Duke Special - This Could Be My Last Day

- Those that were there on the 30th Oct giglet will remember feeling intensely annoyed at the thoughtless chatter at the bar and the back of the foyer as Duke began the quiet intro to this achingly beautiful song. His rare and remarkable gift shows in the way he could totally shut out everything around him and recreate the emotion that drove the writing of the original piece. It felt intrusive watching this remarkable performance again and was in two minds whether to post it. With the greatest respect I did, to illustrate his gift to consistently put so much sincere passion into his work that it makes him very Special indeed. You can detect a distinct drop in the background chatter as the sheer power and quality of the performance stills those ignorant of the rare talent performing on stage.
Still watching this beautiful performance in November 2023
Incredibly moving. Such a sense of wonder.
I wish I could speak or sing from my heart. This is raw and beautiful. I love it.
I'm so glad I've found this video again. Its the most beautiful and emotive performance. A really special moment.
Laura Greene a fellow fan! Were you at the actual performance? I just love watching and listening to this.
I have watched this so many times now Mike and the comments from others say it all.
Had to add my tuppence worth though and tip my hat to you for the superb filming that captured such an emotional performance. Still get a lump in my throat at every viewing. Many thanks.
Beautiful beautiful beautiful
Absolutely beautiful.
He's just marvelous
@itsMrAG 1:26 just hits home so hard! One of my favourites by Duke Special. Thanks for the upload - great to see him performing it live. I only ever saw him when he supported The Divine Comedy a good four or five years ago and didn't have a clue who he was, but by the end of his short set, I was a big fan!
I admit that I was conflicted but also felt that Duke's passion for his work also makes him truly Special and worthy of all the support fans can give him
@LimeeMiniDress You really can't ask for more than a sincere honest passion for music - Duke has it in spades!
he raises his voice up and i'm so fucking speechless
coming back to this yet again after a few years. I'm glad it's still online. It's heartbreaking, and so so tender. such a beautiful musician.
I'm sure I've commented here before, many years back but maybe something happened to my google account and the comment got lost. It's been in my UA-cam favourites for years.
anyway, this is such a precious performance, I'm glad it was recorded for those not there. It leaves me feeling so stirred up with the emotion of the song and this remarkable performance. Thank you all
Francis Barton - Powerful performance and seeing 'yer man' at the Irish centre in London tonight as it happens! (26/11/2016)
@@itsMrAG still watching this, and still just as moved to my core by it, after all these years.
@@FrancisBarton This is one of the performances that I am eternally grateful I captured at the time - never grows old!
@watchmytime14 - Couldn't agree more - we see a lot of impressively powerful singers but none that achieve his emotional power, level of intensity and passion for his art so consistently. Duke's a truly phenomenal talent - when you see him live you appreciate that a video is but a pale reflection of his performance.
@itsMrAG True, I didn't know him and my first encounter was live, at the Frames gig in London last December....
So for me he was the support of the band I was there for... Well, he made an impression, I looked him up as soon as I got back home. We got two big talents at the price of one that night, and it felt great :)
@sunavi246 Duke does have a remarkable ability to genuinely re-create the emotions that he felt when writing his songs - how he does it without crumbling after some of his sad ballads is a mystery!
Like Mike Watts said, you'd never know what made him write it.. But to me it sounds like someone special to him died and it dawned on him that it could happen to him any day. Realising how quick life can be taken away.
Pete Wilson - aka Duke Special - great song
would love to know the story behind this powerful and moving song . If I never find out it will still be a powerful and moving song ...
I have seen Stephen many times he is a very talented writer and is going in a bit of a different direction now,
@sophiegazelle One of my favourite uploads ever
@fatfighters1 Several of his songs are deeply personal as many of the best ballads are - his answer to direct questions is that he prefers the listener to create their own interpretation based on their own experiences - artists don't like their work to be too obvious I guess
June4783 - Some confusion here - who is 'Stephen'?
