  • Joanna visits with Morgan Hayes, Assistant Extension Professor with Biosystems and Ag Engineering to talk about cattle handling and the bud box design.
Bud box is low costs system to build and are ideal if the cattle handling facility is being put on rented land or in an old tobacco barn. The system can be built by using panels and utilizing the natural movement of cattle. The design was created in the west for cowboys on horseback working cattle. However it is now modified for cattlemen on foot to be able to process smaller lots of cattle. Most cow-calf operations will need a box that is at least 12 feet wide and 20 feet deep.

Which is the right side to attach the big gate? In this example it is attached in the opposite side of the alley, but in the image layout shown it is attached at the side of the alley.

Here is the response from Morgan: The gate can swing either way. Usually the person pushing the cattle walks on the side where the cattle escape into the single file alley, so often it is easier if gates swings closed right near the single file alley. However, in some cases depending on how posts are laid out and the lead up to the bud box it can be easier to switch the orientation. As long as you don’t push too many cattle in the bud box it shouldn’t be a huge concern; the lack of pressure on the cattle when closing the gate is one reason the bud box is 20-24 ft long. Also some bud boxes the working alley is on one side and a load out alley is on the other in which case either gate swing makes complete sense.
