34067 Tangmere - A Dramatic Run Over The Cotswolds & Sapperton - 2015

- It's been over 12 months since I last saw Tangmere, when it put it one of it's finest ever performances over Hermerdon. The final weekend in September would see the light pacific front the Cotswold Venturer, where we see the Southern Loco revert to it's usual dramatic fashion, as it's seen leaking steam & sounding very off beat, in a few of the captures from the day. With a return trip up the heavily graded Sapperton Bank, everyone lineside was hoping for an incident free climb and fortunately Tangmere went well up the winding metals of the Golden Valley, though far from sounding in good health. Unsurprising to many, the engine was declared a failure at Reading & the tour was terminated !
The locations for the day start of at Culham, where the conditions were sunny & cold, which made for perfect filming conditions, though a few curve balls were thrown into the mix, with an unwanted appearance from a three carriage unit & an unfortunate memory card failure would almost end in disaster.
After the early morning start in rural Oxfordshire, we jumped ahead of the tour, to the borders of the Cotswolds, where we first see Tangmere departing Moreton In Marsh, sounding very poor & struggling to keep it's feet after leaving the station. At the time, the tour was running 20 minutes early & nearly caught us out, if it wasn't for the blast on the whistle ! A few miles further down the line, we catch 34067 approaching Chipping Campden Tunnel, as it prepares for it's descent down Campden Bank towards Evesham, where it's steam leak is not so apparent.
For the return trip & our main shot of the day, we headed to the Golden Valley, where we see the Bullied tackling the winding grade as it heads through the jungle like terrain ! Once again the leaking of the steam on the drivers side is back, which would of made visibility very difficult. As I stated above, the engine was declared a failure at Reading, which will once again make bad reading & cast another doubt over the engine's reliability & whether it should be allowed onto the national network !
I hope you enjoy the video.
Great shots Liam, as usual. Didn't realise she had been leaking steam for most the day as the first time I saw her was at Sapperton. Despite the leak she still made a wonderfully noisy and smokey ascent of the bank. Cheers, Dave.
+D1002 Western Explorer Thanks, Dave. The leaking was on & off all day. I think that's why it was taken off at Reading, due to the poor visibility the driver was having. Sounded a lot better up Sapperton than it did earlier on.
so good...and the anticipation of a Westcountry was ,as I remember from 1967....amazing ...thanks Bob .....
That engine should have ben declared a fail early on. That steam leak does nothing for the driver's ability to see signals & read the road.
Excellent shots all along, grand to see Tangmere in fine form, Well filmed Liam
Good coverage Liam, as someone else has said 2015 is a year to forget for Tangmere but hopefully she'll come back stronger as she's a great performer when on song
+acw71000 Thanks, Austin. It's a shame about Tangmere, though I think this year has been very bleak for mainline steam, with the West Coast suspension & lack of fit locomotives, with the continuous last minute gauging restrictions. I Will be looking forward to next year, as we should be having a wrath of big names returning to the scene, which will give everybody interested in mainline steam a big boost !
Superbly captured on a very eventful day Liam, she was certainly in a bad way, and yet again unfortunately had to be failed on a Tour which is such a shame.....Regards...Bob
+Robert Masterman It's very worrying Bob, that they can't seem to get her running consistently & new issues have seemed to arisen since the stall on Hemerdon. Would be a big loss, If she's pulled from the mainline, as there's nothing quite as unique as a Spamcan ! Would be nice to see City Of Wells returning to mainline one day.
Gracias por este hermoso,hermoso,hermoso vídeo.
Some great shots, love the first one where the smoke and steam can be seen long before the loco comes into view. Regarding the steam leaks, I can't see how the driver can possibly have a clear view of signals through it all!
2015 certainly isn't Tangmere's year! Great shots as usual - Will
+The RailwayLad Mainline steam this year has been a total disaster ! Let's just hope that next year will be different.
Love it! These Bulleids MAKE STEAM!
A really splendid video Liam, especially the intro and approach shot at Culham, very entertaining. Shame about the latest installment in Tangmere's problems tho'. cheers, Alan
+ragl1 Glad you enjoyed it, Alan. It all seemed to be going well, until I heard the sound coming from the loco at Moreton In Marsh. At Sapperton it went well up the bank, but there was clearly a problem, so it was no surprise it was failed at Reading. Regards, Liam
Great shots Liam of Tangmere with obvious steam leaks but not sure about you saying she should not be allowed on the mainline !
+TheStephengthompson Steve, I want too see the loco continue on the mainline, as it's the only one of it's class available for mainline running, but It's not completing railtours at the moment & seems to be struggling for reliability, which must be a real headache for Network Rail & WCR. It's a shame there's a cloud of doubt about it's performance level, as when it's on form, it runs as good as any class 7 loco or better ! Thanks for your feedback. Regards, Liam
Great video with some excellent locations. A shame about 34067 though. I travelled behind her to Weymouth at the beginning of the month and she was in fine health then.
+Christopher Searle The loco is very inconsistent ! Which is a shame, as I enjoy seeing her out, as do many others !
Great shot
Interesting to compare this video with your "recommended" one, clearly shows how Tangmere should have performed...
+struck2soon That's what Tangmere's capable of, if it's on the money ! I just worry that Network Rail are losing patience with the engine, as it's clearly not 100% fit for mainline running.
Love the whistle blows.
Dear oh dear Liam, what a testing time particularly for the driver and fireman. Tangmere seems to blow hot and cold as your videos testify. You certainly did well to capture the action but Tangmere did sound very poor. Thanks for sharing it> Best wishes. Ken
+Ken Browne Hi, Ken. A real enigma of an engine, is Tangmere.
Holy jeez that's alot of steam leaks O.O
She's done for ..
+Sokol “M1V-SRDES2” Rhav'en The steam leaks are nothing new for the loco. It's just the misfiring sound in the third clip, which doesn't sit well with me & many others !

I love democracy
It's the footplate crew that are at fault. If the Driver and Fireman had learned how delicate Tangmere is, they would know not to push her to the limit so. That's why the poor old girl has been declared a failure. This isn't her fault, I care about her. Yes, we all agree, she was designed for dramatic scenes. But her crew need to stop pushing her over her limit. She's not getting any younger. I'll bet she's crying out for the two to stop pushing her on so. Yes, she does have to work hard, but working too hard will result in constant failure. I feel for the poor girl, her wheels must be feeling like they might crack. Driver and Fireman, learn that Tangmere is not a plaything. She's a delicate machine that needs to be treated carefully. Remember that.
