- A Chameleon changes color out in the wild of Madagascar. This lizard walks along a branch and sticks out his tongue, changing from red to pink to green to yellow and blue. A master of camouflage when it wants to be unseen and a bright beacon of showmanship when its courting a partner or fighting off a rival.

I’ve never actually seen chameleons change colours so it was amazing to realize that the changes are pretty instantaneous.

When I moved out to the Hawaiian Islands for a a few years to do organic farming I was surprised to realize there we Jackson Chameleons that lived there.
Lets just say the I had brewed some mushroom tea the first time I found one of the little buggers and let her climb on my hands. I wasn't sure at first because it was so trippy, but their ability to change color was the most incredible experience that day. She was so calm and beautiful, what a miracle of nature really

they change colour by manipulating nanocrystals within their skin cells so that the light that gets reflected off them reflects as a different wave length (I.e. a different colour). Chameleons do not in fact change the pigment/colour of their skin (that would be more insane/unbelievable than how they actually do it, especially since blue is a pretty rare colour in nature)

Chameleons communicate by changing colours, not to camouflage. When mine was angry he would change to amazing bright colours, hiss and bite, then when relaxed he would have dark colours which were not so fun to see. Surprisingly chameleons bite pretty hard, found that out. To camouflage they do however take two steps forward and one step back to mimic a leaf blowing in the wind, it looks hilarious.
This animal is one of the wonders of the world. It's absolutely amazing. Hoping to see this in person.

The reason why chameleon change its color :
Chameleon skin has a superficial layer which contains pigments, and under the layer are cells with guanine crystals. Chameleons change colour by changing the space between the guanine crystals, which changes the wavelength of light reflected off the crystals which changes the colour of the skin.
