  • Chatting With Nutts - Episode #23 ft Christopher Ruocchio
    #booktube #bookpodcast #scifi
Welcome to the 23rd episode of Chatting with Nutts! My guest this episode of Chatting With Nutts is one of my new favorite authors and, in my opinion, someone who will be mentioned among the greats in science fiction, Christopher Ruocchio. We will definitely be talking about Empire of Silence and The Sun Eater as a whole but we will keep it spoiler free. I will also be talking to Christopher Ruocchio about his journey into SFF, as well as how he got into writing! I hope you enjoy this conversation on Chatting with Nutts as we talk about the current topics in fantasy/Sci-Fi as well as what we are reading and have already read that blew our minds.

Realizing I should have explained: The room behind me is so empty because it's still under construction. My desk is the only thing in it.

Allen needs to read his work and link up with him. The conversation over books, history, philosophy, and even theology (and much, much more) would be such a good time.
Top 3 Chatting with Nutts for me.

Ruocchio is definitely as genuine and nice as they come. From his background though, he is either a minimalist or moving houses haha great conversation as always.

I should have explained! My office is under construction, but I'm not really supposed to move things into it until the city inspector has cleared it, so all that's up here is my desk.

But wow, the author Christopher mentioned learned Ojibwe! It's one of the hardest languages to learn. Trust me, I've studied it. Here's the word for blueberry pie - miinibaashkiminasiganibiitoosijiganibadagwiingweshiganibakwezhigan.

Just got around to finishing. Thanks so much for asking him about Berserk. That was awesome, and while I knew he loved the series, finding out that Miura was his favorite living writer was really shocking since manga isn't really treated with respect in literary circles. That made my day

Pope Leo I, also known as Leo the Great, is credited with convincing Attila the Hun not to sack Rome in 452 AD. According to historical accounts and artwork such as Raphael's fresco "The Meeting of Leo the Great and Attila," Leo I met with Attila and persuaded him to spare the city.

I will start watching the replay now. I subscribed to your channel because of the ASOIAF readalong. Chatting with Nutts is great, and I have almost seen the whole playlist. Your readalong is the reason why I read all the five ASOIAF books in January-February. I had only read the first three before 2022 :)

The man who discovered a strain of wheat that helped alleviate famines in the 1970s was Dr. Norman Borlaug. He developed a high-yielding variety of wheat known as "dwarf wheat" or "semidwarf wheat" that was resistant to diseases and produced larger grains. This strain of wheat, combined with improved agricultural practices, became known as the Green Revolution and played a significant role in increasing food production, particularly in developing countries. Dr. Norman Borlaug's contributions to agriculture earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his efforts to combat world hunger.

From the preview of the first 5 chapters of «Empire of Silence», I caught:
Jadd: The Jaddite Faith from several Guy Gavriel Kay novels (GGK’s mix of Christian Trappings and the Sun Cults from Antiquity: Unsurprising given Ruocchio here states himself as a fan of GGK, with signed books by him) & Jeddah, an Ancient Port City in Modern Day Saudi Arabia
Birth Vats for the Nobility: «Brave New World» by Aldous Huxley
Hadrian’s home planet of Delos: Greek Island, Holy Site for the worship of Apollo and Artemis and the Athenian-led Delian League which fought Sparta in the Peloponnesian War of the 5th Century BC + The Name of the Mega-Corporation running the parks in «Westworld»
Hadrian’s brother Crispin: The St. Crispin’s Day Speech from «Henry V»
The Alien Antagonists, the Cielcin: Ciel (French: Sky) + sin (Mr. Ruocchio is Catholic, alright! 😄)
Lothrian: Have some similar language structure as the Free City of Lorath from GRRM’s «ASOIAF» + Lotharingia/Lorraine in Modern Day France
Hadrian’s family name Marlowe and their Devil Symbol: Christopher Marlowe wrote «Doctor Faustus», about the eponymous scholar who make a pact with the devil Mephistopheles (+ a reversed color scheme of the Manchester United Devil Logo, given the Marlowes’ English Ancestry?)
The Mother of Hadrian’s Family Name, Kephalos: Cephalus, whom Socrates have a dialogue with in Plato’s «Republic». Cephalus give as a definition of justice «to give each what is owed to them», which Socrates refutes by saying that returning a borrowed knife to someone who has turned mad and might therefore hurt themselves, is not just…(cue philosophizing on justice and madness!😅)

Absolutely loved the discussion on herber, tolkien, cynicism, deconstruction of heroes and how Tolkien used those lush long descriptions of nature in an artistic way to show the beauty of nature and how important it is. Another banger Jimmy, Sun Eater is the next scifi series I will check out for sure!

I've actually never watched or read LotR, when I was younger it just never came up, and as an adult I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it, so I've just been prioritizing things that seem to be more in line with my taste. But Christopher's breakdown of what LotR means to him has probably been sparked my interest more than anything else, which is saying something because I've heard a LOT about the book

I worlbuild first, get a sense of things, then start writing, changing or adding to the worlbuilding as needed. Hlaf the time though, I only use like 30% of what I've done in the actual manuscript itself, the rest of it merely giving me a better sense of the story

but sometimes I just discovery write the whole thing,do no prep, and it turns out pretty good. So it all depends on the story you're telling,at least to my mind

Ruocchio: "I don't see why tearing Tolkien down is necessary, I don't see a need for tearing down authors"
    -> I agree.
Feeling a need for moving beyond Tolkien is another matter for me, though. In top tier fiction, there is simply no place for the large parts of the main plot being driven by "fighting evil". Whether it's Tolkien, or Wheel of Time, or fighting the Others in AWOIAF.
Evil to me is a child like, and somewhat narrow minded (and even low key fascist) concept.

I am of the belief the others will be revealed to have an entire culture and nuanced reasons behind their actions, but I do understand your point. I thought Tad Williams did a nice job in memory sorrow and thorn of it

@@thefantasynuttwork About the Others: That would be really cool, and that's what I am hoping for, too. Have to look up Tad Williams, thanks for the tip. I think Ken Liu did a great job of showing how vicious and cruel a warrior society can be, without having to resort to ominous, non psychological evil.
