Honestly I'd say a few good additions to the first aid kits would be crepe tenser bandages for sprained ankles/joints. Aspirin specifically for heart attacks helps in no small amount. Asprin increases the odds of surviving a heart attack by 25% alone. Triangular bandages or even bandanas work quite well. I always pack first aid kits for the needs of those around me.
I just carry a bandana and electrical tape for my first aid
Plus antiseptic/antibacterial cream, even a small cut or splinter can turn into a much bigger problem without treatment.
Liked seeing that Adirondack basket pack. Growing up in upstate NY I spent many summers in the Mts and that was a Very Popular pack, especially with the Seasoned Resident Campers.
I always carry a small IFAK, a mini Ziploc with some meds, and a trauma kit. The trauma kit has a compression bandage, a cravat, a SWAT-T tourniquet, a large multi-trauma dressing and a vented chest seal.
The trauma kit is not as large as it sounds. I am basically trained to use all of that gear, but I will defer to someone with more med training if they're present.
Thanks for the spring encouragement. Just an idea, as one who has cut myself with every knife I own, I throw in a pair of leather gloves. An extra barrier when I am sawing or whittling even though it takes some getting use to, especially if I can avoid bloodshed. Stay well!
That's great that you have those four seasons where you are. Here in Western Montana, we have four seasons as well, almost winter, winter, still winter and tourist season!

Good stuff! On a hike 3 weeks ago, I broke my wrist. My buddy wrapped my arm in the dish towel, found 2 large pieces of bark and tied it tight around the break with paracord. It worked perfectly. The ER folks were impressed. We hiked out, but if it had been an ankle or leg, the Garmin InReach Mini carry would have been invaluable. I usually cover cuts with leukotape and worry about getting it off at home later.

Glad to see the Tourniquet! You’re a Leader!! (An arterial cut can bleed you out in 2 1/2 minutes…but you’ll pass out well before that from shock.) Good job Brother!!
Glad to see I am not the only minimalist for first aid. I carry a blowout kit daily-but I also carry a firearm daily, and thats just good sense. When I am out hiking though, I take some bandaids, an ACE bandage, a cotton bandana, and moleskin. In over 4 decades, I have never needed more than that.
That fire lense is pretty cool! Never thought of writing down herbal remedies, good idea, I always forget that stuff and google doesn't work in the wild very well.

With you on the first aid kit - mine looks a lot like yours, with the addition of an EpiPen and anti-histamines. Honeybees and I are not good friends. A good compression bandage is also a must here in Australia; got these little legless lizards that kind of bite a bit. Cheers Dan.

Your medical kit is fine for what you do. Was super happy to see you have a tourniquet though if you didnt I was mailing one right away lol. It's literally the #1 best lifesaving object anyone could have #2 being wound packing material and #3 a communications device being a cell phone, radio, sat phone or location beacon.
Does it matter what brand tourniquet?
@@andreacremeans1055 I like the North American Rescue C.A.T ones. Also just got some from Recon Medical and they have metal windlasses and seem very nice for the price .
I'm a heating contractor. Sharp metal everywhere. Cotton and electrical tape (or duct tape) is a great "field expedient" bandage. My dumbass brother (who I am business partners with) is always cutting himself. His blood is all over Michigan. He uses these bandages daily. 🤣

For "non-artists" that want to improve their drawing abilities, I'd recommend "How To Draw Anything" by Mark Linley. The ability to sketch your surroundings, plants, etc can be more valuable than you think. Also, fun.
Make room for new gear! There's a Pack Basket available. I was hoping the lid/cover was going to be an oil cloth or waxed canvas material. Maybe Badgerclaw can put one together?
Couldn’t the lid be the padded kneeler/seat if it were waterproofed and padded? Save one object from your pack?

As for a first aid kit - I hate blisters, so I always carry some blister badaids.
Nice way you sorted out your stuff into the three same yet easily recognizable packages.

New to your channel, but I'm surely addicted! I always carry some additional medical supplies (being a paramedic for many, many years) such as antibiotic ointment, cravats, mole skin, etc. All of them light and there when you need them. Keep up the informative videos. Well done!
Do you have a bare minimum list of must haves?
@@andreacremeans1055 Can't say I do, but I usually have at least a few Band-Aids (different sizes), a few small pieces of mole skin, a packet or two of triple antibiotic ointment, a half-dozen 2 x 2 gauze pads, a dozen of 4 x 4 gauze pads, some bandaging cloth like Kerlex or Kling, a few small butterfly closures or Steristrips (be careful with these as closing a wound is not always easy or the best approach - it MUST be clean), a few alcohol wipes, some 1/2 in or 1 inch medical adhesive tape (e.g., Dermicel) maybe small tweezers, and some NSAIDs (Advil is my go to).
Lol same about first aid. I have a super small kit. And only just started taking it in my pack. Especially my daily work pack. Things happen on the job all the time and having stuff to help the kids is good. Me I usually use shop towels paper towels and electrical or duct tape 😂

Spring is coming, so are the mosquitoes. The one item i have found that works, over and over is the
Thermacell, its light,but it needs battery’s, and a fuel source. But it works. Since you are sleeping out doors with not protection from netting, this thing works.

