew that he'd be ready with a stainless steel machete" is mine 😊
It’s a sad and beautiful world!
Not enough room to swing a cat
It was very cunning rabbit. Da !
You guys just made me smile.
I scream ! You scream ! We all scream for ice cream! 🇮🇹
Sparklehorse ❤
One of the best guitar solos I’ve ever heard.
I love him in "Cold Water", too. It was so ALMOST sloppy, but perfect.
The one and only Marc Ribot!
This one is great but the one in the hoist that rag is better imo
Swordfish trombone was my first Tom Waits. Been listening ever since. Tom Waits will always have a piece of heart.
Franks wild years as a 15 year old here. It was an odd album the first time i listened, so i listened again, and again.
Ill turn 37 in a month, and Tom Waits has helped me through the darkest periods of my life.
Listen to all the albums before as well, they’re all brilliant xxx
Tom is a great treasure.
I always want that baritone sax/guitar outro to last for three hours.
Tom Waits, the king of kings.
Love me some Tom Waits, Small Change and the Piano has been Drinkin got me hooked in 1976
Down By Law!
Yes!
Drunk on wine @,2 0clock in morning. Greatest time to listen to. Tom blues.😅
In the top 3 of my favs on this brilliant album. In fact, I'd say this is within Tom's top 3-4 records that he ever did!
What's You're 1st and second?
I'd never heard of Tom Waits until the night in the mid 70s I was in bed in Little Torch Key watching Martin Mull's America 2-night. Tom started playing "The Piano Has Been Drinking", I bolted upright, swung my feet to the floor and yelled "Who the hell is that?" "Who IS that?" It's been an obsession ever since. Jim Varney was on the show as well
That's incredible. I've been listening to him since I heard "Swordfishtrombones" when I was 16. Every era, the man is fucking incredible.
Doesn't get better than this!
Because it is absolute music
@@dzombi80 whoever didn't like ahmet's comment.... Someday you will understand that good music sometimes is more than something to drunkenly nail your crush by.

Halt and Catch Fire. That show was full of great music. This is absolutely lovely. 👍❤️
Beautiful song!!!
I was 10 yrs old when i heard this, watching a film i wasnt allowed to watch*(*ssh) & this was the gift of true beauty...took me a while to track it down on vinyl(8 yrs later)
Still wowed by this today💖

J'ai découvert Tom Waits grâce à cette chanson dans le film "Down by law" (sous le coup de la Loi) Elle reste parmi mes préférées 37 ans après!

...vraiment incroyable!
Pareil.
Criminal that this doesn't have more views
The best things should stay that way
I'm sure Tom Waits appreciates you keeping his work a best kept secret.
...wait...
...no, he does, in fact, need money to live! Musicians are very needy, what with demanding ready access to food, water, and shelter
@@AnnDVine no but k
@@AnnDVine It's a shame Tom isn't a talented songwriter who also totally controls the rights to his music. Then whenever he needs money he could have his songs covered by artists like The Eagles, Rod Stewart, and Bruce Springsteen and then just collect the royalties. Oh wait...
Shuuuuush, don’t tell anybody, this stuff picks you.???
Music ou cinéma tom waits est talentueux rien est à jeter.
Happy Birthday Mr. Tom!
GENIUS!!! GENIUS!!!!!! GENIUS!!!
Love the whipcrack
Down by law❤❤❤, and an Amazing introlove this
Edna Milton in a drop-dead suit
Dutch Pink on a downtown train
Two-dollar pistol but the gun won't shoot
I'm in the corner on the pouring rain
Sixteen men on a dead man's chest
And I've been drinking from a broken cup
Two pairs of pants and a mohair vest
I'm full of bourbon, I can't stand up
Hey, little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone
Hey, little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone
Schiffer broke a bottle on Morgan's head
And I've been stepping on the Devil's tail
Across the stripes of a full moon's head
Through the bars of a Cuban jail
Bloody fingers on a purple knife
A flamingo drinking from a cocktail glass
I'm on the lawn with someone else's wife
Admire the view from up on top of the mast
Hey, little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone
Hey, little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone
[Guitar solo]
Hey, little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone
Hey, little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone
Yellow sheets on a Hong Kong bed
Stazybo horn and a Slingerland ride
"To the carnival," is what she said
A hundred dollars makes it dark inside
Edna Milton in a drop-dead suit
Dutch Pink on a downtown train
Two-dollar pistol but the gun won't shoot
I'm in the corner on the pouring rain
Hey, little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone
Hey, little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone
That's it I'm listening to the whole album
I really wish we got to hear more of that last section, it's a shame it cuts off
He does that all the time. I guess he just wants it to end on a high note.
It has such an atmosphere to it. Makes me feel like an alcoholic
Guitar player is killing
Marc Ribot!
He has a lot of other projects too. Well worth a listen.
My favorite
Rain dogs is one of Tom's greatest records. With a littel help from his friend Keith.
Yeah, the trilogy about Frank and Blue Valentine is everything IMO
And help from an even better guitar player, Marc!
@@seanmartin8007 If that is the name of Tom's "usual" guitar player, I agree 100%.
perfectly! !!!!!!
he's super specific about his guitar players.
Томми Зажигает!!!
Gold
The clave break + Marc Ribot's sleazy tango line. The only thing that tops it is Marc Ribot's solo in Cold Water.
Tom Waits and Jim Jarmusch were born to work together.
This is the first song you must play when introducing someone to Tom Waits.
Love! ❤

(Jockey Full of Bourbon Lyrics Übersetzung

Things to do in Denver when you're dead
Give it a name
A girl walked back to her table from the jukebox. I never talk to strangers in bars, but I said, "hey, did you play 'Jockey Full of Bourbon'?" And she had. We've been married seventeen years.

I’m utterly ashamed about never having written a comment about this song
You've broken the pattern! Rejoice!
It left you speechless !!!

I am a raindog, too.
Bernard Black definitely had this album going regularly...
...i want to be a tom waits song
Things to do in Denver when you're dead brought me here
I'm so sure this was the inspiration for the Black Books theme , Look it up ;)
I completely agree with you!

What kind of style it is?
One of dogs was named Waits
Is it Marc Ribot on guitar ?
Yes
found this because of that one multiple month old cover will wood did of this song
I thought I'd be the only one
Just came for the same reason
If there’s anyone or anything else that can compare, please point the way.
'independent as a hog on ice...'
I doubt think I'll ever really get Tom Waits. The songwriting is clearly great, but the drunk old hobo covered in soot and barnacles schtick really grates on me
Are there any albums where the vocals, instrumentation, arrangements are more I don't know... pleasant sounding?
I like the track 'Hold On' from Mule Variations
