Kinitics Automation direct-drive linear actuators (based on shape-memory alloys) at IMTS

In this video shot at IMTS 2018 and the co-located Integrated Automation, Motion & Drives (IAMD) USA and HANNOVER MESSE USA, Kinitics Automation president Dean Pick P.Eng. chats with Design World editor Lisa Eitel about a new actuator that uses shape memory alloy (SMA) wire bundles made of specialty nickel-titanium alloy for reliable linear motion. In fact, these high-force short-throw SMA actuators redefine what’s possible from a compact electrically operated linear package. Pick explains where SMA linear actuators - including the KLA05 shown at IMTS 2018 - outperform pneumatic, piezo, and electric-motor-driven ballscrew actuators in certain applications.

In the video, Pick invites Eitel to play three tug-of-war games using a KLA05 linear actuator and KCA020 controller that have been set up as part of a haptic (force feedback) device. In the first game Eitel is challenged to command the linear actuator to 1mm of travel by pulling with a steady 12 pounds of force. The second game has Eitel pulling with 24 pounds of force to drive and hold the KLA05 at 2mm of travel. In the third and final game Eitel is asked to bring the actuator to its end of travel by pulling over 36 pounds of force. Bringing the KLA05 to its end of travel triggers the KCA020 controllers’ built-in over-travel protection circuit. The graph overlays from each game shows Eitel’s pulling force as blue dots and the actuators position response as a green line that changes to red when the game is over. The demonstration shows how easy it is to control the SMA linear actuator for an array of applications.
