I am an Albanian born in Germany and grew up in the neighboring town of Eppelheim, 2 km away from PHV. Heidelberg used to have such a nice American flair, the area around Mandy's Restaurant will always remain unforgettable. But my best time was when once a year PHV opened the gates for non-Americans and the German-American folk festival took place. In Germany, we kids were always influenced by American movies and music, so we were always big USA fans, so PHV was always very exciting for me and we felt like we were in USA for a short time. Unfortunately, that's all over now, Heidelberg has changed a lot since then. The city is not as open as it was back then and has become a bit more boring and depressing. Many American buildings have been torn down, and a whole new district called Bahnstadt has sprung up where they once stood.
I lived on Patrick Hendry village on a street named "Bull Run Court" from 1997 to 2005 . I have wonderful memories of living in Germany 🇩🇪 I wonder if the Germans miss the American people, we sure miss them.
I lived there from 1968-71. I'll never forget my father who was Master Sergeant on base there. The matinee movies. I remember watching Butch, Cassidy and the Sundance kid there as well as Patton. I tried to talk during the movie and my dad told me shut up! My dad idolized him. That is George Patton. I can never forget those three story apartments coming from California that was used to sunshine all year but not here. When winter fell it was transformed from a lush green woods to beautiful white wooded forest with a blanket of snow. Just beautiful. Mrs. Ungenhier, my second grade teacher was this beautiful German woman. I will always recall her as my first crush. I remember the local people coming on base to sell us brochen and the most delicious bratwurst and schnitzel. It's also where I discovered gummy bears! I love Germany
I was with the Veterinary core and we had a office in the same building as the MP's . We also were food and sanitation inspectors. I was there 1962-1964
Lived there 70-76. 12 E Bull Run Court! All 6 of us Johnson brothers raising hell!! 😝😝Football, basketball, baseball were all through the AYA and was the shiii!! Giants and Cowboys were the traveling teams whooping ass all over Germany! Heidelberg High Lions 🦁! Annual carnivals and hanging out at the bumper cars all day!! Cant forget the beer garden/tent that some of us snuck into. Hated to leave. Best years of my life growing up!
I lived on PHV when I was a teenager, from 1990-93. I lived on Brandywine street, which was in the area at the start of this video. The gate ( 0:07 - 0:12 ) at the beginning of the video was not far behind my house. When I lived there, it was always left open, except during the first gulf war, at which point it was closed. I remember it was common for cars to crash in that curve just outside of the gate. It was always a fun Friday night event to help a drunk German guy try to roll his VW back over after he crashed it in the field seen on the left at 0:12 .
Nice! Now same houses, are new Office for the. Bamf..the small "stadium seat place" are always there...and in the kindergarten is my Büro At the moment 😄🤭
I lived in one of those 3 story apartment buildings back in 1958. The address was 2B Alamo Circle. I was just turning 13 and I have fond memories of the friends I had and the elementary school on the main base at Heidelberg.
@@ericburgos -- It's a small world. When I lived there I was just getting my male hormones and the neighborhood girls were getting theirs. Up until then I avoided girls like the bubonic plague, but suddenly.... Then my dad got orders to ship out. We ended up in Jacksonville, Florida and my Dad finished up his 20 year Army career at Camp Stuart in Georgia. I lived in Jacksonville until I graduated from high school in 1964. From there it was off to Parris Island and 4 years in the Marines. Fortunately they didn't send me to Vietnam. I'm retired now on 5 country acres near Louisville, Kentucky. My time in Germany was the best time I ever had anywhere. Cheers!
8:25 That was the playground behind our apartment. I used to play there everyday with my best friend Colin from '06-'09. Hope life is treating him well.
I’m re-writing this... I was there from 1977-1980...was maybe 4-7 years old...all I remember were white buildings...Halloween parades in the basement...countryside everywhere and it RAINED ALOT! Thanks UA-cam!
Unfortunately you can't get in. Refugees have been housed there for some time. I have a video from the open day that's 2 or 3 years old, but you can't see much.
@@agp-Garage Sadly I've heard that they started tearing some of the buildings down as far back as 2022...Can't find any real videos or photos of what the base looks like these days, though
@@ahorserunning PHV looks exactly the same as in my video. Unfortunately, the large playground has been gone for a long time and I think the Burger King was torn down a long time ago.

The main entrance at the old Commissary is open because the school's sports halls are in use.
But everything else cannot be entered.

So sad that all Americans have left Heidelberg and Mannheim...
Maybe I have a picture of the address Alamo Circle somewhere, try to find it
@@agp-Garage -- I entered the address in Google Earth and sure enough, the building is still there.

I was there from 86 to 90 and DAMN that address sounds familiar! We were definitely on Alamo Circle and 2B sounds like it was our address, too.
