I was there 47 years ago and remember it like it happened yesterday. I was sitting on the railway stand near the corner where Chris Pope scored and can still feel the excitement. What a great day for Western Province rugby that was.
I was 10 years old and living in Durban. Television had just arrived. I was playing soccer with a friend in the garden..and my Dad called us in to watch..just in time to see the winning try and conversion. Wonderful memories 👏
No it wasn't. There were really decent commentators those days. This guy sounds like some random person they got from the stands because something happened to the regular one. Truly horrendous on the ear.
And after the tour he complained he did not get a fair go in regards to test selection, was also hopeless against the 1971 Lions The other Full Back was also hopeless
Rainman: you are a slave to emotion and emotional reactions. This is television commentary, not radio commentary. The commentator is factual, not emotional. The viewers can get emotional, but the commentator need not be emotional too. Nothing wrong with the commentary.
My comment has absolutely nothing to do with emotions, more with his actual commentary, which is amateurish, ill-prepared, riddled with mistakes, doesn't flow, plus he doesn't have a strong enough voice. It's like all the other preferred commentators for the day was absent for some reason and they decided to pluck some random guy from the stands to fill in.
@@sakabula2357 So far that this right is enshrined in the Constitution. As opposed to the hatred they had for a brutal apartheid system that saw them wanting to see all white teams lose to visiting opposition. THAT far.

12 -11, Same score as the Springboks vs AB's RWC 2023.
Great commentary. That's how it was in those days.

Gerhard Viviers spoke so fast that he overtook the action on the field !
Never heard the commentator before or since. Agreed, it was terrible. That said it was a special WP Side.
Laurie Mains was a dreadful goal kicker. Two easy conversions missed . Should never have been selected .

@@Rotowhaka All those kicks Mains fluffed , I was banging over with barefeet aged 9.

In all honesty, this commentator who i may have heard more than once back in the day, makes Chick Henderson sound like Bill Mclaren.Positively awful
“Not emotional” ?? 😂😂
when WP scored those two tries + converted … had your hearing aid fallen out?
Western province, hadan awesome team, and played good rugby in that era
This commentator is a damn sight better than Sean Maloney..
A section of the crowd was supporting the All Blacks passionately. South Africa has come far.
SA has gone down the toilet in every conceivable metric.