Gonna have fun this year switching out hatchet for a large knife i was given at Christmas and focusing on a lot more flint and steel I also was given a kit for Christmas.

For the past decade I've been going into the BWCA with a group of guys, and we've always used one of those baskets. It works great for keeping things up right like fuel canisters and other things. We had been using one made out of natural materials like the one you have which was handed down to my friend from his father. It had 30+ years of BWCA trips on it and finally crapped out on us during one of our trips. We definitely did some improvising to keep it put together on our way out on that trip. The next year my buddy found a company that makes baskets like that but from more durable materials... I don't recall the actual name of it but it was a flexible polymer base of some sort like plastic but not. It was weaved just like the original one with similar nylon straps for carry and worked great. Well worth the investment.
sidenote: we probably could have gotten more life from the original basket if it were maintained better, as no one thought to do this, by applying linseed oil or mineral oil on it once in a while to keep it from drying out, but as you said, half the fun is switching out gear from time to time. Cheers!

When u said being a day pack, you know what you're going to want to do at camp" ( at 5:54) I could already hear make a cup of coffee in your voice lol. Then u did say it!! roflmao I had drank maybe 5 cups of coffee in my life I'm 44 a of 3/1 and thanks to you and your love of coffee, I decided to try it out a little bit. Drink a couple cups a day and have totally quit the death in a can energy drinks I was hooked on. So not only having way more fun in the woods thanks to u, I'm now a coffee guy. Lol love your channel, dig your style. Don't quit brother, u make a lot of us day when we get that notification. 👍✌️
I'm using a parang this year . Always trying to go lighter and lighter . Major back and shoulder injuries are slowing me down . But never give up.

Thanks Dan! Love the way much/most of this can be made from simple inputs. Lots of great tips here in comments already too. One thing I might add that I found really helpful in the past when batteries die on flashlights is a spent lighter. Not only can it get charred material lit, it works great as a human powered light source. If it is not spent you can wrap cord around it under gas actuator to prevent burns/overheating. Also works to keep it from discharging if you are carrying one. But honestly just the one handed sparky got me out of the woods walking along and on top of a cliff once, off trail. It was certainly adequate at the walking speed I was moving, and when my thumb would tire I just switched to the other hand.
I just love these videos, living in England it's so good to listen to your advice.

I’m going to have to add a utility hook to my pack. It’s a great idea! I did get a chuckle out of all your cookware. I had about a quarter of those items on my last 9 day backpacking trip to the Wind River Wilderness. Of course, I made up for it with a fly rod and spinning rod and plenty of flies and lures!
you’d love it here in Minnesota! this winter was snow storms every other week, nice weather for about a day or 2 and then BOOM 20 degrees or -1 degrees with snow fall hits you outta nowhere! not my cup of tea though, i’m more of a fall/spring guy haha!
I have a similar pack. It's actually one I made during a weekend workshop. I wove the straps and added an additional one that can tie around my waist as a belt to better distribute the weight. I need to get or make one of those covers though.
I was watching Alone today and guess who I saw? I've been watching your channel for a while and never knew you were on Alone. You never mention it, unlike other UA-camrs like that guy on the same season of Alone with you who poaches game. I rarely watch TV, so I only saw a few episodes today with you in it. Anyway, thought that was cool!
I agree on the 1st aid. For first aid I like a few boo boo items (very minimal) and a tourniquet & Israeli bandage. If I were to add anything else it would be a chest wound bandage, but that can be done with duct tape, gauze and improvised stuff.
I just want to get my hands on that cute little basket of yours.. LOL oh well
You forgot the traps! For no more than you have in there I believe I would have went ahead and put my blanket in and maybe a ground cover and like you said I'm not going to go over my first aid kit I've got my kits setup for different times of year and different types of activities. But all in all that's a pretty cool setup. On the other hand I am not ready for warm weather I don't like warm weather I can move around and keep warm but when it's hot I can't take off enough to stay cool anyway you guys have a great day and stay safe and keep your powder dry!

Hey I have that shovel! I bought it to take out on hikes, camping, and mushroom hunting
It's a great shovel that can do some small brush clearing and chopping, light weight, and actually is probably the best portable shovel I've used when it comes to digging! I was originally gonna get like a cold steel one but I've read they actually suck for digging in hard soils. Most E-tools I've used don't penetrate hard/rooted/rocky ground well unless you fold it and put it in hoe mode... no point in carrying a shovel that doesn't dig well. This one's a breeze to dig with though it might be slower in soft/loose soil cause of the smaller spade head it'll do any job you put it to no sweat. Plus as a mini machete thing the steel is fantastic and holds its edge really well, which is a plus when you're pushing through the brush trying to find those hidden mushrooms!

On your first aid kit, only one thing you should carry to clean the wound before Evan a temp bandage. Comes from Britain it call Dettol. Doubles as a soap.

Uhhhh Metrological Spring was March 1st. Astrological Spring is March 22. I'm already updating my kits for Spring. You can already see and feel warming. That doesn't mean the cold and snow is over, however, it won't last long when it does come.
